The tourist industry has grown enormously over the last fifty years, and there are few places which are
unaffected by it. However tourism rarely benefits the countries which tourists visit.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction The statement argues that tourism fails to help the countries that are attractive to
holidaymakers (PQ). This essay disagrees with that suggestion completely because of
the advantages that tourism generally brings (OpS). The essay will first look at the
positive economic impact of tourists and then discuss the benefits of sharing cultures that
have been brought about as a result of increased holiday travel (OuS).

Main Body 1 Tourism brings a wide range of economic benefits (TS). Holidaymakers spend money in
the countries they visit and support the creation of new jobs (ETS). For example, coastal
areas of Spain and Portugal have been financially supported in recent years by the large
numbers of British, German and French visitors (Ex). Therefore, the tourist industry
contributes to a higher standard of living for people in the countries that travellers visit
(C).
Main Body 2
Another advantage that tourism brings to countries is the opportunity to share cultures
with people from a different part of the world (TS). When holidaymakers visit new places
they learn about the country’s culture and, in turn, share their lives with the local people
they meet (ETS). For instance, when I travelled to Tanzania in Africa I learned all about
the local music, while the people I met discovered that many people in Britain knew about
Mount Kilimanjaro (Ex). Thus, by sharing knowledge and ideas, the tourist industry brings
people closer together and helps to develop understanding in the world (C).
Conclusion
In conclusion, this essay examined whether the tourist industry helps the countries visited
by holidaymakers (PQ). I have argued that the travel industry supports countries in two
important ways (ROp). The wealth created by visitors means more employment
opportunities for the countries they visit, and the chance to meet people of different
backgrounds contributes to a more accepting world for everybody (S).
