Proposed Study:
Assessing the Academic Behavior and Attitudes of Grade 11 – STEM Students of
Far Eastern University High School

Rationale of the Study:

Rationale of the Study:

Physical activity is an important step you can take to improve your health and quality of life.
Regular physical activity may help prevent or delay many health problems. Being active may help
you look and feel better, both now and in the future.
The high school students have their physical activity in their curriculum which is called their
Physical Education. There is more and more evidence that physical activity enhances cognitive
functioning (Castelli et al., 2007), Physical fitness and academic achievement in grade school
students.

At the given Physical Education and Health curriculum for the grade 11 students from the
Department of Education, it offers experiential learning for learners to adopt an active life for
fitness and lifelong health. The knowledge, skills and understanding which include physical and
health literacy competencies support them in accessing, synthesizing and evaluating information;
making informed decisions; enhancing and advocating their own as well as others’ fitness and
health.
The objective of this study is to determine what are the contributions of physical activity to the
grade 11 – STEM 2 students to their academic behaviors and attitudes. The aimed participants of
the researchers are the 11- STEM 2 students because their first subject is Physical Education.
Setting of the Study:

This study will take place at Far Eastern University Manila High School Academic Year 2019 - 2020.
FEU is in the University Belt area, West Sampaloc, City of Manila, is a nonsectarian private research
university in the Philippines. FEU became a university in 1934 under the guidance of first president
Dr. Nicanor B. Reyes, Sr. It has been noted as the leading proprietary university in the Philippines.
The Tamaraw’s intelligence and aggressiveness symbolizes FEU’s hunger for academic excellence.
The Far Eastern University is one of the first universities in the country to be established by a
Filipino. Thus, FEU wanted to showcase its nationalism through its sarimanok-inspired coat of
arms. The Sarimanok is a legsendary bird of the Maranao people from Mindanao. Green and Gold
are the official university colors of FEU. Green represents the founder’s aspirations for “fair hope
for the motherland.” Meanwhile, Gold represents the university’s golden opportunity to serve the
youth.

K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the Department of Education that aims to enhance
learners’ basic skills, produce more competent citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning
and employment. “K” stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic
education (6 years of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior
high school). This was implemented in the Philippines on the year 2013.

Far Eastern University addded the 2 additional high school years. Has their first batch of grade 11
students on the aademic year 2014-2015. Far Eastern University High School provides quality
education that prepares its graduates for the world of work, for college, and for life.

Variables that need to be defined, clarified or described:

Physical Education is "education through the physical". It aims to develop students' physical
competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to perform in a
wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle.

Attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular object, person, thing,
or event. Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing, and they can have a powerful
influence over behavior. While attitudes are enduring, they can also change.

Cognitive functions refer on the how one thinks and analyze the situation. Cognitive functions are
defined as cerebral activities that lead to knowledge, including all means and mechanisms of
acquiring information.

Related Literature (per variable) used to define the variables of the study (at least 3 references per
variable)

A study conducted by Donelly and Lambourne, 2011 stated that increasing physical activity and
physical fitness may improve academic performance and that time in the school day dedicated to
recess, physical education class, and physical activity in the classroom may also do a facilitate
academic performance
According to the article pubished by Moray House of Education and Sport, 2019, physical
education potrays a part in the lives of most students. PE is associated with health and wellbeing,
as a primary site for student engagement in the development of knowledge and understanding of
issues related to health.

Academic performance stems from a complex interaction between intellect and contextual
variables, health is a vital moderating factor in a child's ability to learn. The idea that healthy
children learn better is empirically supported and well accepted (Basch, 2010)

According to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), physical activity has an
impact on cognitive skills such as concentration and attention, and it also enhances classroom
attitudes and behaviours, all of which are important components of improved academic
performance

According to Tomporowski, 2003 single session of and long-tern participation in physical activity
improve cognitive performance and brain health. Children or students who participate in vigorous
or moderate to intensity level of physical activity benefit the most.

Another study also found positive associations between physical activity, fitness, cognitive
function and academic achievement. The evidence indicated that physical activity has a
relationship to parts of the brain that support complex cognitive processes during laboratory task

A research conducted by Grabbard and Barton 1979 stated that the executive function and brain
health underlie academic performance. Basic cognitive function related to attention attention and
memory facilitate learning, and these functions are enhanced by physical activity.

What is the level of seriousness of the research problem? If possible, show some statistical
evidence.

The physical activity affects how the students think during their class. How they understand and
analyze the given problem. Research shows that with the needed physical activity, this can improve
the students cognitive functions.

It is recognized that physical activity triggers change in the human brain due to increases in
metabolism, oxygenation and blood flow providing hormones that promote neurological health.
Those changes are particularly important for the developing paediatric brain

State the general objective of the study.

The researchers strive to participate in study that enhances the knowledge of what efficient
teaching and learning is in order to improve, challenge and even transform present policy, practice
and professional development in the behavioral attributes of physical education in students. Most
importantly, the researchers also aim to challenge this position for PE, question the extent to which
PE and PE teachers should be responsible for developing students’ physical health, and the extent
to which current practice in PE can improve children and young people’s social, emotional and
mental health.

Possible contributions or possible beneficiaries of the study:

This research aims to presents the beneficial attributes of physical education to the academic
behavior and attitudes of the grade 11 STEM - 2 . The focus of this research will be placed on how
the educational institution through Physical Education helps enhance the behaviors of the students
towards academics.

To the students, this study will help them understand the benefits and effects to their cognitive
function by having a Physical Education in their class

To the parents, this study will help them be more aware of how important it is for their child to
attend Physical Education classes.

To the teachers, this study will be their basis on how to start their class off with the students as
they help function the thinking or the cognitive function of the students. They will be able to make
their student engaged to the lesson as they discuss.

To the Physical Education teachers, this study will be an eye opener on how they should give out
the exercises or physical activity to the students.

For the schools, this study will serve as an eye opener for the teaching personnel to give more
attention to the student’s physical activities during their Physical Education classes.

To the future researchers this study can serve as a background study to those who want to conduct
a similar research regarding this topic.

In doing this research, the researchers will contribute to education, teaching and learning
improvements. It can challenge and stimulate physical education. It can also improve life-changing
improvement in health, learning accomplishment, and academic behavior.
