Nunez The Teaching Profession

BSEd English II Prof. Juse Lyn Hiponia

Mother of All Profession

My mother ones shared a happening that once lit up the fire in my heart in teaching. I was
in junior high school when she shared this beautiful moment of realization. It was a reunion with
her high school classmates. It was a beautiful sight for most of her classmates are all
professionals and earning tons of money. She has former high school classmates that are
engineers now, architects, doctors, successful businessmen, policemen and women and other
professions that are looked up by everyone, then she told me something that sparked the fire in
my heart in teaching. She said that among all of the professions that are inside that hall, her
profession stands tall the most, a teacher, then I asked why and she said that without a teacher,
there won't be any other profession, for teachers are the ones who teach and molds an individual
to be successful in life. These lines fro my mom lit up a tiny fire in my heart and gave me the
desire to be a person who'll help mold someone to be successful.

I'm in my sophomore year under the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English
Program and came to encounter a subject that kept the burning fire of desire for me to teach. The
course The Teaching Profession taught me the value of a teacher, of teaching and a teacher in
general.

The first chapter of the course let me discover the historical development of the teaching
profession from the pre-hispanic period wherein there were no formal training and education for
teachers to the present professionalization of teaching under the Presidential Decree 1006 by
former President Ferdinand Marcos and the Republic Act 7836 or the Philippine Teacher
Professionalization Act of 1994. As an aspiring future educator, there are steps I need to take to
acquire my teaching profession legally. First is I have to finish my long years of initial
professional education. The second is to attain my college degree recognized by CHED. Next is
to pass my Licensure Examination for Teachers. The fourth is to undergo continuing professional
development for maintaining and improving my knowledge and skills. Lastly, is to take part in
any organizations in line with my profession and major to widen my knowledge, skills, and
experiences and to also lend help to the development of the community and the country.

However, there are more demands from a teacher as a professional and as a person. A
teacher must have the characteristics to become an effective teacher. A teacher is must be
prepared at all time, she or he must possess an optimistic attitude about teaching and the
students, a teacher must also believe in his or her students' ability, she or he must be creative and
display a personal touch to her teachings, a teacher should also be fair to his or her students, she
or he must also cultivate a sense of belongingness inside the classroom, a teacher also must be
compassionate to her students for teachers are the second parents of the students, he or she must
also have a sense of humor, making learning fun for fun learning helps students learn effectively,
a teacher must also possess a humble heart, ready to forgive and admit mistakes, lastly, a teacher
must have respect to students for teachers who give the highest respect earns the highest respect.
All of these demands can't be fulfilled with the perception that teaching is only a job. We must
understand that the teaching profession is a vocation and a mission, teaching is a calling and a
task that is ought to be passionately fulfilled.

Furthermore, the course also opened my eyes to the Code of Ethics of Teachers in which
I was able to assess myself if, somehow, I am fit to be a role model of the society. The following
are the things that to be considered of a teacher namely, the State, the Community, the Parents,
the Learners, the Teaching Comunity, the Higher Authorities, the Teacher and the Profession, the
Teacher as a Profession, and the Teacher and the Business. These rules are set and ought to be
followed by the teachers to set standards and to realize the actions of a teacher. These are a lot of
rules to be followed, but, as an aspiring teacher that will be looked up by the society and most
especially by my future students, I am more than ready to follow these rules for the betterment of
my-self as a person and as a teacher altogether.

Additionally, I also understand from this course the rights a teacher holds under the
Republic Act 4670 or the Magna Carta for Teachers. While teachers are being demanded by the
society with a lot of things, they are also not deprived of the rights and incentives teachers may
gain. The said rights are as follows; Consent for transfer, safeguards in disciplinary procedure,
no discrimination, married couples to be employed in the same locality, academic freedom, not
more than 6 hours of actual classroom teaching, additional compensation for activities outside
normal duties, salaries comparable to other occupations to insure teachers a reasonable standard
of life for themselves and their families, salaries appropriated by local governments not to be less
than those paid to teachers of the national government , cost of living allowance, special hardship
allowance for the teachers assigned to far-flung areas, medical examination free of charge once a
year during the teacher's professional life, prohibition of unauthorized deduction from teachers'
salaries, study leave, indefinite leave, salary increase upon retirement ,and freedom to establish
or join organization of their choice.

In this course, I also realized the role of the teacher as an effective educator that thinks
globally but acts locally. Glocal teachers are the instrument for successful and effective globally
competent individuals. They are the ones who are equipped with enough knowledge and values
to be able to hone learners that are needed to grow as individuals who are ready to compete
globally. These teachers have the knowledge, the skills and the values that must be shared with
the learners for them to be globally competent but at the same time safekeeping their sense of
nationalism and patriotism. This also a skill I need to work on for me to possess.

The course also discussed the Philosophy of Education. It is a set of Philosophies that
guide teachers in their duties as educators and molders of students. Teachers are not mere people
who teach and make connections with their students. We need to be more than that, give them
the best of education through exposing their talents with activities that will help them showcase
their strengths and make them look at their weaknesses in a positive way that they still have
room to improve.

Teachers are the most compassionate human in the world I can say. We extend our
patience for our students, we give them opportunities to excel, we understand their differences
and accept their flaws. We are instruments that are assigned to help young learners to see
themselves as persons who'll someday achieve the goal they've been dreaming of reaching. But
to be able to achieve this kind of level, long years of preparations are needed, academically,
emotionally, physically and mentally. Teaching, for others, might be seen as an easy profession,
however, it's not. You need to deal with different personalities, cultures, and beliefs inside a
classroom and make that classroom a place of belongingness while helping all of your students
to grow not only as a student but more importantly as a person.
I am a student yearning to be an effective teacher one day, striving to complete the
demands needed from me. The things I've come to realize from this course burned the fire even
more and yearn for more realizations for the next steps that I'll take. As I continue my studies, I'll
be even more eager to learn for me to finish my degree, attain my license, be an effective teacher
during my practice, and develop my skill to be a globally competitive teacher.
