“Go Active Nature’s Development in its Authenticity (G.A.N.D.A)”

Last Friday, The Christian Living Education Department has organized a Green
Theology Conference for us—freshmen students who enrolled in Theology 102. It was
hosted by a city councilor of Mabalacat City who currently involved in waste management
education and an alumnus of the university, Hon. Engr. Roland Pena. Our section was
scheduled in the morning. The first topics he distinguishes were Garbage, Trash, and Waste.
He asked us how much waste do we generate every day, and I was shocked when I found
out that, around 35,580 tons of garbage is generated every day in the Philippines. On
average, each person in the country produces about 0.5 kg and 0.3 kg of garbage every day
in the urban and rural areas, respectively. It made me think of the importance’s the proper
managing of our waste. In our daily lives, we perform many tasks that generate so many
waste products. It can be anything like a disposable diaper, napkin, chocolate wrapper,
shampoo sachets, chips wrapper, or opening a frozen package of pees or replacing some
dead batteries of your wall clock. To save the environment we need to understand that the
more waste we create daily, the more waste we must somehow get rid of and the more
garbage, the more population.

The Philippines government implemented the Republic act no. 9003(Ecological

Solid Waste Management act of 2000), an act providing for an ecological solid waste
management program, which shall ensure the protection of public health and the
environment. Here at Holy Angel University, the school garbage is separated into three
types of segregation. (Nabubulok, Hindi-Nabubulok, and Recyclable). Each garbage bin has
own corresponding color and variety of garbage to easily identify and segregate the waste.
Maintaining cleanliness in our University is everybody's responsibility. As responsible
young adults, students are expected to keep the school premises clean and orderly through
proper disposal of trash and proper use of facilities. We should also save our electricity,
turn off the lights, electric fans, and faucets when not needed, especially at dismissal time.
In Conclusion, we can help our planet to reduced unnecessary garbage by being smart and
practical. Instead of using a disposable diaper, we could use a recyclable diaper and napkin.
I’m not saying that we mustn’t use plastic rather, let’s avoid using plastic as much as we
can. And we should apply this every day: the proper segregation and storage for our solid
waste. Put our trash in proper containers, separate the compostable, non-recyclable, and
recyclable waste. In the end, the future of the environment is in our hands.
