Last Friday, The Christian Living Education Department has organized a Green
Theology Conference for us—freshmen students who enrolled in Theology 102. It was
hosted by a city councilor of Mabalacat City who currently involved in waste management
education and an alumnus of the university, Hon. Engr. Roland Pena. Our section was
scheduled in the morning. The first topics he distinguishes were Garbage, Trash, and Waste.
He asked us how much waste do we generate every day, and I was shocked when I found
out that, around 35,580 tons of garbage is generated every day in the Philippines. On
average, each person in the country produces about 0.5 kg and 0.3 kg of garbage every day
in the urban and rural areas, respectively. It made me think of the importance’s the proper
managing of our waste. In our daily lives, we perform many tasks that generate so many
waste products. It can be anything like a disposable diaper, napkin, chocolate wrapper,
shampoo sachets, chips wrapper, or opening a frozen package of pees or replacing some
dead batteries of your wall clock. To save the environment we need to understand that the
more waste we create daily, the more waste we must somehow get rid of and the more
garbage, the more population.
