CHALLENGE
Responsible disposal of plant debris
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), Americans generate approximately 180 million tons of
garbage each year. Of this, green waste represents about 18%,
or 32 million tons nationwide. Green waste is comprised of the
grass clippings, weeds, leaves, small branches and similar debris
generated primarily by landscape work. Disposing of green waste
at a conventional landfill takes up valuable space and resources.
Further, it has to be actively managed for decades to prevent any
negative impact on the environment.

DLC Resources, Inc. removes approximately 24 million pounds

of refuse from our properties each year, and 90% is green waste.
The challenge is to integrate sustainability into our work while
maintaining operational efficiency.

SOLUTION
Green waste recycling
Recycling green waste allows the plant material to be repurposed

When the trucks return to our central shop facility at the end of each
workday, our full-time Green Waste Crew feeds the material into
a 260-horsepower horizontal grinder which reduces the branches,
clippings and other material to small chips. The chips are delivered
to a green waste recycling company who processes and repurposes
the material as compost, mulch or paper.

Since our trucks only travel to the job site and return to the shop
facility, fuel costs and carbon emissions are also reduced.
DLC is dedicated to progressive, sustainable practices. We invested
in equipment, processes and training to convert conventional waste
into a new product. In 2009 alone, we will collect and recycle
22 million pounds of green waste from our properties. DLC is
committed to operating responsibly; we know that preventing green
waste from taking up space in a landfill is a critical step in being
efficient and sustainable.
