Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100
Note : 1. Answer any 5 full questions

1 a) Explain i) Stress invariants ii) Octahedral stress. 8

b) A rectangular bar of metal cross section 30mm x 25mm is subjected to an axial tensile force
of 180kN. Calculate the normal, shear and resultant stress on a plane whose normal has the
following direction cosines:
i) l = m = 1/ 2 and n = 0 ii) l = m = n = 1/ 3 12

2 a) Describe the procedure to find out components of strain using rectangular rosettes. 8
b) The displacement field is given by u = K(x2
+ 2z), v = K(4x + + z), w = 2y2 4kz2
Where K is a small constant. What are the strains at (2, 2, 3) direction. 12

3 a) A square plate 10mm thick is subjected to a tensile stress x = 150MPa in one direction and a
compressive stress of y = -150MPa in another direction. Find the change in volume of the
plate;  = 03, E = 2x105 N/mm2. 10
b) The state of strain at a point is given by x = 0.001, y = -0.003, z = xy = 0. xz = -0.004,
yz = 0.001. Determine the stress tensor at this point for E = 210x106 kN/m2, poisson’s
ratio = 0.28. Also find Lame’s constant. 10

4 a) Derive the governing differential equation for plane stress problems. 10

b) Given the stress function     z tan 1   . Determine whether stress function  is
  z
admissible. If so determine the stresses. 10

5 a) An Indian Standard I section ISMB400 is shown in Figure 5(a). It has the following
properties.

Depth of I section = 400mm

Width of I section = 140mm
Ixx = 204.584x106mm4
Iyy = 6.221x106mm4 Figure 5(a)

Determine the percentage increase in stress at right hand top corner of the section if the plane
of loading is 5° to the vertical compared to exactly vertical loading. 12
b) Determine the shear centre of the symmetrical channel section shown in Figure 5(b).

6 a) The central horizontal c/s of a crane hook is symmetrical trapezium, 80mm thick, the inner
width being 50mm and the outer width being 30mm. Calculate the intensity of stresses
developed at the extreme fibres when the crane hook supports a load of 15kN (Tensile). The
line of action of the load is 50mm from the inner edges of the section and it coincides with the
centre of the curvature. 12
b) A rigid horizontal bent ABC having uniform c/s is fixed at C and free at A in plan as shown.
It carries a vertical load W at the free end. Determine the vertical deflection at the free end.
