Lesson Title: Figures of Speech Section: PALAWAN

Standard:

A. Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of: East Asian literature as an art form inspired and influenced by
nature; relationship of visual, sensory, and verbal signals in both literary and expository texts; strategies in
listening to long descriptive and narrative texts; value of literal and figurative language; and appropriate
grammatical signals or expressions suitable to patterns of idea development.

B. Performance Standard:
The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering a brief and creative entertainment speech featuring
a variety of effective paragraphs, appropriate grammatical signals or expressions in topic development, and
appropriate prosodic features, stance, and behavior.

C. Learning Competencies:
EN8V-IIh10.1.4: Identify figures of speech that show emphasis;
EN8V-IIi-24: Discriminate between literal and figurative language.

Materials:
 television, laptop, cue cards

Overview:
 The students will identify the different types of figures of speech.

As a result of the lesson, the students will:


1. Define figures of speech;
2. Identify the different types of figures of speech;
3. Categorize the figures of speech given through mystery card, a memory game.
4. Identify the figures of speech on given sentences through an interactive game.
5. Construct a sentence using the given figures of speech;
6. Appreciate the importance of applying the figures of speech in writing or speaking;
7. Develop camaraderie during small group activities;
8. Appreciate the topic through interactive games presented.

TASK #1: REVIEW


1. In which town is the story of Ch’unhyang set? Namwon
2. Which character in the story is the son of the magistrate? Lee Mong-ryong
3. Where does Lee Mong-Ryeong first catch sight of Ch’unhyang? Gwanghanlu
4. In which period or dynasty is the story of Ch’unhyang set? Joseon
5. What does Lee Mong-Ryong give to Ch’unhyang before going to Seoul? mirror
TASK 2: WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Directions: Each representative would guess a consonant
letter. 1 correct letter = 100 points. If the representative tried to
guess the whole word incorrectly, the player would go bankrupt.
Representative can only redeem vowel letters equivalent to 50
points.

DISCUSSION:
The teacher will discuss the different types of figures speech that are commonly used:
 Alliteration
 Hyperbole
 Metaphor
 Simile
 Onomatopoeia
 Oxymoron
 Personification

TASK 3: MYSTERY SQUARES


Directions: The teacher will group them to 5-6 members each. The teacher will show mystery squares.
For 10 seconds, all boxes will be revealed and the students must be able to categorize the given examples
according to its figures of speech. The students will only write the corresponding number accordingly. The
group with higher points wins.

TASK 4: WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?


Directions: Each student will answer the questions individually.
Students with incorrect answer will automatically be removed from the
game. The students who reach the final round win.

TASK 5: WRITING ACTIVITY


Directions: Write a sentence applying the figures of speech. Students who
will be picked by the random name picker will share his/her answer.
