Lesson Ideas

Subject: Math
Specific Topic: Basic Algebra

Activity 1:
Learning how to solve 3x+7= 10 for x.
Adaptions for LD: Since algebra is more about knowing the process of doing things than it
is about knowing math facts for learning disabilities an idea would be to allow
multiplication tables or allow the use of a calculator for the adding, subtracting,
multiplying, or dividing part of the problems.
Adaptions for ID: Once again since algebra is more about knowing the process, I would put
more than one problem on the board and allow students a certain amount of time to try to
solve them, so all the students are still working and people are not standing out for still
working on the problem for longer than everyone else. If they solve at least one problem I
can see that the understand the process.
Adaptions for ED: For this I would clearly describe the process of what I am expecting prior
to turning the children away to do their own thing.
Autism: have students work in partners or small groups so they can check each other’s
work and ask questions together instead of feeling overwhelmed by the big group of
students.
Severe and multiple disability: using computer programs to allow them to better
understand what is happening throughout the process.
Visual impairment: provide the student with practice problems that are done in braille and
use more oral intensive teaching.
Hearing impairment: Make sure that when I am speaking and working the problem, I
explain what I am going to do, then show it on the board, and the explain what I did.

Activity 2:
Factoring Equations
Adaptions for LD: teach many different methods in order for student to pick the method
that they believe is the easiest to do and understand
Adaptions for ID: do many practice examples with the whole class before they are required
to do it by themselves. Explain the problem while doing it and then explain what we did
after the problem is finished
Adaptions for ED: clearly state what is expected from the students in the classroom before
beginning a new activity and telling them the schedule for the day so they know what to
expect throughout the entire class period

Activity 3:
Graphing Lines and Equations
Adaptions for LD: Permitting the use of computer software to graph the lines instead of
making the students draw it free hand.
Adaptions for ID: Have big pictures of examples at the front of the room that are easy to
understand and follow.
Adaptions for ED: Use a number of different games or activities to try and keep interest and
involvement high in the activities such as having them label different graphs or things like
that.
