NAME: POOJA N V
A large portion of waste management practices deal with municipal solid waste which is the bulk of the waste
that is created in the household, industrial and commercial activity. The key to efficient waste management is to
ensure proper segregation of waste at source and to ensure that the waste goes through different streams of
recycling and resource recovery then reduce the final residue is then deposited scientifically in sanitary landfills.
Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems, some of the waste will rot,
but not all, and in the process it m ay smell, or generate methane gas, which is explosive and contributes to the
greenhouse effect. But people and government neglecting the process are facing a huge problem with the waste.
As these goes on the earth as whole will face a problem which will be filled with nothing but waste. There
should be certain precautions which need be taken to prevent this.
The three R’s are reduce reuse and recycle. Recycling is one such process which helps in waste management.
Recycling deals with collection and conversion of waste materials into new materials which can be used and
also helps in saving the materials and lower greenhouse gas emission. One of the other reason for recycling is
that it reduces trash in landfills and incinerators. Recyclable materials includes many kinds of glass, paper,
plastic, cardboard, metal, tires, textiles, batteries, and electronics. The composting of other bio degradable waste
such as food or garden waste is also a form of recycling.
CHAPTER -2
LITERATURE REVIEW
Ministry of Environment and Forests issued a new gazette of rules (4th Feb 2011) known as Plastic Waste
(Management and Handling ) Rules,2011 states No person shall use carry bags made of recycled plastics or
compostable plastics for sorting ,carrying ,dispensing or packaging food stuffs. No person shall manufactures
,stock, distribute or sell any carry bag made of virgin or recycled or compostable plastic ,which is less than 40
microns in thickness .Sachets using plastic material shall not be used for storing ,packing or selling gutkha,
tobacco and pan masala
Assessment of municipal solid waste management by Pattnaik & Reddy (2010), study shows that activities like
collecting those materials from the waste, which could be gainfully retrieved and utilized for making new
products. Since unsegmented waste is dumped at community bins, its optimal recycling is not possible.
However, rag pickers usually sort out and sell recyclable materials like plastic, glass etc.
Assessment of the status of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in metro cities, state capitals, class 1
cities and class 2 towns in India by Kumar, Bhattacharya, J.K, Vaidya (2009), In India almost every city, town,
or village adopted unscientific disposal of municipal solid waste. Among the 59 chosen cities, 40 has shown
increase in waste generation, 7 cities shows reduction and remaining are more are less the same. Though there
was increase in population in cities there was no clear reason in reduction in the waste generation, the possible
reason for reduction could be that the waste generated could not reach the designated dumping site and was lost
in the cities peripherals, outskirts, along the road, low lying area, along the drain, green areas, etc.
In India, rapid urbanization and uncontrolled growth rate of population are main reasons for MSW to become an
acute problem. According to population size per capita waste generation rate and its growth during a decade are
indicated by Annepu, R. K. (2012) substantial solid waste in India, waste to energy research and technology
council. It is anticipated that population of India would be about 1,823 million by 2051 and about 300 million
tons per annum of MSW will be generated that will require around 1,450 km2 of land to dispose it in a
systematic manner, if ULBs in India continue to rely on landfill route for MSW management (Position paper on
the solid waste management sector in India, (2009). However, these projections are on conservative side,
keeping 1.33% annual growth in per capita generation of MSW (Bhide & Shekdar 1998).
Need for the study
The significance of the study is to understand the importance of the Zero Plastic usage ,waste management and
recycling, and its impact on environment. The need to create awareness on plastic usage and waste management
which eventually going be a big problem in the future. To create awareness regarding the proper disposal of
waste. Understanding how recycling help to reducing the waste materials and helps in creating new materials
out of the waste which helps in reducing the usage of the new material, And how recycling works.
Recycling is still not known to a lot of people, and how it can help to reduce the use of the new materials and
create new objects out of waste. Introducing the recycling concept and creating awareness can help the
environment.
Waste management is not about just waste materials and recycling it can have many different areas and
subdivided into many some of them are Solid waste recycling, Organic waste recycling, Waste water recycling,
Agricultural waste recycling, Sustainable production and consumption patterns, Innovation processes,
Valorizing waste, Material flow analysis, Life cycle assessment and management of resources, Waste
generation, Waste prevention, Waste handling, Waste disposal, Waste recycling, New processes and
technologies, Landfill, Waste collection, Waste reduction, Composting, Energy production from waste, Waste
through better design, Improved recovery and re-use, Resource management, Procurement, planning, design,
construction. These are all part of waste management which can be studied into. Each area opens up a new
aspect. Recycling is also done with different materials like plastic, steel, paper etc.
Objectives of the study
To create awareness about waste management and recycling.
To create awareness about the problems caused and harmful effects by plastic
To initiate the eradication of plastic in the locality by the study of methods adopted in HSR layout
To create a change of perception in the minds of people regarding the waste management and recycling.
Research design:
Research design is the set of methods and procedures used in collecting and analyzing measures of variables
specified in the research problem.
Descriptive Research
Descriptive study is a fact finding investigation with adequate interpretation. It is also specific as it focuses on
particular aspects or dimensions of the project being undertaken.
Action Plan
Survey: A survey through questionnaires, to find the issues faced by the localities before the
implementation of zero plastic and waste management .
Campaign: Conducting a campaign for the localities of Andrahalli to create awareness regarding waste
management and zero plastic usage.
Data Collection
Data Collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on targeted variables in an established
system, which then enables one to answer relevant questions and evaluate the outcomes. The goal of all data
collection is to capture quality evidence that allow the analysis leads to the formulation of convincing and
credible answers to the questions.
Primary Data
Primary data are the original sources from which the researcher directly collects data that have not been
previously collected.
The method of data collection employed in this study is Questionnaire.
Secondary Data
Secondary data are those sources of data from which the researcher collects data have been previously
collected.
Plan of Analysis
Conducting survey and campaign among the locality and making them aware ill effects of using plastic and
managing waste for the well being of oneself and the society as a whole. The data collected is classified
tabulated and computed and will be represented in the form of graphs for the better picture of analysis.
CHAPTER-3
CURRENT INDIAN SCENARIO
Plastic in India has become an increasingly pressing problem over the years. With increasing dependence
on plastic, the tendency to dispose of plastic casually has also become a part of the mainstream. Over the years,
several waste to wealth mechanisms have been adopted to recycle and reuse plastic in innovative ways. One
such trend has been the conversion of plastic waste to fuel and making it usable for both domestic and industrial
purposes. Given India’s huge daily generation of over 15,000 tones of plastic, the prospects of conversion to
fuel are abundant, provided there is sufficient infrastructure available. The current Union government’s focus on
waste management via Swachh Bharat Abhiyan also addresses the issue of plastic waste and ways with which
the problem could be dealt with.
Industrialization becomes very significant for developing countries like India having large number of
population. Rapid increase in urbanization and per capita income lead to high rate of municipal solid waste
generation. In recent times, E-waste and plastic waste also contribute considerably to total waste stream due to
utilization of electronic and other items. These wastes may cause a potential hazard to human health or
environment if any of the aspects of solid waste management is not managed effectively. In India, approach
towards Solid waste management is still unscientific. Solid Waste collection efficiency in India is around 70%
(Sharholy et al. 2007), while same is almost 100% in the developed countries. Even today, large portion of solid
waste is dumped indiscriminately on outskirts of towns or cities without any prior treatment. This leads to
groundwater contamination and increase in air pollution due to leach ate percolation and release of gases
respectively. Various study reveals that out of total solid waste, 80% can be utilized again either by recycling or
reusing. Improper waste segregation and other factors lead recycling sector to work on outdated technology.
However, plastic and paper recycling have been especially growing due to continuous increasing consumption
of both the commodities.
CHAPTER-4
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
Introduction
After collecting the requisite secondary data relevant for the purpose of this project work, it was planes to
collect the primary data also on the theme’ s/ subject to a sample survey. Thus a suitable questionnaire was
design to obtain the views perceptions of respondent on relevant aspects. A copy is placed at annexure.
Methodology
In order to carry out the survey the random sampling was adopted as the target was to each department call
levels. The survey was conducted by meeting the despondence personally at the convenience and their choice.
Accordingly most of the respondents referred their living as they felt comfortable to fill the questionnaire
distributed among the despondence and it was also collected. All questionnaires took 4-5 hours to complete.
The primary data was collected by meeting 20 residents. The respondents were identified on random bases.
Accordingly the survey was completed on random sampling method.
