4 Typical environment, corrosivity category and durability

Paint system “C3” it is suitable for most industrial atmospheres, indoor and outdoor (atmospheres with moderate
pollution and aggressive ambient). The painting systems fulfil the requirements specified in the table below:

Corrosion category Durability (according

Typical environment characteristics
(according to ISO 12944-2&5) to ISO 12944-2)

Urban and industrial indoor and outdoor

atmospheres with moderate sulphur C3 H
dioxide pollution.
Coastal areas with low salinity.

5 Surface treatment
The preparation is done according to respective materials. For painting surfaces prepared with blast-cleaning,
painting is made according to the section 5.1 and 6.1. For other surfaces, the surface treatment and painting is
made like described in the section 5.2 and 6.2.

5.1 Steel and Cast-Iron Structures Cleaned with Blast-cleaning

As standard, the paint system described in this section is applied to all steel and zinc surfaces, which are
cleaned by blast-cleaning. Steel structures over 3 mm thickness and parts made of cast iron always belong to
this group. The surface preparation is made according to the ISO 12944-4 and related standards.
Preliminary cleaning: Solid impurities are removed. Water-soluble salts, greases and oils are
removed by using an alkaline or emulsion wash (ISO 12944-4).
The surfaces are rinsed with water.
Steel and cast-iron surfaces: Blast-cleaning to grade Sa 2½ according to standard ISO 8501 and Roughness
ISO 8503 Grade Fine to Medium.
Aluminium surfaces: The surfaces are roughened by grinding, or washing with an alkaline detergent,
and rinsed with water.
Zinc surfaces: Surfaces are lightly blast-cleaned by using clean and dry quartz sand as the
cleaning material.

Welds are carefully cleaned from spatters and holes before blast cleaning and painting. Any oil and grease
contamination shall be removed prior to blasting operation. Layers with a hard surface (e.g. flame-cut surfaces
of thick plates) are abraded before blast cleaning.

5.2 Un-abraded Sheet Metal Structures, certain Aluminium and Zinc Surfaces
The paint systems described in this section can be used as an alternative to 5.1, for metal surfaces that are
difficult to prepare with blast cleaning and that can be processed on a powder coating line. Parts within this
class include steel structures with a thickness of 3 mm or less and certain aluminium and zinc surfaces.
The surface preparation is made according to ISO 12944-4 and related standards.

Preliminary cleaning: Solid impurities are removed. Water-soluble salts, greases and oils are
removed by using an alkaline or emulsion wash (ISO 12944-4).
The surfaces are rinsed with water.
Steel surfaces (sheet metal): Zinc phosphatising, and passivating if possible (ISO 12944-4).
Aluminium surfaces: Chromating (ISO 12944-4).
Zinc surfaces: White rust is removed with alkaline wash (ISO 12944-4), and the surfaces are
zinc phosphatising or chromatized (ISO 12944-4).

- NCS 4822-B 05 G : (NCS = Natural Colour System)
- RAL : Exact RAL-code is not available for ABB Blue; a similar colour in the RAL-code is the
RAL 5010.

Final colour can be changed according to specific customer requests in this case the colour needs to be
specified in the purchase order.

8 Painting work
Painting is performed according to the instructions in the paint manufacturer's product data sheet. Paints are
applied by airless high-pressure spraying, making very attention to the all surfaces that are difficult to access,
for example edges, corners, welds and hidden corners. A brush is used for hard-to-spray and small objects.
All external surfaces of the machines are painted except the followings: shaft end, machined surfaces on the
machine’s feet, contact surfaces on earthing components, titanium, copper, brass, plastic, stainless steel,
chrome-plated, nickel-plated surfaces. Also steel and cast iron surfaces that have above 40 μm zinc coating
shall not be painted (zinc paint is not considered as zinc coating).

Flameproof joints for Ex-d machines and enclosures are not be painted, according to Ex standards requirement.
The parts that must remain free of paint are protected before application of the paint.
A reduced surface treatment is used inside the machines.
Pipes made of stainless steel connected to carbon steel are painted in such a way that the paint overlaps the
stainless steel by 50 mm.

8.1 Priming and Intermediate Coating

Parts of the machines are sprayed with primer immediately after surface preparation. Nominal dry film thickness
of the primer is according to tables of section 6.
Active parts (such as rotor and stator) are painted with special selected primers. The paints are accurately and
rigorously tested to guarantee compatibility with insulation system. These primers aren’t changed depending on
the selected painting system.

8.2 Final painting

After final assembly, the external surface of the machine is finished according to section 6.

9 Quality control - Measuring the Thickness of the Paint

The quality of paintwork and fulfilment of the required coat thicknesses will be monitored. Inspections will be
performed in accordance with this document and ISO 12944 standard. A summary of the results will be included
in the painting inspection record.
The permitted minimum coating thickness at any individual measuring point is 80% of the nominal coating
thickness (upper limit 300%), according to ISO 12944-5.
