Consistent set of measured
components for each site /
building throughout the
institution.

Will be looked at as an
accumulated value, as well as by
site.

Think about the following:

+How does component
compares to large scale of
institution?
+Should it be part of the 9-
month project or
suggested as a future
study?

Some sites may have different
elements that could be included
as a ‘satellite’ account.

Think about the following:

+ Will the measurement be
useful to reducing impact?
+Can the measurement be
used in other educational
ways?

‘Energy – Stationary Combustion’
refers to energy used for heating,
cooling, lighting, and any other
non-mobile equipment.

One of the most popular portions

of sustainability audits /
assessments.

Also serves as a stand-alone

option, as energy is typically the
largest component.

Note: Will include all of these

components in the scope.

S COPE -
I NSTITUTIONAL
‘Energy – Mobile Combustion’
refers to the energy associated
with powering vehicles, or other
transportation components (ie
buses, trains, etc.)

May not be too useful for our

purposes as we cannot chose the
fleet vehicles provided by the
State, and we do not have much
time in our project to influence
transportation changes by
employees or visitors.

results.

Note: Discussion centered around the

amount driven from site to site.

Most felt it was important to include the

CO2 from driving, even if it will be small
compared to the rest of the institution’s
CO2 figures.

Calculating the employee travel may

help justify the use of video
conferencing, combining trips, or
different vehicle selections.

I NSTITUTIONAL
‘Wood-based Resources’ refers to
the use of any wood resources.
Typically, this includes
construction components, but
given the existing structures, we
would look at items we keep
consuming.

Exhibits mostly applies to exhibit

changes at the History Center, but
can inform future exhibits at any
site.

Paper usage could be expanded

to any paper-products purchased
by the institution, as long as there
are receipts.

Note: Exhibit materials from Chocolate

already behind, new exhibits planned to
use less material and more recycling.
Exhibit information to be used in
recommendations area for further study
and collection of documentation.
Gather exhibit resources in final
document.

Note: Paper products will be tracked via billing at

individual sites as well as through Karen. While
small, could be the basis for a public / employee
centered PR campaign. Might only focus on subset
of paper products, depending on data available.

I NSTITUTIONAL
‘Process Driven’ refers to any
special processes occurring at a
site. Typically, this would also
include industrial processes,
which do not apply to our sites.

Processes related to programming

and education, not production.
May not indicate anything we can
change.

Could be interesting educational

components for the site,
especially the farm.

Note: Farm CO2 accounting is still a

topic of debate in sustainability. There
may not be many benchmarks to use to
compare Kelly Farm with modern farms.
However, establishing calculation will be
useful for educational purposes, and for
future study.

and used to justify cutting programs?
Will do initial data collection and audit
to see what information can be used.

‘Waste’ refers to any solid waste
diverted to landfills, or
incinerators. The net impact of
recycling (energy recovered vs
energy used to recycle) is
subtracted from waste totals.

Difficult to track given many sites

do not know the weights, but can
use typical composition figures
and estimates based on size of
receptacles and pick ups.

May be interesting / educational

to see impact of History Center

Gray X’s indicate discussion

Note: Some more discussion needs to

happen in terms of what is included in
the café processes. Energy, water, and
major utilities are already included since
most cafes are tied to the buildings
being studied. However, going further
up the supply chain to food gets into a
similar study as in the Farming practices Consider food production
at Kelly Farm. Will collect data, and and food waste. See what

deciding to include in the

‘Water’ refers to any water usage
in the building and on the site.
This can also include any
landscape recovery that has
increased site infiltration of water.

Often overlooked category for

sustainability audits, but
importance of fresh water supply
is becoming more popular.

Typically, site changes are more

impactful than plumbing usage.

Include certain Process-Driven
components for some sites that
could use the information.

For example:
Kelly Farm could use the CO2
footprint of their 1820s farm and
compare it to modern industrial
or organic farms.

Note: Question about building repairs

and including materials. Data from last
2 years could be used, but would be an
intensive and time-consuming study.
May not be as useful. Consider only a
few sites or construction projects.

Wood-Based Resources > Paper Products (History Center)
Waste Water > Sites Impact (large land cover sites)
Water Waste > Composted / Feed > Cafes (History

Note: Will collect data for many of the

site specific components, but will keep
to December deadline to acquire
information. Some components may
become recommendations for future
