SUNIA 2019
WELCOME
It is our pleasure to welcome you to SUNIA’s 67th year!
The first thing we would like you to know is not to fear! You don’t need to to
any kind of research before you come out to SUNIA, so whether you consider
yourself an international affairs expert, or this is your first time learning
about things like the UN, we promise you will learn a ton of cool stuff out at
SUNIA, and have a great time doing it.
If you’re super hyped about the UN, you can get in touch with our Security
Council Coordinator, Andrew Zhao, at any time. He’d be happy to talk to you
about anything UN-related, or answer any questions you might have. You can
reach him at andrew@sunia.ca if you’re looking for more information.
We are so incredibly excited to meet you out at SUNIA, and we hope that you
are as excited as we are! You’re about to embark upon the best week of your
summer, soaking up the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains and
making new friend from all over the place.
Although technology is a great way to get to know people back home, we like
to kick it old school out at SUNIA. SUNIA is an incredible experience, and we
encourage you to live in the moment as much as possible! As well, the wifi
connection at Goldeye isn’t great, and although you’ll have time to keep your Snap streaks
alive at night, you’ll be so busy with our jam-packed schedule of programming during the
day that you won’t really have time to text. We encourage you to leave your cell phones at
home if you can bear it, or to at least leave them in your cabins during the day.
SUNIA will challenge you, enrich you, and give you a chance to step out of your comfort
zone. We encourage you to take full advantage of that opportunity, and to embrace
everything that SUNIA has to offer. SUNIA is a once in a lifetime experience, and both of us
can honestly say that our time with SUNIA has shaped us fundamentally as people. We
hope that you get to share the same kind of life-changing experience both we and so many
others have had with this organization.
If you have any questions about any of this stuff, or anything else in advance of SUNIA,
please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can find a lot of information, as well as the
contact information of all of our staff, on our website, sunia.ca.
On behalf of our 2019 SUNIA staff, we cannot wait to meet you this summer, and are so
excited to experience SUNIA with you!

SCHEDULE
GET WRECK'D
SUNIA wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t take advantage of the beautiful lakes, rivers,
mountains and forests that David Thompson Country has provided us with!
During each and every afternoon that you spend with us out at SUNIA you will have the
opportunity to take advantage of swimming and canoeing in Lake Goldeye, as well as
playing almost any sport you can imagine in our Games Field! However, the highlight of
WRECK will be, without a doubt, our hikes. It is safe to say that some of the best
memories you will share with us will include enjoying amazing panoramic views from
atop Mount Baldy. This means that proper footwear, a water bottle and a camera are
must haves! While the hikes are extremely doable, be sure to bring any medication you
might need (whether it’s for allergies or asthma), because nobody wants to be caught in
the middle of a hike without it.
While helmets, shin guards and full suits of armour might be a little unnecessary, it is
always a safe idea to take a look through the packing list provided in this Tourguide! I
would advise to triple check that you have brought EVERYTHING on the list, because it’s
no fun getting caught in the Rocky Mountains without a change of socks. Finally, do as
the name suggests and do not bring anything from the ‘DO NOT BRING’ section of the
packing list. I’m sure this requires no further explanation.
I’m so excited to meet all of you this August, and wish you the best of luck in trying to
beat us “highly athletic” counsellors to the top of Mount Baldy!
Cheers,
Alex Erickson

SECURITY COUNCIL
Welcome to the next marvellous section of this Tour Guide! These next few pages hold
a wealth of information, young grasshopper. Here you will find out everything you
need to know about one of the most exciting parts of SUNIA: our Model United
Nations Security Council (or just SC, as we like to call it)! Flip through these next few
pages to learn about the conflict we will be discussing, what to expect out at SUNIA,
and much much more.
So… what the heck is a Model United Nations Security Council? Well on Friday, the
final day of SUNIA, you get to represent a country at a mock meeting of the UN
Security Council. Specifically, you will be debating, amending, and voting on a draft
resolution, which is a proposed plan of action submitted by one country. The draft
resolution isn’t included in the Tour Guide—you will receive it at the beginning of the
week! If your Council decides to pass the draft resolution, it will become international
law.
Your goal as a representative on the Council is to pass a draft resolution that both
makes strides towards peace, and is in your country’s interest. By the time that
meeting rolls around, you will know your country’s foreign policy inside out, and be
able to debate with other countries about how to best solve the conflict at hand. This
year, the Council will be debating the topic of “The Situation in Venezuela.” Each
member of the Council will have different motivations and priorities during the
debate. Your job is to advocate for your country’s interests, and to work with your
fellow diplomats to achieve peace. You will receive your country assignment when you
get to SUNIA!
Throughout the week, you’ll participate in both country sessions and council sessions,
which will help you prepare for Friday’s meeting. During these sessions, you’ll have
time to seek out representatives of other countries who share your country’s ideas,
and together propose amendments to the draft resolution so that it fits better with
your country’s foreign policy The most intense negotiations will take place during
these sessions, but there will be many opportunities throughout the week to soften up
other delegates. By the end of the week, you’ll be a pro at working with other countries
and advancing your policies.
All countries play an important role in the Model Security Council. Superpowers alone
cannot pass draft resolutions without the support of other members. Most
importantly though, it is important that the international community be in agreement
about any proposed actions. Speaking with one, united voice is key in diplomacy at the
UN. If the international community is divided, it weakens the impact of the resolution.
That is why it is important for you, and all of your fellow representatives, to be
involved in amending and passing the draft resolution. You will have to negotiate,
debate, and compromise like true diplomats!
On Friday, the draft resolution will be the only item on the Council’s agenda. The order
of proceedings, which is based on actual Security Council meetings, will go something
like this:
Each representative will give a brief 2–3 minute opening speech on their country’s
general policy (don’t worry, we’ll help you set this up throughout the week, you’ll
have tons of time to prepare!)
General debate on the draft resolution and amendments
Voting
Final speeches
You may be thinking, “Oh no! I’ve never done anything like this before!” Don’t sweat it,
because your well-read and eternally wise counsellors are there to guide you every
step along the way. You don’t need any Model UN or debate experience to have a good
time. All we ask is that you keep an open mind, and let the magic of SUNIA carry you
along on this wonderful journey!
Between now and SUNIA, don’t hesitate to reach out to me, your Security Council
Coordinator, or any of the other of our fabulously knowledgeable counsellors on staff.
Our emails are all on the SUNIA website, and we are happy to answer any questions
you might have about SUNIA, or just life in general. I’m looking forward to meeting you
all out at SUNIA!

JOYOUS RANDOM
READING
Well, that's it for the "information" part of this Tourguide! If you have any questions
on the above, please reach out to Registrar Alex Erickson at registrar@sunia.ca.
From here, we've included a few pieces designed purely for your entertainment. Some
members of staff thought they would share some tips, wisdom, factoids, and tidbits
from their many years of life and living.
But worry not, my new friend. Like you, I too was young and naive, a mere rookie in the
unforgiving seas of storytelling. I learned the hard way that a single misstep led to
being washed astray by the tempestuous tide of an audience’s impatience and
emotions. And yet, it was only through trial and error, and a little research of my own,
that I was able to become a formidable storyteller, capable of traversing the sea of
emotions that we call the human psyche. It is this knowledge that I freely share with
you today, in the hopes that you too will become an adept sailor, confident in the
power of your words alone.
Without further ado, here are Captain [redacted]’s Three Tips for Storytelling Success:
1.Embrace Your Style
Now, I’d just be straight-up lying if I said that there was a specific formula to being a
masterful storyteller. I mean, just think about some of your favourite storytellers,
whether they’re friends, family, celebrities, etc. Do they all have the same way of
telling stories? Of course not! Each of them have at least one of their own little quirks
– perhaps a difference in body language, word choice, or the tone of their voice. These
little “quirks” are ultimately what make up our style; in other words, our natural way of
communicating with other people. So if there’s something about the way that you
speak that you’re not happy about, then the first thing to do is ask yourself if you can
change it. If the answer to that question is no, then simply throw those worries aside! I
know it’s easier said than done, but the sooner you cast away your fears and come to
recognize the numerous strengths you have, the sooner you’ll be on your way to
becoming a full-fledged storytelling master.
3. Silence is Powerful
With the tip about avoiding extra details being said, it’s important that you don’t rush.
On the contrary, knowing when to have pauses, usually to gather your thoughts or for
dramatic effect, is often what makes the difference between a good storyteller and a
great one. This is probably one piece of advice that you’ve already heard many times
before, but that’s because it’s something that should never be forgotten. Of course,
don’t expect to immediately be a pro at this; learning to incorporate pauses at the right
moment, while ensuring that it doesn’t clash with your style, is difficult to say the least.
With the right amount of dedication and patience, however, it is a skill that’s possible
for anyone to pick up.
On a side note, make sure to end a story properly. For example, concluding a story with
“so…yeah”, or rambling on with the intention to begin another story will not get the
reaction you’re looking for. If anything, it’ll turn off people from asking you to tell stories
in the future (if that hasn’t happened already). Concluding with your punchline is often
more than enough, and remembering to share the stage with others shows that you’re a
thoughtful listener as well.
And there you have it! With these tips in that big brain of yours, you’re well on your way
to become a certified master of storytelling! And what better place to show off your
skills and improve your street cred than SUNIA, where you’ll make friends in no time!
Legend has it that the man who came up with those tips, Captain [redacted], will be there
himself – so who knows, if you’re lucky, you might even have the opportunity to meet
him...
Hype Songs
Music has been used with great versatility throughout the history of mankind, for
everything from social events to self-reflection and meditation. The power of music
that has been historically referred to as a somewhat magical property takes root in its
ability to activate certain emotional processes in the brain, bringing about the
activation of the areas of the brain associated with stress and emotional regulation, and
processes that produce the feeling of euphoria. This power that music has on the mind
is commonly used to achieve the greater sense of motivation we’re looking for, and
seeing its importance, here’s a list of killer hype up songs that can get you pumped:
Headlines by Drake
Formation by Beyoncé
The Greatest by Sia ft. Kendrick Lamar
Champion by Kanye West
All I do is Win by DJ Khalid
Up All Night by Drake, Nicki Minaj
The Law of Attraction is a theory that suggests that we attract the energy that we emit,
meaning that individuals can achieve anything that they focus on. In short: mindset is
everything. The exact science behind this theory has been subject to debate, however,
many cases have demonstrated its success in those who practice it. There are many
ways that we can implement this theory in our lives, all of which aim to consistently
remind and solidify the goals individuals have for themselves. A good way of practicing
this is making a dream board. This board can be electronic or physical, and allows you to
think about what exactly you want in life and who you’d like to become. Through
compiling pictures and quotes that remind you of where you want to be, it becomes
easier to start taking action to becoming that person.
Quarter Calendar
The surge of motivation that we experience at the beginning of a New Year comes from
the associated notion of a fresh start. As such, we become motivated to take advantage
of this, assessing the previous year and making changes for the year to come. While it is
great that we grant ourselves this moment of reflection and recharge annually, the
effectiveness of it has been found to increase when we allow ourselves to have these
fresh starts multiple times throughout the year. With this, goals become more focused
and realistic to the limited time spans granted, as opposed to the general resolutions we
hope to accomplish sometime throughout the year. This also allows us to stop bad habits
and establish better ones more frequently. Many implement this tactic through turning
to the Quarter Calendar method, splitting the year into four quarters, reflecting and
making resolutions at the beginning of each.
Movies
Apart from their role in entertainment, film as an art is meant to speak to a greater truth
about the human condition. Many movies are made with the aim to communicate deeper
truths about ourselves, teach us life lessons, and convey their messages through
storytelling, which is a key process in our learning as a species. As such, these movies can
sometimes give us insights into ourselves and push us to implement their messages in
our own lives. For this reason, I leave with you some of the movies that changed my life,
and that I turn to for an increase in motivation.
The Imitation Game
A historical film about Alan Turing, the man who cracked the Nazi’s enigma code
through creating the first computer. A central quote from this film has resonated
with me since the first time I had watched it, and truly speaks to the films power,
stating: “Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things
no one can imagine.”
Creed
Admittedly this was mainly included in the list because of the lead actor and love
of my life Michael B Jordan, but the story of Adonis Creed rising from nothing as
he battles internal conflict really spoke to my soul and inspired my career as a
boxer. As you could guess it didn’t quite take off but it motivated me to do
something nonetheless so that’s a win.
Legally Blonde
Although this movie’s central aim is in its comedic delivery, the story of Elle Woods
defeating all odds to go to Harvard Law somehow resonates, despite its evident
lack of realism. Rising successful despite the world expecting otherwise strikes
that cord, and even if this is not conveyed for you, the movie is still worth the
watch.
That’s all we have for you for now. Now get out there and go get that bread!
Come to SUNIA!!!
Not satisfied after all of that well boy do I have a solution for you, you can come to
SUNIA! It’s easy to run out of things to do or feel like you’ve wasted a summer of
precious time, but at SUNIA you are guaranteed good summer vibes and making a
bunch of new friends. At Goldeye Center we get to go swimming, canoeing, hiking and
generally have good wholesome times. If you ever get tired of ‘Berta this area is a
hidden gem and a reminder that Alberta is also really beautiful.
1. Know your limits. Don’t take on more than you can handle at any given time,
because you will almost always be worse off for it. If you can’t devote enough of an
effort to something to do a good job on it, you’ll feel worse, not better. Instead, do
your very best on the things you can, and then focus on the next thing that comes up.
It may feel like a weakness not to be able to everything like some kind of Superman,
but after way too much time destroying myself with overscheduling, I’ve finally
come to recognize how important it is.
2. Take time for yourself. This is obviously different for everyone, but it really just
means that sometimes you need to focus on you. It could mean taking a hot bath, or a
long walk. Personally, I find meditation a really useful tool to manage stress, as it’s
super relaxing, there are a huge number of resources to help people of all levels of
experience get what they need out of it, and you can do it basically anywhere, as long
as you can find a reasonably quiet corner, whenever you feel like you need to slow
things down. Really, though, anything that lets you detach from other people for a
little while and focus on what you need is good.
3. Do what makes you happy. Risk-taking is an important part of life, but sometimes,
it’s really great to focus on something you know and love, to remind you that it’s not
all swirling chaos. In my experience, this can have a huge effect on calming you down
and allowing you to recharge. I’ve watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off more times than
I can count, and whenever I feel like life is spiralling out of control, I like to remind
myself that there’s a movie I can quote almost line for line, with a story that I know
the ending to. If Matthew Broderick can keep everything under control, maybe I can
too.
4. Finally, keep yourself fed and watered. Yes, this is a very simple piece of advice, but
I cannot stress it enough. It doesn’t matter how much you have to do, or when that
appointment is, not eating will never do you any good. Whether that means lots of
small snacks or a standard breakfast, lunch, dinner schedule, just make sure you’re
getting what you need. Going without eating will make you more stressed, less
productive, and worse to be around, and nobody wants that.
I sincerely hope these tips are useful to you, and that they can help you avoid some of
the summer freakouts I’ve experienced in the past. Thank you so much for reading, and
I can’t wait to meet and chat with every single one of you out at SUNIA!
The Dad Jokebook
Hey students! I know firsthand the struggle of meeting new people, especially
overcoming that dreadfully awkward first interaction. But, let me tell you, there is a
quick way to overcome this awkward phase and make conversation instantly!
JOKES!
Yes, too many jokes can be quite corny, and too little will give you the appearance of
being dry, but, gaining the skill of recognizing a dying conversation, and combating it
with a quick remark of witty humor is of PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE, as it will not only
allow you to revive the conversation, but will establish you as a confident, light-hearted
person.
As such, I have compiled a list of some one liners, knock-knocks, dad jokes, and short
stories you can tell to anyone you please or wish to befriend, whether it be the person
sleeping in the bunk below yours, or the girl with red hair from cabin 4 ;)
I know that many of you will have jokes in your arsenal already, and, by all means, fire
away! Just keep your audience in mind, ensuring that your remarks are not offensive or
too polarizing, as they will have the OPPOSITE EFFECT as intended with a joke!
1.OPEN UP
Knock Knock!
Who’s there?
Candice.
Candice who?
CANDICE DOOR OPEN, or am I stuck out here?
2. COW COMPILATION
3. ARTISTRY
A man showed up for a duel, armed with only a pencil and paper.
*DRAMATIC PAUSE*
He then proceeded to draw his weapon.
And so, I leave you- to find jokes of your own, and to express your creativity vicariously
through yourself! Have fun with it :)
