ARCHITECTURE UGM

INTRODUCTION

Structure and construction are matters in buildings.

both could not be ignored or separated. Structure
makes building stand firm with aesthetic in addition
and construction determines the way we build. To be
a good architect, we do not only to know it in class,
but we have to understand it too at the field. to fulfill
student's necessary knowledge about structure and
construction, a field study held by visiting the
lecturer's work.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Dr. Ing. Ir. Eugenius Pradipto

Born in Gunung Kidul, 29th October

1956.  We commonly call him as
'Bapak'. A Lecturer of Structure and
Construction at Architecture UGM.
Bapak known as a Bamboo Structure
Specialist proven by won the 2010
Best Patent Work Award.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Maria Ariadne Dewi Wulansari, S.T, M.T

Ms. Dewi, a young lecturer in

Architecture UGM. Collaborating with
Mr. Pradipto in SK 1 and also become
lecturer in SDA subject.
DEC. 2017 • DESTINATION NUMBER : 1

BOARDING HOUSE
PAKEL ALLEY, KARANGWUNI, CATURTUNGGAL.

The construction
begin at February
2017 and now already
finsihed. The detailing
is on going. There are
12 rooms in this
boarding house.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE

the columns of this building are built inside the wall,

we can only see the horizontal support structure
popping out to hold the upper floor.
The support system typically use iron as its frame and
filled with concrete mixture. there are bonding
between perpendicular support.

Vertical. Mass.
The wall as vertical mass stabilized by strong
foundations. the foundation itself use reinforced
steel foundation type which is stable and rigid
enough to hold forces such as wind blow and
earthquake. The sculpture outside the building also
uses iron as its body frame. This curvy linear beam
column structure gives additional touch for an
aesthetic facade. furthermore, it gives also
additional strength to the foremost wall.
ROOF
the iconic thing mostly noticed
easily inside is the roof. The
roof use asbestos free wavy
transparent roof, Solartuff.
Solartuff is a corrugated
polycarbonate sheet with
superior transparency and
toughness.

the structure support of the

roof is made from woods.
specifically coconut trunk.
Bapak picks the coco-trunk
because it is low cost wood but
comes with a good strength
quality. even so, its fiber seems
larger and sharper than any
other wood so the workmen
should be more careful about
to smoothen the surface.

to prevent the heat accumulation also in

order to keep the airflow good, Bapak
added two apertures on west and east side
of the roof. the position of the aperture and
the roof itself have been adjusted in context
of dynamic weather.
Bapak creates a new style on the roof frame. the angular joint mean as
the strongest frame. the repetition between vertical and horizontal
elements give unity impression to the frame. the trestle used at the top
of the roof to connect each rafter and it also give a strong bonding
between side of the roof. to give touch on the batten look, bapak uses
pattern on its installation, Bapak arranged the battens by turns. That
method also make the installation easier because if we put the batten
in one straight line, the joints between batten-rafter-batten add more
challenge and also adding risks for em to bend.
the stair in the boarding house also
iconic too. it made also from the coco-
wood. the joint has more than one
method, there are interlocking,
hooked lip, and other one use nut and
bold. between the wood and the floor
given iron plat to prevent the water
from damaging the wood parts.
UNI
QUE
Bapak has a patent of his
finding. he had created his
own style on glass window
using stained glass pieces.
bapak made it by creating
the pattern on the base
frame with iron wire. then
lying the glass on first layer
then wrap it with the
second layer.
bapak use two main
building style,. this boarding
house is a combination
between woody and
minimalist
Huge windows applied on
the foremost wall. when
back light, The windows
gives an emotional feeling
from the shades and colors
of the glass.

GLONDONGAN HOUSE
GLONDONGAN, PAKEM, SLEMAN

A PRIVATE VILLA
This is not a public space, however it is a private house belong to one of Bapak's family
member.
this house make its occupants feel relaxed. how come? the atmosphere take us to a
nature style living. this house designed by bapak around 10 years ago, before merapi
erupted and damaged some parts of this house.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE

this house has no vertical column that can directly seen. but the
roof's support structure can be seen obviously extend above
our head. The triangle support connected directly to the wall. it
means the wall functioned as support wall. there are bracing
surrounding along the upper wall. strengthen the wall as one
unity.

this house mainly use woods as part of its structure. Bapak

seems fall in love with natural elements such as bamboo too.
but, the uses of woods also give it more natural sense to the
building, moreover this house located at green land of Sleman.
the air very clean and fresh. the house doesn't use any air
conditioner, however Bapak made so many aperture below the
roof. the air flow is very good.
Vertical Mass./

this building use three kind of walls as its vertical mass.

Wood, Glass, And Concrete. Those mass supported (seems)
by reinforced iron foundation too, as house in general. the
wide glass could stand stable by the help of Jati fame
around it. the use of glass wall gives more advantage such
as natural lighting, reduce the use of artificial light. the jati
door wall also jointed to the concrete wall frame by
interlock.
Roof. Ceiling.

the house has no ceiling. when we look up, we can see the roof
structure obviously. the rafter and also the batten. there we can
find a lot of hooked lip joints that strengthen by nuts and bolds.
The roof has a big tilt degree. the more tilted the better roof can
flow the mass on it, such as rain water.

the best length of the joint placement point is at 1/3 from each
support column. the 1/3 point has no force or just less force than
any other point along the crosswise column.

the stair made spiral. it strengthen by  only nut

and bold. the steps jointed to one single wood
column.

There is one brave installation, the baluster along the second

floor jointed by only nut and bold, so it is a little bit damaging
if the load gives bigger force than it could hold. last time we
try to hold on, it's already loose.

PLEMBURAN HOUSE
WOODY HOUSE, EXPOSED STRUCTURE

'BAPAK BANGET' STYLE

this house also use wood
almost entire of its part. but, we can see the
what unique from the house structures inside are
is the facade or it looks just just similar to the
very representing Bapak's
previous house. the
style. With rooftop roof and
main shape of the
aperture below.
upper wall is triangle
the wood used also similar
shaped following the
with the previous house. but
here are about two different
roof style. the are
woods used. Jati and Coconut more crosswise
the owner is one of Bapak's columns used.  not
relations, She is a psychology only concrete
lecturer. The owner seems column but also
loved to gardening and wood column. some
farming. because there are of the column had
lot of trees and fishes around.
been cut out
this house built on contoured
because the owner

part has two floor levels.
Vertical Mass
the vertical mass mainly
made from concrete,
there are few huge
masses that perforated in
some points. the
perforated parts used as
windows and doors. the
windows give a
significant natural
lighting, once again there
are less
artificial lights in bapak's design, natural airflow aperture,
and the uses of stained color glass to the window. the
other vertical mass is the slide wall. the wall made from
wood and jointed by iron frame to the main wall. those
walls stand firmly by the support of foundation below the
ground.

the material used for the wall is red

bricks. the red brick mostly
uncovered by mixtures, it leaves a
good natural sense for the house. the
door frame below made by intact
teak. it relies on pressure force from
above. the joint is not nailed at all.
ROOF. Stairs

the roof of the house are similarly same

with the glondongan house roof. but the
cover below is made from woven
bamboo sheets. the columns are look
more complex than the previous one. it
is also uses hooked lip joint with nut
and bold as additional.
both of the stairs
are made with
intact teak woods
that. different with
the previous stair
style. this one gives
more natural sense
and also has more
rough surface. even
so, the steps could
be more slippery
than the proceeded
one.

Bapak's design on
this stairs are little
bit dangerous to
use. the uncut part
of the trunk can be
reached by our
head and causing
impact and bruise.
but the advantage,
this design creates
air flow through its
apertures proven
by the existence of

conclusion
Learning structure and construction directly
from the building gives more advantage and
open the student minds to the real conditions
at the field. student can be triggered to be
curious about anything the see at the field. it
is also a media to solve the wandering minds
about something not clear that students have.

Impression
this field study could be my new experience. knowing
further about structure and construction directly at the
field makes me understand. the trip also fun tho.
