Breakout #7

Date: October 29th, 2019.

Break-Out Title/Topic: Sensation and Perception. Resources Time

Bridge-in: 0.5
- Today, we will be taking a look into how we sense and
perceive the world around us.

Pre-Assessment: 5.0
- What are the five basic senses we learned about in class
today?
- If you had to live without one of your senses, which would
it be and why?
- *Mentor instruction* Have each student pull out two pencils
or pens. Have them all close one eye, hold one pencil/pen
in each hand out at arm’s length and attempt to touch the
tips. Attempt again with the opposite eye closed. Explain to
the students that this exercise demonstrates depth
perception.

Learning Objective: 0.5

- By the end of our activities today, we all should have a
better idea of how our sense and perceptions of the world
come into play in our everyday lives.

Participatory Activity: Activity one- 15.00

1. Activity one: instruction perception. Supply each student 14 pieces of
with a piece of paper. Instruct the students to do the paper.
following;
 Hold the paper out in front of you. Activity two-
 Fold the paper in half. 7 plastic cups
 Rip a hole in the center of the paper. and 7 paper
 Fold the paper in half. clips.
 Rip a hole in the left and right corners of the paper.
*SPECIAL NOTE* If any student asks for instruction
clarification, repeat the instruction the exact same way
again. You are not to influence the outcome of their
paper in any way.
2. Have the students unfold their papers and look around at
theirs and each other’s. Ask students what they think the
exercise was looking at. Answers to look for; we perceive
instructions differently from each other. Compare this to
the world. Each person’s perception of the world differs
from one another, no matter how slightly. These
perceptions are influenced by everything in our lives, both
past and present.
3. Activity two; paperclip drop. Explain that this activity will
test vision and depth perception. Pair the students in
groups of two.
4. Supply each group with a paper clip and plastic cup.
5. Instruct the students to do the following;
 One student will sit with the plastic cup two feet in
front of them. That student will hold the paper clip
while the other student attempts to vocally guide
them to drop the paper clip in the plastic cup whilst
having one eye closed. You will attempt this three
times, and then swap, trying another three times.
 For the next round, the guide may keep both eyes
open, but the person dropping the paperclip must
keep both eyes closed for all three trials. After
three, swap roles again.

Post-Assessment 8.5
- How did everyone do on the “one eyed” trial?
- How about on the “eyes closed” trial?
- After these activities, does your answer change to what
sense you think you could live without? Why/why not?

Summary 0.5
- Now hopefully after today, everyone should have a better
idea on how our sensations and perceptions come into
play in our everyday lives.
