Overview
During a typical installation it is recommended to verify the connections and operation in simulation mode the first
time power is applied. Simulation mode involves eliminating the x-ray tube rotor, inverter voltage, filament
heating, and the CPU error checking circuits. This lab will also address initializing the generator and calibrating the
generator console touch screen. It is everything you would typically do in an installation before and after turning on
the generator.
Procedure
1. Before turn – on
a. X-ray simulation mode can be completed by the following:
1. Disabling power to inverter: Disconnect J2 (MGL) on Terminal 2002 pcb
2. Disabling filament drive power: Disconnect J2 on mA power 2002 pcb
3. Disabling the starter: Disconnect JS1 cable on UD cont 2002 pcb
4. Disabling error detection: Set SW4-4=ON on UD cont 2002 pcb
b. Verifying transformer taps
1. Locate the generator’s 2 transformers T1 & T2. Set the taps on both to match the
incoming line voltage.
2. After turn – on
a. Verifying voltages
1. Measure L0 and L100
b. Initializing the generator.
1. This is not required during installation. Prior initialization, always make sure you have
system backup; or in a new installation (as in our case), record the volume settings.
Verify that there is no radiation in simulation mode. Explain how you confirmed this.

Lab 3: Service Mode
Overview
The service mode consists of two components: Setup and Adjust. Setup is the configuration options for the
generator, consisting of defining system ratings, creating available techniques, identifying the tube installed,
ARCNET and serial communication settings, programming signals, and other miscellaneous settings. Adjust the
various calibrations the system requires including FVR and phototiming. These menus are very different between
the B/V/L-40 type generator and the L-40E/F generator. Use the L-40E/F simulator console and compare these
differences.
Procedure
1. Become familiar with entering the service mode.
2. Configure the system per the instructions in the Generator Installation Manual
a. RATIO [3.2.4]
b. TECH [3.2.5]
c. TUBE [3.2.6]
d. COMMUNICATION [13.3]
e. SIGNAL [3.2.7]
f. OPTION [3.2.8]
3. Calibrate the system per the instructions in the Generator Installation Manual.
a. FVR
i. X-ray will need to be enabled. Take the system out of simulation mode and use appropriate
caution.
ii. Set up an oscilloscope and measure TkV and TmA during calibration.
iii. Setting SW2:3=ON [SA CONT-2002] enables the starter to remain in high speed
b. Phototiming
i. Since we don’t have a film processor available, we will not be able to do phototiming
calibration in this lab. Familiarize yourself with the process, however.
Results
Record the waveforms for TmA and TkV:
1. Compare the TmA waveform during calibration when feedback is off and a normal exposure when
feedback is on. What is the difference between these signals?

Lab 4: Generator Operation
Overview
Setting up the generator for clinical applications may be the role of an applications specialist, but a basic
understanding of the system operation and programming APR’s is critical to servicing the system adequately. Again
the L40E/F generator is quite different in setting up APR’s. Use the L40E/F simulator to become familiar with its
interface.
Procedure
4. Create some radiographic programs in these tabs with multiple steps. The copy and move functions can
save time when setting up new APR’s.
5. Familiarize yourself with the other items in the Setup Screen; the System, AEC, and Console settings.
Results
How many radiographic programs can be stored to memory for the B/V/L-40 console? For the L40E/F console?
Overview
When troubleshooting the system it is important to know which waveforms to check and what they should look
like. During installation and when boards are replaced in the field, the system should also be checked for proper
operation. This lab presents an abbreviated procedure for checking proper operation and has you record
waveforms from a real system to compare with the illustrations in the product literature.
Procedure
1. Review the block diagram below. Reference the procedure for verifying the x-ray tube filament heating
circuit in section 4.9 of the generator installation manual. Record the measured waveforms specified below.
a. Complete preparation for test operation, section 4.8 in generator installation manual.
b. Verify the software controlled filament heating gate waveforms, Q1-4 L & Q2-3 L during standby
and prep. The frequency is maintained at 20kHz, but the pulse width or duty cycle should increase
during prep.
c. With the system off, connect J1 to supply power to the filament heating inverter
d. Do not create a filament simulator as mentioned in the installation book, but verify the waveform of

2. Review the block diagram below. Reference the procedure for verifying the kV circuit in section 4.10 &
4.11 of the installation manual or section 6.1 in the service manual. Record the measured waveforms
specified below.
a. Complete preparation for test operation, section 4.8 in generator installation manual.
b. Either jumper CP20 [VSIN] to CP3 [+15V] or enter “check 7FF” into teraterm to simulate an
exposure condition.
c. Verify the oscillation frequency at F. VR2 can be adjusted if necessary.
d. Verify the oscillation pulse width at AD and BC. VR1 can be adjusted if necessary.
e. Remove the jumper above or enter “check 7EF” into teraterm to end exposure simulation.
f. With power off, Connect J8 and J10 on the UD Cont 2002 pcb
g. Take an exposure while measuring CP5, 6 [GE] on channel 1 and CP7, 8 [GE] on channel 2 of
the scope. VR1 can be adjusted if necessary.
h. Restore system back to normal condition and verify the tube voltage feedback by measuring

How many click dogs are required in a standard RadSpeed installation? How many in a Tomo installation?
Overview
System tracking, position detection, and detents are all determined by the Pots, Clickdogs, and Photosensors of the
system. An understanding of how to setup and manipulate these items will enable the system to run smoothly long
after installation
Procedure
1. Pots
a. There are many ways to verify the potentiometer positioning
i. DAC value in the calibration menu
ii. DAC value in Teraterm “check” command [1.6 in Maintenance section of CH-200 Install]
iii. Corresponding analog voltage measurement on the CHD-200 or CHC-200 pcb’s
2. Clickdogs
a. Since the CH-200 longitudinal or transverse position registration is done in the click dogs
(depending on wall stand orientation), it is necessary to have them set prior to calibration
b. The click dogs should be set such that the SID to the wall stand is 40 or 72 inches and that the wall
and table are centered correctly.
3. Photosensors
a. The longitudinal and transverse detent detection requires 3 inputs, the solenoid pin, and two
photosensors. When the states of all these signals are correct the detent indication is lit on the CH-
200 display.

b. Adjust photosensor sensitivity trimmer if necessary and fill out the chart below with three different
ways to determine the photosensor state other than the photosensor activation indicator
What is the range of DAC values and analog voltage for the CH-200 longitudinal pot?
Often a recessed room lamp in the ceiling above a detent can disrupt the photosensor’s operation. What could be
done in addition to careful adjustment of photosensor sensitivity trimmer to improve response?

Lab 9 ARCNET Communication
Overview
ARCNET is a local area network protocol similar to Ethernet. It is employed in the RadSpeed system as a means to
communicate between the generator and the CH-200 system. Arcnet communication is setup by daisy-chaining
components and providing a resistive termination at both ends of the configuration. The advantage to this setup is
no network hub is required. However if one component fails, it disrupts communication on the entire network.
The objective of this lab is to guide you through identifying and efficiently troubleshooting an ARCNET network.
