Greek Summer, created in 1970, promotes intercultural exchange between
Americans and Greeks under the sponsorship of the American Farm School, an
independent, nonprofit school serving the rural youth of Greece and the Balkans.
The program is made for young people who are enthusiastic about immers-
ing themselves in another culture, contributing to the quality of life in a rural
Greek village, and making new friends with participants from throughout the
U.S. and in their Greek community. Through the years, the American Farm
School has built a tradition of helping Greek villagers meet their evolving
needs through community service projects carried out by Greek Summer
participants. During Greek Summer, young Americans undergo their own
metamorphosis of thought and spirit as they work to accomplish set goals.
The intensity of the experience leads participants to realize new potential and
discover resources within themselves and each other.
Students who have completed grades 9 (and have had their 15th birthday by
June 20th), 10, 11 or 12, are eligible to apply. Applicants submit biographical
information, personal statement, school recommendation and medical report;
and are interviewed by a Greek Summer representative. A rolling admissions
policy is used, and early applications are strongly recommended.
