Claude Monet and Perspective

Oaklawn Art Lesson: Grade K


One 45-Minute Art Lesson
Art Teachers: Mekenzie Bisel, Taylor Gardner, Autumn Rockteschel

Enduring Understanding/Central Focus:


We will learn about Claude Monet and his bridge and water lilies painting
Along with this, the students will be able to understand the difference between near and far
(perspective)

WI State Art & Design Standards: Grade 4

I.4.1: Use art to understand how they feel
L.4.6 Understand that artists develop a personal style that reflects who they are

Materials:
● 8 ½ x 11 paper
● Watercolor
● Paint Brushes
● Painters Tape for edges of paper
● Containers for water

Objective/Purpose/Focus/Goal:
Art History: I can look at Monet’s paintings and pictures of waterlilies and use them as
resources for my own painting (C.4.5)

Art Production: I can understand the wet on wet technique to understand how a
personal style reflects the artist (L.4.6)
Art Criticism: I can use the art I create to understand how the artist feels (I.4.1)

1) What do you want your students to be able to do/learn?


● The students will observe Claude Monet’s painting The Water Lily Pond.
● The students will learn how to paint using the wet on wet technique with
watercolors in a similar style to the painting.

2) What is the overall central focus of their learning/doing?


● Big is near, Small is far.
● Wet on wet technique
● Claude Monet

3) Relate central focus to a WI ART standard


● Know how to use nature and other works of art as inspiration

4) What essential questions will students need to answer in order to be able


to learn/do?
● The student will learn the wet on wet watercolor technique

5) What are the criteria for the learning segment/lesson?


● If the student was able to use the wet on wet watercolor technique

Anticipatory Set:
● We will ask them if they have seen nature landscape
● Have you guys seen any landscape paintings before?
● Do you guys like landscapes?
● Well, today we are going to learn about Claude Monet and his paintings

ART History:
Claude Monet
Water Lily paintings

Instructional Input: PROCEDURE:


“Today, we are going to talk about a big word called perspective. To put it simply, we will talk
about things that are near and far”
We will also talk about an artist by the name of Claude Monet (show them The Water Lily Pond
along with other pictures from the book(s) we bring)
Demonstration of wet on wet painting technique, how to draw a bridge and water lily
Breaking up into 3 groups
Review of what we have learned so far (near and far, Claude Monet, painting technique)
Students will do their projects as teachers go around to check up one everyone and help if
needed
Clean up at end
What did everyone learn? What was your favorite part?
Modeling:
● We will show students our project samples
● We will show Monet Water Lily Painting
● We will show them the wet on wet watercolor technique
● We will demonstrate how to draw the bridge
Check for Understanding:
1)How will you know your students have learned?
● If they understand how to do wet on wet technique
● If they understand big is near, small is far
2)What activities will you use to check for understanding?
● Drawing the bridge
● Drawing the size of the lilies

Guided Practice:
1)What activities will students perform for practice?
● How to draw the bridge with curve
● How to draw lilies small and big

Independent Practice:
1)Student proceeds to know and be able to do on their own.
● Students will be able to use technique taught (wet on wet watercolor) and use that to
create their own piece
● Students will be able to make a bridge over a pond of waterlilies compared to project
samples and inspiration from Claude Monet’s painting
● Students will be able to understand perspective (near and far) while making their piece
