• Call 1: “Membrane Technologies”

Project 1-002
ECOMBR
“Wastewater Reclamation through Low-Energy MBR Technology”

Executive Summary
Wastewater reuse is presented as an alternative water resource, whose implementation will allow
diminishing water scarcity in the future. This project aims at developing and demonstrating the
feasibility of a novel European membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology, designed with low
environmental footprint and backflush functionality at high pressure, for wastewater reclamation.
The consortium, formed by Agfa (membrane producer) and Agbar (end user) will allow orienting
the technology design towards its final application in real water reuse scenarios.

Project 1-005
MicroDisc
“MicroDisc technology: a new solution between microfiltration and microscreen to remove
parasites and turbidity for water reuse and drinking water production”

Executive summary
For applications such as tertiary water treatment, water reuse but also drinking water production,
there is a specific market need for separation technologies in the microfiltration range 1 to 7 4m,
between the expensive and energy consuming micro- or ultrafiltration processes (< 0.2 4m pore
size for commercial technologies) and the broadly accepted microsieve discfilter (> 10 4m mesh
size) or sand filters (> 10-15 4m equivalent cut-off). The project aims at developing cost-effective
and low energy microsieve discfilter technologies for the cut-off range 1 to 7 4m.

membrane with high water permeability leading to a desalination process running at lower
pressure. The project team composed of Arkema, a materials supplier, Membrana GmbH, a
membrane manufacturer, Institut Européen des Membranes, a leading public research
organisation in the membrane field, and Veolia, a large design and operation company is the
balanced partnership to reach this objective. A successful outcome of this project would allow

Project 1-007
LEMEDIS
"Low Energy MEmbrane DIStillation"

Executive summary
The main objective of the LEMEDIS Project is to bring membrane distillation (MD) to a reliable

Project 2-002
NRW
“On Line Non Revenue Water Management”

Executive Summary
The recent evolution of both telecommunication solutions and battery technologies enables a
better management of water networks, and a huge amount of data is now collected through
Automatic Meter Reading systems, on-line leakage detection and district metering architectures.
Urged on by the business drivers to develop robust procedures for analysing and controlling Non
Revenue Water (NRW), industrial players now have in place a number of techniques for
understanding, measuring, monitoring and predicting losses within the distribution network.
Many approaches to the NRW issue have been developed in different parts of the world, some of
which being very innovative and successful. The project proposes to integrate existing and new
technologies such as including Automatic Meter Reading, leakage detection, performance models
and pressure modulation methods, into a modular toolbox, capable of addressing different levels
of water management requirements.

assess the system performance in a network distribution facility. The expected benefits for water
supply companies (treatment and distribution facilities) are clear and numerous regarding to
lower investment, decrease in the response time (early warning system) and increase the quality
management of current facilities.
