Infrared radiation (IR), or infrared light, is a
type of radiant energy that's invisible to
human eyes but that we can feel as heat.
All objects in the universe emit some level
of IR radiation, but two of the most obvious
sources are the sun and fire.
In 1800, William Herschel
conducted an experiment
measuring the difference in
temperature between the colors in
the visible spectrum. He placed
thermometers within each color of
the visible spectrum.

• Household uses
- Household appliances such as heat
lamps and toasters use IR radiation to transmit
- This includes TV remotes, DVD players,
projectors, etc. Infrared is often used to send
signals through fiber optic cables, particularly
when using standard silica fibers.

• It has response time faster than thermocouple.

• It provides good stability over time.

• No corrosion or oxidation can affect the

accuracy of infrared sensor.

• It delivers high repeatability.

• Infrared frequencies are affected by hard objects (e.g.
walls, doors) , smoke, dust, fog, sunlight etc. Hence it does
not work through walls or doors.

• Infrared waves at high power can damage eyes.

• In monitor & control application, it can control only one

device at one time. Moreover it is difficult to control things
which are not in LOS (Line of Sight). It requires line of sight
between transmitter and receiver to communicate.

• It supports shorter range and hence it performance

degrades with longer distances.

• It supports lower data rate transmission compare to wired
