Overall Lesson Objective:

I: Given nature documentary clip, class discussion, and teacher demonstrations, students will
create 4 snakes with various observed features of snakes discussed in class, apply patterns of their
choice using colored pencils, and create an environment for their snake using a construction paper
loom that has an applied sponge texture using tempera paint
II: Students will correctly and safely use glue sticks and scissors to cut out snakes from
sheet, correctly cut and prepare paper loom to fit the shape of their chosen landscape, weave their
paper snakes through loom, and mount final snakes and loom onto construction paper of their
choice
Daily Objectives:
-Watch Secret Nature: Facts About Snakes (1:00-4:40 & 4:50-6:00)
-Discuss clip and basics of drawing snakes

Introduction:
Students will start the class with a small table discussion answering one Students talk with table
question (1. What do you think about and know about snakes?) partner(s) [no more
Development: than 3]
Watch Secret Nature: Facts About Snakes from (1:00-4:40) and (4:50- Students will watch clip
6:00). Before starting students should be reminded of movie etiquette
(voices/comments off, laughing is ok, looking at the screen and
watching and not talking with your neighbor, sit in your seat and don’t
move)

Once clip is done, teacher will lead students through discussion and Students will
write key points on whiteboard participate in
1.Where do snakes live? (all over except poles) discussion
We as humans are able to live everywhere because we have the ability
to wear coats and more clothing.
2. Do all snakes look the same? How are they different?
Body, eyes, tails, pattern
3.What is pattern (something that repeats over and over, typically a
shape, color, line, or combination)

How to draw a snake

1. What are the basic body parts of a snake? (Head, Body, Tail, Eyes,
Tongue)
2. Do all snakes have the same of all of these (no, all snakes are
different)
Basic drawing [circle for head, then cylinder for body, the comes to
point for tail). Emphasize all snakes will and should look different,
just like they are.
Drawing Snakes
Paper is prefolded, each snake should fit from top to bottom to create
right proportion for loom, use pencil, draw a total of 4 snakes
(Have students repeat that back) Students will repeat
back expectations
Students will have representative from each table to get paper for their
table. Students will begin working on their own to draw 4 snakes with
pencil. Students will gather
around for
Once students start finishing pencil snakes, have students gather round demonstration
for colored pencil demonstration.
I. Reminder of what pattern is
II. Review Teacher example (identify pattern(s) present
III. Requirement in this lesson is to draw 4 snakes and apply 1 or more
patterns on your snakes (all patterns will be different just like you are,
just like the snake bodies are)
IV. Review procedure and use of colored pencils
V. How to use hand sharpener
Have students repeat back expectations (draw 4 snakes, at least one
pattern of your choice on each snake) Students will
Students will be released to continue to work on snakes and start using independently work on
colored pencils their snakes

Conclusion: Students will clean up

Students will clean up materials and put away snakes in box. Rock materials properly
paper scissors if time for line-up

Introduction:
1.What did we do last week? (drew snakes with patterns using colored Students will answer
pencils) review questions
2.We talked about where snakes live last time, lets name some specific
examples (desert, forest, grass, ocean)
Development:
Today we are going to start with making the landscape for our snakes to Students will gather
weave through so gather round! round for
Snakes live in lots of different places in the world, and here I have demonstration and
colored construction paper. (Have students guess what landscape they follow along written
think the color represents, brown for desert, blue for ocean, etc.) demo on whiteboard
I have my snakes, now I need to choose where my snakes live!
Emphasize all students will choose different landscapes.
Teacher will overview how to create texture on their paper loom using
sponge and tempera paint. Teacher will then demonstrate how to clean
sponge. (Demo Whiteboard image)
Give students expectation that when they are done with tempera paint
they should place it on the drying racks and then continue coloring
snakes.

Students will start with choosing paper loom color, then sharing trays for Students will create
tempera paint. Stress to students that this process should only take up to their paper loom with
5 minutes maximum then they should put paper on drying rack and work paint and put on
on finishing snakes. drying rack. Students
will then get their
As students finish snakes, gather in small groups for review of proper snakes and colored
scissors use (pick a size that fits the hand, not to use just the tip but entire pencils and continue
hand, stress taking time at this step because once it’s cut it’s harder to to work on the snakes
fix, they should only cut their own snakes)

Students will continue to work independently. As students finish snakes Students will gather
and looms are dry enough (tempera paint should only take 5-10 minutes) round for loom demo
have students gather round for a loom demo.
I. With pencil, draw line at the halfway mark, then two lines of equal size
on either side
II. Cut with scissors along lines, do NOT cut all the way through
III. Add on “feature lines”
Students should be reminded that snakes should be done by the end of
class.

Students will return to work independently on snakes and looms.

Conclusion:
Students will clean up their materials and place in box for storage. Rock Students will clean up

and snakes. and answer
Demonstration: questions.
I. What you need (cut and prepared loom, 4 snakes, gluestick, and colored
paper of student choice)
II. Gluestick demonstration and expectations (take off cap, only roll a bit
down, glue the bottom uncut portion of loom)
III. Mounting on colored paper [place squarely on page (if student has
horizontal loom, paper should be horizontal, if student has vertical loom
paper should be vertical), smooth bottom glued portion)
IV. Weave snakes through loom and place in desired positions
V. Glue edges of snakes/loom
VI. Sign your name in bottom right corner

Students will be released to work on finishing the loom and begin Students will have
