Introduction
Principles in the teaching and learning process is very important. It will help the teacher for having
good teaching and learning process. We can imagine how confused we are if there are no principles in
the teaching and learning process, but nowadays most of them only giving a little change in format
and presentation with no changes in the selection of what material that should be taught or in how it
might be monitored and assessed. It happened because of an unwillingness to look at what is already
known and to apply it to curriculum design without being distracted by the need to follow the method,
not because of the absence of suitable research and theory. So, principle is such a method approach to
curriculum design to result in some aspects of curriculum design being well thought. Here, I would
like to explain about the principle of English for tourism at English Education Department of UMY.
The aim of this article is to decide how learning can be encouraged. While, the purpose of this article
is to show that a sensible basis to guide teaching and help in designing a course on the following
principles. The principles should be based on the theory and research. The principle has been divided
into 3 groups, they are content and sequencing, format and presentation, also monitoring and
assessing.
The Principles Used at English Education Department of UMY
As we know that principles have been divided into 3 groups, here are the explanation of them.
Content and Sequencing
In the content and sequencing, it concerned with what goes into a language course and the order in
which language items that appear into the course. The aim of this principle is to make sure that the
learners are gaining something useful from the course. Most courses do not have a sensible selection
of frequent items. Based on Berlitz (1889) the selection of items seems to be opportunistic and
traditional rather than principled and with a concern for frequency of occurrence. In English for
tourism, the principle that my lecturer used are completely good. The lesson is keep moving forward
because she taught the learners to learn from the easiest one to the complex one.
Format and Presentation
In the format and presentation, it concerned with what will be happen in the classroom and during the
learning. It states to the kind of activities used in the course and the ways learners process the course
material. In the format and presentation one of the several items that underlie this subtitle is fluency.
According to Ellis (1987) sees fluency activities as a way of making features of learners’ careful style
of language use become available in other less monitored styles.
In English for tourism, my lecturer always gives a motivation for us to gain our interesting. She
always tells us about their experience, also she always asked us to do her tasks which is most of them
are using technology, so that it automatically increases our interest and motivation. It also taught us to
be fluent in speaking English especially for tourism. This kind of speaking assessment can increase
learners’ confidence to speak fluently.
Monitoring and Assessing
In the monitoring and assessing, students should get helpful feedback which will allow them to
improve the quality of their language use.
In English for tourism, for assessing speaking skill my lecturer gave us an assessment to do a role play
in front of the class which we have to decide the topic by ourselves. While, the final project of this
course was made a travel agency’s poster individually. My lecturer also gave us a feedback in every
assignment that she gave both in e-learning or direct feedback. Franken (1987) stated that feedback
about the process communication can bring about valuable improvement in formal speaking and in
writing. Chandler (2003) also stated that the learners are required to do something with the feedback
they receive.
Conclusion
As we know that principle is a tool to help the teacher on designing a course. The principles have
been divided 3 groups they are content and sequencing, format and presentation, also monitoring and
assessing. The principle of English for tourism at English education department of UMY was very
good. It has already included all of the principle’s elements. In the content and sequencing, the
lecturer has included all of the element one of them is that it is keep moving forward which she gave
the materials from the easiest one to the complex one. Then, in the format and presentation, she has
been doing well, such as she always gave us motivation also, she tried to develop our speaking skill in
this class. While for the monitoring and assessing, she always appreciates student who are active on
classroom participation, gave an appropriate assessment to her students, and gave us a feedback in
every assignment that she gave both in e-learning or direct feedback. From here we know that the
principles are important to the teaching and learning process to make sure that the learning process
can run well and the student can take the advantage of the course.
