Journal Reflection #1

For my project topic, I decided to choose Sexual Assault and Violence on college campus. I felt that this
topic was important with the #metoo movement is currently a hot national topic. I have personally seen
victims of sexual assault and I believe that this is an issue that is needed to see attention at all societal
levels. While the times are changing, we are beginning to recognize male victims of sexual assault and
assault towards the LGBTQA community. Where in times before there are little to no support for these
minority groups. I would like to focus on the campus here at the university of Idaho because I believe
that we as a campus community can truly make an impact and change the stigma that comes with
sexual assault. I know I can’t stop sexual assault from occurring, but I hope to be able to bring the
discussion to the table where victims, allies, and those curious can come to anyone in the campus and
be heard and treated in a non-judgmental way.

Journal Reflection #2

Since I decided to focus on the University of Idaho, I needed to obtain data that was specific with our
school and surrounding community. Its difficult trying to locate accurate and up-to date information
regarding sexual assault and violence data. This also led me to believe that this is something we need to
implement in our local communities so that we know of how serious this issue is and how we can
improve as a community to educate and lower occurrences of sexual assault/violence.

I used the community commons website to gain more information about life expectancy, income,
poverty, disease. Etc. about the city of Moscow. The commons report was a great epidemiological
resource, but it was not very helpful revealing statistics and data regarding sexual assault and violence.

The NCHA, was a great resource for me to gather important data. It allowed us to receive data given
from students who attend UI, allowing me to gain an understanding on what topics we need to focus us
to reduce the occurrences of sexual assault and educate others. Something I thought was interesting,
was that many students had not received information about relationship violence or sexual assault. That
was freighting to me, I want to be able to implement education regarding healthy relationships,
definition of sexual assault, and bystander prevention to allow students to know what one can assist is
right or wrong and how someone who is a victim.
Journal Reflection #3

As I come close to the end of my project, I have been able to establish what are my strengths, and what
are my weaknesses.

Strengths -Data from actual students that attend UI. So we

understand beliefs and what factors at UI are
leading to these occurrences.
-support from campus community.
-programs that are already available on campus
that are related to sexual violence and
relationship violence.
Weaknesses -lack of data at the state and national level
- What could I do, as a student to make this topic
important?
- societal norms impact data and statistics
meaning the issue could be much worse than
what has been recording.
-lack of published scholarly articles regarding
what interventions were used to decrease
occurrences
Room for growth?

- How can we implement programs that are toward the education and prevention of sexual
assault here at the University of Idaho?
- Do we have the financial resources or any resources that could assist us on implementing these
interventions in our community?
- How are we going to make students & staff want to be a part of this, on their own free will?
Journal #4

I really enjoyed this project because we were able to choose a topic, we thought was important to us.
Breaking this project up and having our lessons being intertwined really allowed us to cement the
information in our minds. I am a hands-on learner and so this helped me a lot personally. This class was
also small numbered so that in turn allowed us to really have in-depth discussion. And we learned that
having discussion was vital to not only our projects but to our learning. When we talk about health
promotion it is not simple, collaboration with others is necessary because we need to gain perspective.
We were able to discuss individually about the progress of our projects and were able to receive
constructive criticism. One of my “aha” moments was when we would be discussing a complex topic
that wasn’t clear to me through words, the information would click when we were able to integrate the
topic into our projects. This class was the most hands on class, I’ve ever taken. That’s the best way for
me to understand the topic and retain the most information.

This class sparked interest of public health as a career choice, I really enjoyed everything this class had
to offer. I hope to further engage myself in the world of public health and work towards something
important to myself.
