WASTEWATER ENGINEERING DESIGN

SEMESTER 1 2019/2020
GROUP PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

1. Form a group of 3.

2. Find a site plan of any development area (such as housing area, school, university, etc.)
and construct a problem definition that suits your plan.

Example of Problem statement

A new campus of UTHM is to be built in 11th Malaysian Plan and the development of the
new campus will continue well beyond the 11th Malaysian Plan. The number of students
projected in the year of 2030 is 30,000 with 3,000 academic staffs and 2,500 supporting
staffs. Therefore, you are required to design the wastewater treatment facilities, which will
cater for the wastewater expected to be produced by the year 2030 in campus.

Assume that you are working with your team to provide the detailed design for the
wastewater treatment facilities. However, as junior civil engineers in your company, you are
only required to design up to secondary wastewater treatment while the sludge treatment
facilities will be designed by the senior engineers.

You are required to design the following wastewater treatment units:

1) Bar screen
2) Balancing tank
3) Grit removal facility
4) Primary sedimentation tank
5) Secondary treatment (Activated sludge reactor/ trickling filter/rotating biological contactor)

3. Design consideration should include the following criteria:

 BOD5 less or equal to 20 mg/L or 85%.
 Total suspended solids is less or equal to 25 mg/L.

1
4. You can make your own assumptions in your design. However, you need to ensure that
your calculations should always meet the criteria (allowable values) stated in the Malaysian
standards (MS 1228) and other related Malaysian guidelines (e.g. Guidelines for
developers - Sewage Treatment Plants etc.).

5. Calculation steps for each treatment unit: You can refer to Wastewater treatment
Concepts and design approach (G. L. Karia & R. A. Christian) or other relevant
references.

Report format:
1) Your report must be typed using Arial (12 font size) and 1.5 spacing.
2) Must be printed on standard A4 paper with 2.5 cm margin for left and right of the paper.
3) The number of page should not exceed 30 pages (not include the front page, table of
contents, and appendix - if any).
4) Please insert page numbers at the right bottom of the page.
5) Full report should be comb binding.

Report Contents:
1) Front page (as per attached) – Please print it on YELLOW color paper.
2) Table of contents
3) Group Profile (Name, Individual Photo and List of specific tasks completed by individual)
Example
Name Photo Specific tasks
Harry Potter 1) Dealt with developer X to get the site plan.
2) Designed the bar screen and balancing tank.

Ron 1) Designed the grit chamber.

Presentation:
1) Make power point slides complete with the recorded audio and image. Then you need to
SAVE the recorded presentation in MPEG-4 Video and burn it into the CD. You need to
compile the CD with your report OR Oral presentation at lecturer’s office.
2) Presentation should use formal language (English) and clear.
3) Presentation duration should not exceed 15 minutes.

3
4) You also can produce the video of your presentation using Powtoon and so on. Use your
own creativity.

Note:
Please submit your full report + CD by 19th Dec 2019 (Thursday) before 3.30 pm.
