Expression Project Reflection

During the feedback process of this project, I received feedback from Zach Solomon. He
mentioned that my topic and form of expression was interesting and worked well for the topic.
He liked that I decided to do an illustration for my medium because he thought that would be a
good way of explaining how I viewed the concept of art and technology in the future. One
critique that he mentioned though with the current state of my work at that time was that there
were no words describing what each illustration was. He said that this might lead to wrong
interpretations and might cause confusion so, by adding titles and descriptions to the side, it
might help the viewer understand the concept of my visual essay better.

His critiques were very helpful and reasonable to fix. I took the critique of adding words
to the illustrations and decided to put in some titles to help with the layout and understanding. I
also took the note to make everything a bit more organized, so I added some shapes and lines as
well to separate each illustration on the page. These notes were very helpful and helped with
improving the overall final product.

What I learned from doing this project was that it is beneficial to create something in a
medium that you enjoy. For me, the idea of working in the format of illustrations in a visual
essay was exciting. This then made the project a lot easier to do and I ended up finishing earlier
than any of the previous projects. Since I chose to do a visual essay for my medium though, I had
to do a lot of planning and “story boarding” to help figure out what needs to be illustrated and
how everything needs to be placed. This way of working was very helpful and beneficial for me
so if done again, I would keep this style of working and organization for this project. What I also
would not change was the medium I chose. Drawing illustrations was definitely the choice that
suited me the best with my field of study in art.

What I might do differently would be to add more descriptions on the actual visual essay.
I went a lot in detail in the project plan paper, but I think that there was not enough explaining on
the actual project. By adding small summaries underneath each title, then it might have helped in
people trying to understand what I was showing in the illustrations. More illustrations might
have been more helpful in explaining the point as well if done again.

For this project, I mainly focused on the future technology of AR in creating art. I
focused a lot on creating and displaying digitally painted 3d sculptures that can be walked
around and looked at in any direction. What might be interesting to do with this technology
though that I did not consider previously would be to create a 3d moving sculpture with AR. I
only focused on static digital sculptures with this project but with the introduction to some sort of
stop motion drawing with augmented reality, this could make that same piece of art so much
more interesting. Instead of looking at a still sculpture, this use of AR and stop motion could

create a moving piece of art that people can walk around and look at. It would be similar to
watching movies with 3d glasses but also being able to walk around in that created environment
and seeing everything move and change right in front of you.

Another use not initially considered would be to use this AR and art combination in jobs.
Architects could create a blueprint of a house digitally with AR and then let the buyers of the
house look at the preliminary result before any actual work is done on the project. It would be
very beneficial for other artists like landscapers and interior designers too to use in trying to
figure out a certain layout that they want before they actually start the project. By using tools
similar to the brushes I made for this project, they could use some form of pen tool to draw their
thoughts and ideas in a 3d digital space.
