Laguna Beach Unified
550 Blumont Street
Laguna Beach, CA 92651

Dear Jennifer deEncio:

My name is Nathan McConnell and I am interested in applying for the Instructional Assistant, Special
Education position available in the Laguna Beach Unified school district. I heard about the opening from a
family member. My mother actually works in the district and told me that this would be a great fit for
someone interested in becoming a teacher. I believe I am a good match for this position because I want to
become a certified teacher someday, I have a lot of experience working with kids, and I am able to
tolerate and adapt to any situation.

I am an education major that would someday love to have a classroom I can call my own. I am not
certified yet, but I think exposing myself to many different aspects of the education system will help me
become a better teacher in the long run. Special education is important to me because I believe that every
kid has the right to grow and learn in a comfortable setting. I had a few teachers that made a huge impact
on me while I was growing up. They were an adult figure in my life that I could really trust, and I knew
they only wanted the best for me. I want to have that kind of impact on the children that I am teaching.

I have been working with kids most of my life. I was a counselor at a summer camp while attending my
first university, I coached water polo to ages 8-18, and I ran the junior lifeguard program while I was a
beach lifeguard. Working with kids gives me so much joy because they are energetic and eager to learn.
They keep me on my toes, which I like so things do not get too boring. Even when I was growing up, I
tended to hang out with kids that were younger than me, but I liked it because I could help them learn
new things. Working with kids and helping them learn is something that I am very passionate about.

Working with special needs students can be a very difficult task. It requires a lot of patience and
perseverance. I am someone that can tolerate even the most uncomfortable situations and I am quick to
act in an effort to dissolve any issues. I would accept this challenge head on. Even if I made mistakes in
the beginning, I know it would help me learn and grow as an educator.

I want to thank you again for your time and for giving me the opportunity to apply for such an amazing
job. I really think I would be able to have a positive impact right away and the knowledge and skills that I
will gain can help me reach my goal of becoming a certified teacher. I would love to come in for an
interview and get a better understanding of the position. I have provided my phone number and email at
the top of this letter. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Thanks again for your time and hope to
hear back from you soon.

Sincerely,

Nathan McConnell
