INTRODUCTION

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Parental Involvement in their children’s academic life is always

significant. It is the attentiveness and participation of parents in their children’s

educational activities and performances. Mahsa (2016) asserted that parental

involvement is a very essential variable that can greatly affect children’s

education positively or negatively. Without this active moral and physical

support of parents to their children, the students’ enthusiasm for learning and

studying is discouraged. Research findings suggested that parents’ attitudes,

along with their behavior and activities with regard to their children’s

education, do affect academic achievement in a positive way (Hui-Chen

Huang and Mason, 2008).

It is widely recognized that if pupils are to maximize their potential from

schooling the will need the full support of their parents. Attempts to enhance

parental involvement in education occupy governments, administrators,

educators, and parents organizations across North America, Australasia,

Continental Europe, Scandinavia, and the UK. It is anticipated that parents

should play a role not only in the promotion of their own children's

achievement but more broadly in school improvement and democratization of

school governance ( Charles and Alberto,2003). The European Commission,

for example, holds that the degree of parental participation is a significant

indicator of the quality of schooling.

According to Nierva (2009), parent involvement in the Philippines is

vague because there is still a need to improve parent involvement practices,

especially those promoting the parents’ active involvement in the child’s

learning at home and in school. Much of the practices of Filipino are brought

about by history including the ways parents race their children. The

Philippines are facing different problems that cause and greatly affect families.

Although Filipino parents across all social class levels typically regard

education as essential to their children's success and are willing to go to great

lengths to help their children through school, retention is a major concern in

Philippine school, as many students do not continue past their elementary

grades (Blair, 2014).

For this purpose, this study wanted to examine the causes and reasons

pertaining to the lack of concern and involvements of the parents to their

children’s education and to state the importance and positive impact of the

parent’s involvement to student’s participation in school.

The Effect of Parental Over-involvement on Educational Attainment

Parental involvement has been shown to be a very important variable

that positively or negatively influences children's education. Lack of

involvement or over-involvement may have a negative impact on student's

performance in and out of the classroom and ultimately affects their

educational development and success. This Research was conducted to

determine whether or not teacher-initiated, regular communication with

parents makes an impact on parent's over-involvement. The researcher's goal

was to communicate with parents in their native language about school

activities. There was a significant improvement in the rate of parent's

consciousness about the negative effects of over-involvement.

Relationship between Parental Involvement and Secondary School

Students' Academic Achievement

This paper reviews the research literature on the relationship between

parental involvement (PI) and academic achievement, with special focus on

the secondary school (middle and high school) level. The results first present

how individual PI variables correlate with academic achievement and then

move to more complex analyses of multiple variables on the general construct

described in the literature. Several PI variables with correlations to academic

achievement show promise: (a) communication between children and parents

about school activities and plans, (b) parents holding high

expectations/aspirations for their children's schooling, and (c) parents

employing an authoritative parenting style. We end the results section by

discussing the findings in light of the limitations of nonexperimental research

and the different effects of children's versus parents' perspectives on

academic achievement.

Causes of poor parental involvement in education activities

Poor parental involvement in schools and educational activities at basic

education level is a concern the world over. Governments have promulgated

deliberate educational policies to institute parental involvement through

structures commonly known as Parents and Teachers Associations (PTA).

Despite this structural approach, many countries including Botswana,

experience poor parental involvement in a school located in a low-income

township area in Gaborone – Botswana. The study confirms that there is a

lack of effective parental involvement in that school. One of the major

challenges is that school activities and meetings are often held when the

majority of the parents are at work. It, therefore, recommended that PTA

activities be held at a time that suits specific activities and tasks and that

teachers must be encouraged to visit their children’s homes to dialogue with

parents on educational issues in order to inspire parents to participate in the

education of their children.

Parent Involvement Revisited: Background, Theories, and Models.

Parent involvement in young children’s education has many aspects.

Parents are considered to be the most important primary role models in their

young children’s immediate surroundings. Assuring their children’s academic

achievement and success in school is one of the most important aspirations of

every parent in many cultures. This understanding requires analysis of the full

process of parent involvement in order to obtain a better picture of it and

provide a solid basis for academic discussion in this regard. Therefore, the

purpose of this study was to provide an overview of parent involvement in

young children’s education. Specifically, this study sought to explore: (1)

historical background of parent involvement in the United States and Turkey,

(2) major development theories in relation with parent involvement, and (3)

main contemporary parent involvement models.

"Parental Involvement", a term researchers use to describe the interest

family takes in a child's education, is of special interest to educators who

encourage parents to help kids at home with homework and projects. School

districts also focus on methods to encourage parents to view the school as an

important part of family life as children grow. Theories on parent involvement

explore the links between family and school interaction and attempt to identify

the reasons for high and low parent participation.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the major causes pertaining to the lack

of participation of the parents to their children’s co-curricular and extra-

curricular activities in school.

This study answered these specific questions:

1. What is the level of parental involvement of students co-curricular and

extra-curricular activities in BCSAT?

2. What is the importance of parental involvement to students participation in

co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in school?

3. What is the intervention plan to be implemented to improve the parental

involvement towards student’s participation in school?

Significance of the Study

The object of this study is to identify the factors of lack of parental

involvement in their children's academic activities on Grade 8 Section Yakal in

Butuan City School of Arts and Trades.

This study can benefit the following:

Students. They are the main beneficiaries of this research. They will

receive full support from their parents in terms of their education which can

improve their academic achievements.

Parents. They will be able to give more attention to their children and

five necessary support to their child's academic performance.

Future Researchers. They can use this research as study reference

or guide for their future studies.
