Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Parts of a Tree

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the parts of a tree.
Students will be able to collect data in an organized manner.
State Standards:
1-2.2. Illustrate the major structures of plants “trees”
Context: I am teaching this specific lesson, so that my students can get a deeper understanding
of the part6s of a tree. Before this unit we discussed the parts of a plant. The previous knowledge
the students would be bringing into the lesson is a book we read about that was based on water,
soil, sunlight, and other resources that plants require in order to grow. They will have prior
knowledge on all the factors that play a role in tree development. For example, water, soil,
sunlight, and other key factors. After this lesson, students will be taking a quiz on what they
have learned. To prepare students for this, I will be presenting a lesson on the parts of a tree.
Data: There would be a higher group, a medium group with a mixture of the higher group, and a
lower group. The lower group would help me focused on their needs and incomprehension of
what they know about the parts of a tree prior to the lesson. These groupings would be based on
the students' quiz before being introduced to the topic “comprehension quiz”, which was taken to
see their stance on the topic. The group who has at least 60% of the quiz corrected would be the
highest group, and the group with at least 50% will be grouped with some of the kids who are
higher level, and the group with at least 40 % correct will be the middle group and anything
under 40 % will be my lower group. Also, there will be a quiz that will be taken a day before the
introduction of parts of a tree.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)
Introduction: Smart board, different color tree stickers, different color smiley face stickers,
parts of a tree PowerPoint
Teacher Directed: YouTube video of parts of a tree for my visual learners.

Procedures:
Introduction (30 minutes): First and foremost, students will enter the classroom, put away
their belongings, and find their seats. I will first begin with an icebreaker, that is relatable to my
lesson. I will ask students to look on their desk and to see if they see a smiley face sticker. Once
they answer yes, I will ask them to find the students who have the same color smiley face sticker
as them. I will give them two minutes to do so. Once two minutes up I will say Hocus-Pocus and
they will respond everybody “focus”. Which be a transition and a way for them to know that I
need their undivided attention. Then I will ask them to go around in their group and let each
person give one fact that they know about trees. If they don’t know anything, they can just state
that they do not know. This will take 5 minutes. Then I will ring my bell which means for them
to be quiet, and I will ask them to quietly go back to their seats. Once they are at their seats I will
then introduce the topic by stating the objectives. Afterwards, I will give them a brief lesson
using my parts of a plant PowerPoint, which will take about 15 minutes. I will then explain each
of the stations. Then I will ask them to look and see if they have a tree sticker on their desk and
then we’ll go through the same process of them finding the students who have the same color as
them and using their transition words. In which this will take about 2 minutes. After I have their
undivided attention, I will then explain to them each of the 3 stations and what they are expected
to do. I will also explain to them which color tree goes where and then I will release them. These
3 steps would take a total of 6 minutes. I almost forgot to mention, their tree color is based on
what they made on their previous quiz on the day before the lesson which was on the parts of a
tree. They are grouped based on their scores.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): Before I start, with my lower group I am going to try my
best to target their needs during this time by taking a few minutes and going over the questions
they got missing on their quiz. During this time, I will ask students questions about or previous
lesson on what do trees need to grow. Afterwards I will ask them the question what are
somethings you all already know about based on the parts of a tree? I will let them go around
answering the question. Then, we will use a Post-It super sticky easel pad and a marker to write
those thoughts down. We will label it this part of the sticky pad “what we know”. The next label
we will be adding to our sticky note pad is “what we have learned”. This will be based on the
video parts of a tree. Once we discuss what they have learned and after jotting the information
down under its category, we will discuss what are more things they want to learn about the parts
of a tree. Which we label this part “Additional things we would like to learn”. I will use the same
color marker that correlates with their group sticker color. Once our 15 minutes are up, I will ask
each group to stop what they are doing and clean. Once cleaning up is over with, we will rotate
groups.

Collaborative ( 15 minutes): During this time children will be working with groups to
help master what I am asking for. Each group will be assigned an assignment: My mixture of my
highest and middle level group will create a song that associates with the parts of a plant (I will
provide them with examples in which they can use as guidelines), my middle level group will be
drawing the parts of the tree using markers and Post-It super sticky easel pad. My lower level
group will use my middle level group tree drawing to label the parts of a tree. My lower group
will also use a sticky pad and marker to list facts that they learned from the previous video and
their quiz, it’s a way to help them reinforce what they have just learned. This will help them to
retain the information. I will give each group 15 minutes and once their 15 minutes are up, I will
ring my bell ask them to clean up quietly, and switch stations.

Independent Digital (20 minutes): Here I will have a paper with a list of instructions of
what I want them to do and along with my school email. Using their iPads children will open the
Microsoft OneNote app, which should already be downloaded to their computer. This app allows
students to sketch, draw, and write out their thoughts. It also allows them to share it with
someone through via email. Students will pick the part of a tree they like the most, then they will
do additional research on that part of the plant. This additional research will be a maximum of 5
fun facts they find to be interesting. Then students will sketch out that part of the plant to the best
of their ability and once they are done they will share it with me. This should take about 20
minutes. Students will their iPad to set a timer. If they are done before 20 minutes, they will
quietly return to their seats and takeout a book waiting for further instructions.

Closure (20 minutes): Once my students have settled down from their last station, I will
introduce a game of Kahoot. This game will help me determine where each of student stands at
with my lesson. I will ask students to take out their assigned iPads and bring up the Kahoot
website. Since we often use Kahoot, I do not have to explain the procedures of the game. This
will take an estimate of 5 minutes. Once Kahoot is over with, I will let each group present their
collaborate group assignment. This should take about 6 minutes, because it is 2 minutes per
group. Once each group has presented their information, I will pass out their homework. Once I
am done with passing out their homework, I will pass out treats to all the children who were
behaving. I will ask all children to take a book and read quietly. That concludes my lesson.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= Kahoot)
I chose this piece of multimedia, because it can be used to help me determine where each one of
my students stands at. It could also help me determine my students’ level of comprehension of
my lesson and rather I should alter my children groups. This piece of multimedia supports my
student learning, because it gives me as a teacher the idea of my class as a whole understanding
of the lesson and also as individuals. With information it could help me capture my students’
needs. It supports my students’ standards and learning objectives, because it used to review
everything we had learned earlier that, basically it is used as a review. I know that it is of high-
quality, because I have used this form of media before and it helped drastically increased my
students’ learning levels. The multimedia choice differentiate instruction for all learners, because
it caters and meets the four sensory modalities in Fleming's model. The models as listed are:
visual learning, auditory learning, and physical learning.
Content quality: This app is definitely easy to use
Learning goal alignment: it improves instructional alignment between teaching and test scores
as I have mentioned before, by providing me with where children stand at in terms of their
comprehension of the lesson.
Feedback and adaptation: It absolutely give feedback in terms of the correct answer and it also
tells me the different percentages of each option that was selected. For example, if 100% of the
class selects the correct answer choice then it will tell me that.
Motivation: It is most definitely motivational. It challenges my students to get the answer
correct so that they can be in first place. After answering a question and reveal the answer, it
always has the top 5 and who is in what place. For example, 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and
so on. It also tells them if they got it wrong or it they answered to fast.
Presentation design: The presentation of this design has good quality. Everything is relevant to
my lesson.
Interaction Usability: It is an interactive app/website. As I have mentioned before, the
instructions are clear and it is for my students to navigate without a confusion.
Reusability: This app can be used in multiple texts it provides various options to help target
students different learning skills.
Standard: This app adheres to all relevant standards and specifications and has metadata that is
available to users, by mastering and challenging my student’s comprehension of the lesson itself.
(Multimedia 2= Parts of a tree YouTube video)
I chose this piece of topic really for my visual learners. To make sure they can visually
understand the conception of the lesson. It supports my standards, because it is basically about
labeling the parts of the trees. It is telling the students each and everyone of the departments of a
tree.
Content quality: This piece of media has good quality, because its emphasis the main key point
of my standards. Which are the structures of trees. It shows the parts and label the parts of a tree.
As for the content of it, I must say it is valid.
Learning goal alignment: it most definitely aligned with the goal/objectives for my lesson.
Which are identifying the parts of a tree and collecting data. This video is very informative, the
information itself is sufficient for my students to collect and retain data based on their
observation of the video.
Feedback adaptation: Although, the video is very informative, it does not give students specific
feedback. I guess if I put forth the consideration of the video answering questions that students
could possibly have could be a form of feedback.
Motivation: As for motivation, it could possibly be a type of motivation. It is able to attract and
maintain students learning. It is an interesting video that presents the information they know. It
motivates them or give them the urge to want to know more and to pay attention. Especially for
the children who hate PowerPoint based lessons.
Presentation Design: It is a YouTube video, that is presenting important information to its
aiming audience which would be anyone who wants to learn about the parts of a tree. Like my
second-grade students who is needing to learn this topic. All the information is clear and precise.
Interaction usability: This form of media doesn’t have a system responsiveness, but all the
information and content portrayals clarity.
Reusability: This website by itself just focuses on visual learners’ needs. The only negative
thing about it is that it doesn’t achieve all of the audience’s needs.
Standards compliance: This app adheres to all relevant standards and specifications and has
metadata that is available to users. It happens by mastering basically reteaching information from
my PowerPoint, but in a visual manner.
