Learning Objective Force, Motion, and Energy 1.2 c

The objective of the lesson is what
students will be able to do as they
finish the activity. For this objective, 1.2 (c) - The student will investigate and understand

get a basic understanding on gravity and how that effects push
and pull. We will also play with the concept of balance and
weight and go over the relationship of mass and weight. Tying
the concept to the forces of push and pull, using gravity and
mass is a nice way to tie the lesson together.

On the smart board we will read some concepts and talk about
push and pull. The students will participate in a dragging activity
in which they identify some pictures with actions on them and
see what they would be doing in those pictures. What force are
they using? Push or Pull? They will then drag the objects to the
wagons below that are labeled “push” and “pull”.
Next we will talk about the concept of mass and brainstorm
ideas on “How much of you are there?”. We will move on to the
concept of gravity and talk about the force of gravity, and the
force of pull.

We will have some more discussions on weight vs. mass and go

over why having more mass doesn’t mean taking up more
space. We will talk about how you measure your own weight on
scales and what is going on inside your scale when you step on

it. Are you pushing the springs or are you pulling the springs?
Have a discussion on what would happen to your weight on the
scale if you were pulling the springs vs. pushing the springs. The
students will move weights around on a scale and talk about
weight and gravity on the moon and on Earth and move objects
on the scales that show weight concepts of materials (rocks) on
the Earth and on the Moon. This will reinforce that the objects
maintained the same mass, however they did not maintain the
same weight, so when gravity wasn’t “pulling” on the objects
and compressing the springs in the scale, the objects that were
the same have different weights.
