History of Oakland University
● Oakland University was created in 1957 when Matilda Dodge Wilson and her
second husband, Alfred Wilson, donated their 1,443-acre (5.84 km2) estate to
Michigan State University, including Meadow Brook Hall, Sunset Terrace and all
the estate's other buildings and collections, along with $2 million.
Oakland University Description
● Oakland University is a student-centered, doctoral research institution with a
global perspective. A public institution.
● They do not have air conditioning in Freshman dorms.
● Oakland has a total undergraduate enrollment of 15,799, its setting is
suburban, and the campus size is 1,444 acres.
● They have a integrated resource center that can hold up to 40 people for
meetings, conference rooms that can hold 25 people, and The Shotwell
Gustafson Pavilion which is largely populated with client spaces, but can be
adapted to host a unique event in the center of the space.
● Oakland is a Co-ed campus.
Academics
● Majors Offered: Health Sciences, Communications, Human Resources,
Finance, Radiologic Technology, and Graphic designs are some examples.
● Oakland does have an honors college with dorms for those who attend.
● Oakland has a study abroad program, study abroad as early as the summer
semester after your freshman year, and as many times as you would like!
● There are many internships you can get with Oakland, they will help you in
the career service center, and you may start as early as Freshman year.
On Campus Activities
● Many sororities host fundraisers and events for anyone to attend.
● Oakland also hosts the “ Siblings Weekend” every year.
● Many concerts are held at Meadow Brook Hall, students get a discount.
● Oakland has 17 Sororities and Fraternities.
● I am very interested in joining a sorority
Surrounding Area Activities
● Oakland is located right on Meadow Brook Hall which hosts concerts
● Oakland is also near many fast food and restaurants like, Steak and Shake,
Mcdonalds, Tim Hortons, And Taco Bell.
● Oakland is also locates near Great Lakes Crossing
● A Grocery store near Oakland is Trader Joe's and Busch Gardens
● There is a movie theatre right in Great Lakes Crossing
Scholarships
● Oakland University has a scholarship called the “Legacy Scholarship” for
those who has family members who attended the University. You need at
least a High School GPA of 3.4+ and a 1130 on your SAT.
● They also have the Academic Recognition scholarship for those who have a
GPA of 3.4 or higher, the scholarship amounts go up the higher your GPA is.
Career Services
● The placement rate for my major, Nursing is almost 100%. Nursing is a field
you will always be able to find a job in.

connections for your future.”
Social Activities
● Oakland University has Greek Life, with 17 fraternities and sororities.
● Greek life volunteers at various events and hosts many activities and events.
● One sorority im very interested in is Alpha Delta Pi, they were the first
women's secret society, founded in 1851.
● They volunteer at the Ronald Mcdonald House and host many fundraisers.
● Greek life is something I am very interested in and look forward to.
On Campus Living
● Oakland has 8 different living residence halls.
● Housing is limited at Oakland.
● Hamlin, Vandenberg, Hill House, Van Wagoner, and Oakview (honors college)
are available for freshman for housing.
● There is a “no alcohol and drug policy on campus.”
● You have to re-apply after each semester
● You cannot bring your own loft, one is provided, along with basic furniture.
● To request to change your roomate you have to go to the housing office and
to switch places with someone else all other roomates have to agree.
