COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018 kicks
off today with a total of 1,602
companies from 30 countries
showcasing in some 5,015
booths their newest products and
technologies related to IoT, cloud
computing, smart mobility and
artificial intelligence-enabled services
as well as solutions.
The exhibition this year features
six state-of-art technology
themes: Artificial intelligence
(AI), 5G, Blockchain, Internet
of Things (IoT), Innovations &
Startups,”and “Gaming &VR,” as
part of COMPUTEX’s mission to
lead technological development
and realize the vision of building
a global technology ecosystem.

industry like Ericsson, Intel, Sigfox
and Qualcomm are to demonstrate
compelling technologies and open
a new page for the global telecom
industry during the five-day event,
which has continued to grow and
expand in scale in line with the ICT
industry.
As the development of blockchain
applications have become an
inevitable trend in global tech
industry, COMPUTEX 2018 has
decided to incorporate for the
first time blockchain into its
main themes, in the hope that
collaboration with leading players
home and abroad such as IBM,
Bitmark and Health2Sync can
expand opportunities for blockchain
technologies.
IBM, which launched a new
blockchain banking solution last
year, is to cite its own blockchain
experience and share application
cases in financial, healthcare, retail,
manufacturing, insurance and
management during the COMPUTEX
Forum’s “Future Trends” session
this year.
On the IoT theme, it includes
a special exhibit of SmarTEX
which demonstrates products in
seven categories, security, smart
healthcare, Internet of Vehicles,
smart wearable and e-sports
technologies, AI and big data, smart
tech solutions, and smart home and
entertainment, with key exhibitors
including Microsof, Intel, EDIMAX,
ECS, and Syscom Group.
The Innovations & Startups theme
includes the InnoVEX exhibit which
is to be held from June 6 to 8, with
388 startups from 21 countries
taking part in the event, up 10%
from 2017. Among these exhibitors,
up to 40% are international teams,
and one-third AI related. The section
also includes nine national pavilions:
EU, the Netherlands, Belgium,
France, Spain, Poland, Malaysia,
Mexico and Korea, triple than that
of 2017.
This year, two more sessions
(Workshop and Startup Tour) have
been added to InnoVex to bring
more momentum from local and
global startups in addition to the
existing elements of “Display, Demo,
Pitch and Forum.”
As Asia’s leading startup
platform, InnoVEX — into its third
edition this year — has attracted
local and worldwide high-potential
startups, organizations and teams
to participate in the annual event.
During the three-day show to be
held at the Taipei World Trade
Center Hall 3, participants have
the opportunity to exchange views
with startups from all over the world
through the forums provided by
InnoVEX.
InnoVEX Pi Stage offers a
platform for corporate and
exhibitors to showcase and
exchange ideas, at the same time
opening up more opportunities for
investing and incubating startups.
World-renowned accelerators and
startups, including Audi, Amazon
Launchap, JAFCO, Samsung Next,
TRIPLE and imec.epand, will talk
about their global plans and cross-
industry collaboration strategies
on Pi Stage at 11 am on June

Meanwhile, the gaming industry
is shifting its focus from enhancing
device specs and designs to building
a CX-centric Gaming 3.0 ecosystem,
where daily life meets cross-industry
applications, such as eSports bars,
hotels, and mobile phones, to
accommodate a more diversified
set of interests. Seventy local and
foreign exhibitors of hardware
components like motherboards,
PC cases, and cooling systems are
taking part in the five-day event.
During the two-day COMPUTEX
Forum, which begins today at the
Taipei International Convention
Center, a total of 15 global tech
giants and pioneers are to share
insights on AI ecosystem, technology
prospects, and IoT developments
centering on the “Ubiquitous
Intelligence” theme, enabling
attendees to envision the next
stages of tech innovation.

As innovative thinking is critical
for enterprises to break free
from constraints and expedite
transformation, COMPUTEX d&i
awards added three specialty
awards in the categories of “IoT”,
“Startups” and “Applications &
Solutions”— to promote cross-
segment integration and innovation.
Among a total of 212 applications
from 10 countries, 5 key criteria,
including “Innovation and
Elaboration”, “Functionality”,
“Aesthetics”, “Responsibility” and
“Positioning” were used to select
60 ground-breaking innovations.

on display during COMPUTEX 2018

AI to create 2.3 million jobs,
US$2.9 trillion in business
value by the early 2020s
Greater China region leads throughout 2017-2025; Asia-Pacific
emerges as the the fastest-growing region, going from 0.2% in
2017 to fourth overall with a total of 12.3% by the year 2030
AI promises to be the most disruptive
technology of the next 10 years due to advances
in computational power alongside the volume,
velocity and variety of data, as well as advances
in deep neural networks (DNNs). AI comes in
two forms — quantitative techniques that can
predict behavior from data and neural network
technology that can classify complex objects,
such as images, video, speech and sound.
Organizations using AI technologies can harness
data to both extract new insights and automate
processes that are uneconomical endeavors for
human labor to perform. Any industry with very
large amounts of data — so much that humans
cannot possibly analyze or understand it on
their own — can use AI. Some industries, such

as health care, are ripe for such disruption. AI
applications will bring new levels of customer
service, decision quality, scale and operational
efficiency to processes formerly operated by
human labor.
The growth in AI businesses’ value shows the
typical S-shaped curve pattern associated with
an emerging technology (Figure 1). In 2017,
the growth rate was estimated to be 70%, but
this growth will quickly drop to 39% in 2020.
After 2020, the curve will flatten, resulting in
a low growth rate of only 7% in 2025. The
value that employing AI will bring to businesses
comes from the following areas:
• Efficiency gains
• Creation of insights that personalize the
customer experience
• New automated processes that reduce friction
and improve business efficiency
AI systems will enhance customer engagement
and commerce, expand revenue-generating
opportunities, and enable new business models
driven by data insights.
Key points in the evolution of AI are as follows:
• By 2020, AI technologies will be entirely
pervasive in almost every new software
product and service.
• By 2020, AI will become a positive net job
motivator, creating 2.3 million jobs, while
only eliminating 1.8 million jobs.
• By 2021, AI augmentation will generate
US$2.9 trillion in business value and recover
6.2 billion hours of worker productivity.
• By 2022, more than 90% of AI technologies
in use in enterprises will be embedded in
broader products, rather than being assembled
or created from scratch by the enterprise
itself or its agents.
Business Value According to Geography
The Greater China region leads in business
value throughout the forecast period, although
only by a whisker until 2019. North America
accounts for a third of business value in
2018, dropping to a fifth by 2025 and finishing
the forecast period at 18.2% of the total
(Figure 2). Emerging Asia-Pacific is the fastest-
growing region, going from 0.2% in 2017
to fourth position at 12.3% by 2030. Both

Africa grow from less than 0.5% to 5% in the
same time frame. Decision support/
augmentation and decision automation
accelerate more quickly in market mature
regions where there is a significant level of
automation presence — this growth takes
longer to affect emerging regions.

based on bringing differentiated business
values to operations within a vertical
parameter. Therefore, there are only modest
fluctuations in the proportion of business
value from AI generated by each individual
industry.
The heavy industry sector leads from 2017
throughout the forecast period (Figure 3). The
transportation and construction organizations
are focused on becoming more data driven in

order to support their goals of growth, digital
transformation and profitability improvements.
The advance of the IoT will increase the amount
of data available, demanding new AI systems
that identify otherwise undetected patterns that
presage unexpected costs. These systems will
also enable predictive maintenance techniques,
which Gartner believes will save asset operators
about US$1 trillion a year. Agents will be the
main variety of AI in the early years, but by
2019 decision support/augmentation will be
the leading AI type for heavy industry. Minimal
uplift came from decision automation in 2017,
but by 2022 decision automation (particularly
in the form of predictive maintenance) will
have overtaken products in terms of generating
business value.
The communications, media and services’
business value from AI will dip by 2023 but
will peak by the end of the forecast period.
Agents will be the dominant type of AI in the
early years, but by 2025 the proportion of
AI types will stabilize, with decision support/
augmentation reaching 45% and a significant
proportion coming from decision automation
(18%). AI systems will enhance content by
performing indexing and classification that are
otherwise unavailable, encouraging consumers
to find and consume more content.
Natural resources and materials have long
used machine learning for exploring data
regarding extraction of resources and finding
new areas and new potential resources to
extract. DNNs can detect new opportunities
indicated by datasets that are not detectable
employing conventional processing techniques.
Mining and oil extraction are examples
of resources that will benefit from the superior
technology of DNNs to detect undiscovered
opportunities hidden in the large, diverse
areas in this industry. Decision support/
augmentation will be the top AI type from
2021 onward.
For the consumer products industry, the
proportion of the entire AI business value
will peak around 2023 and 2024. Adoption
of products such as smart home devices (e.g.,
Amazon Echo and Google Home), smart personal
care devices (e.g., toothbrushes) and smart
toys will become mainstream, with new
categories emerging (e.g., smart toiletries).
In terms of spatial experience, digital business
models are emerging that will blur the lines
between the digital and physical worlds.
Companies are leveraging IoT to connect people,
businesses and objects to drive revenue and
efficiency. AI applications create the leverage
necessary to enhance interactions with potential
customers.

Signing an MOU with TAITRA
Since the launch of the Taiwan
team, Amazon Global selling has
built a one-stop solution for Amazon
sellers by partnering with local
companies to help sellers with logistic
solution for inbound shipment to
Amazon Fulfillment Centers in the
United States and Japan. It has
also provided payment solutions
to facilitate seller’s operation flow
and hosted a series of seminars with
industrial associations to explore the
manufacturing strength of Taiwan’s
industry in stepping onto Amazon
marketplaces.
Last week, Amazon Global
Selling also signed a memorandum
of understanding (MOU) with
the Taiwan External Trade
Development Council (TAITRA)
for a joint effort to identify and
select enterprises of high quality
to help them launch export
business in Amazon global
marketplaces.
Under the MOU, Amazon will
provide enhanced services to the
selected companies, including
guidance regarding the on-boarding
process, account management
services, selling through Fulfillment
by Amazon, and enhanced
merchandising and promotion
services.
As part of the MOU deliverables,
the TA project (TAITRA/Amazon
project) aims to support small and
medium enterprises in Taiwan in the
information and communications
technology industry to expand their
businesses on Amazon.
For the first time, Amazon will also
take part in the 2018 COMPUTEX
in Taipei with Amazon Pavilion
presence (TICC, 3F, North Lounge)
to promote Amazon branding in
Taiwan.
In the new trading era represented
by cross-border online export, the
Global Selling Taiwan team is helping
different local sellers transform and
explore global business opportunities,
including manufacturers, brand
owners and start-ups.
For manufacturers, Amazon
provides supports to help them
embrace new trading models to
transform online practices, connect
directly with global customers and
build their own brands. For brand
owners and start-ups, they gain
access to customer insights in order
to build their own brand.
In addition to globally active
customers, B2B e-commerce business
represents another driving force
for manufacturing companies to
increase sales. Since its launch in
the United States in April 2015,
Amazon Business has now launched
on Amazon US, Germany, United
Kingdom, Japan and France and
serves more than 1 million business
customers around the world.
Global growth of 50% in 2017
Amazon has created a suite
of support tools to help smaller
businesses export their products
abroad, including providing global
delivery and distribution and
managing customer service in
local languages. Amazon also
translates hundreds of millions of
product listings each year on behalf
of smaller businesses, enabling them
to sell internationally with minimal
effort.
In a recent letter to Shareholder,
Amazon said the Global Selling
program grew by over 50% in
2017 and cross-border ecommerce
by SMBs now represents more than
25% of total third- party sales.

“My prime objective here is to

of having everything, software,
gateways, sensors -- or components
manufacturers,” he said.
One of the things he asks
companies that meet with him
is how easily they can offer pilot
projects and proof of concepts with
affordable costs, because this is their
main selling point.

potential customers, meet with
independent software vendors to
augment our ecosystem with more
solutions and get the vibe of the
industry in APEC and globally.”

AIは、コンピュータの計算力向上、デー
タの大容量化・高速度化・多様化、深層学
習の進歩により、今後10年間で最も革新的
な技術となります。 AIには過去のデータか
ら未来の動向を予測する数値解析技術と、
画像・映像・音声などの複雑なオブジェク
トを分類するニューラルネットワーク技
術の2つがあります。企業はAIを使用する
ことによって、データから新しい情報を獲
得したり、人的労働による非経済的な業務
を自動化したりできます。とりわけ人が分
析をできないほどのビッグデータを持つ業
界では、AIの影響力は大きなものとなりま
す。
