Lesson Plan: Art Fundamentals

Title: Repetition, Rhythm, and Pattern Grade Level: 11

The Big Idea (Overall Concept): Place & Environment

How/why do we assign meaning to particular places or environments? How can we use pattern
and design to enhance our work?

Description of Lesson (Brief Summary):

Students will immerse into the world of patterns. What do patterns mean and how can we use
them create layers of meaning? Place can be defined rather broadly. Somewhere tangible, a
memory, something fictional. For this lesson students will delve into a place that holds value to
them. They can create from memory and/or use reference photos to create a drawing or painting
(watercolor/gouache). Students must include pattern into various components of the work to
create an overall balanced composition. At the end students will write a brief creative narrative
(substitutes artist statement) about this place and why it is significant to them, this will be
followed by a brief critique.
