PROJECT PLAN

Expression Module
Victoria Lynde 11-14-19

Description
Despite new and upcoming technology, I believe that there will always be a place in the
workforce for translators because of the irreplaceable need for human interaction when it comes
to properly conveying context and meaning from one language to another.

Project medium (multimedia)

The project medium I have chosen for my project is an animated slideshow. I believe that
discussing the different ways in which technology is and will affect the field I plan to work in
would be best conveyed through a slideshow. Through this medium, talking about all the points I
wish to address will seem more concise as well as be more visually appealing.

Potential Benefits of multimedia

The benefits of presenting my information through an animated slideshow is that I can actively
engage the audience as well as make the information visually appealing. It also forces you to
present the information in a more concise and direct way as opposed to a more wordy form of
multimedia.

Potential challenges of multimedia

The challenges of working with an animated or interactive slideshow is that it only allows for so
much information to be presented per slide. When making it, you have to carefully plan what
you will and will not include in your presentation. It is also a far more time consuming way of
presenting information than other multimedia forms.

Artist statement
There are many benefits to technology in the workforce and translation is no exception to this.
Some benefits of technology in terms of translation are that programs like google translate make
basic translation more accessible to everyone. It can be helpful to people who are traveling to
different countries or businesses communicating with other business entities that may or may
not speak the same language. Although Google translate helps with convenience and simple
translation, often times the translations will be wrong or slightly off in the way that it is translated.
An example of this would be that some words in Japanese translate to something very specific
in a certain context, but when put into google translate translates into something entirely
different. In many languages, the way in which something is said or the implications that go
along with the way something is phrased makes it very hard or impossible for a translator app to
properly convert to another language without losing the original meaning. Because of instances
like this, I do not think that there will ever be a drop in demand for translators. Even with these
kinds of programs, there will almost always be some sort of cultural or language barrier and that
is really where a translators strengths should lie. In being able to effectively convey cultural
nuances and the different kinds of implications that certain words or phrases have, translators
secure the ways in which the business world need them. Although some see technology as a
means of replacing jobs like these, if anything they can be applied to speed up or improve the
quality of the work being provided. For example, simple translation applications are often used
in online business to quickly translate small documents between suppliers and consumers.
Being able to properly convey what you want to say as a business to your customers is an
important part of being successful which is something that these applications and translators
help with. Over all, I am not too concerned that translators will be run out of business because
of technology because I believe that there will always be some form of demand for human
interaction.
