CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background
The use of technology has become an important part of the learning process
in and out of the class. Every language class usually uses some form of
technology. In language teaching and learning, we have a lot to choose from the
world of technology: Radio, TV, CD Rom, Computers, C.A.L.L., the Internet,
Electronic Dictionary, Email, Blogs and Audio Cassettes, Power Point, Videos,
DVD’s or VCD’s. The last two decades have witnessed a revolution due to onset
of technology, and has changed the dynamics of various industries, and has also
influenced the industries and the way people interact and work in the society.
This rapid rising and development of information technology has offered a better
pattern to explore the new teaching model. As a result technology plays a very
important role in English teaching. Using multimedia to create a context to teach
English has its unique advantages. This paper tries to analyze the use of
technology to language teaching and also brings out the problems faced by using
these technologies. It also aims to make English teachers aware of the strategies
to use it in an effective manner.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. The Relation Between Technology and English Language Education

Technology related to the teaching and learning process is as an effective
and efficient media in the teaching and learning process. As a learning media,
technology, is associated with various activities that are used to access, collect,
manipulate, and offer or communicate information. The intended technology
includes equipment (such as computers, laptops, and other devices), software
and circuit applications (for example, internet, wifi, local networking
infrastructure and teleconverence). With the development of technology, the
teachers are dared to exploit it as a tool for giving course. The use of technology
as a learning medium will clearly make the teaching and learning process be
effective and efficient because it can facilitate a teacher in getting or conveying
information (messages or content, material), can help improve student
understanding, presentation of data/information more interesting or trusted,
facilitate interpretation of data, and obtain information. It can be said that
technology as a media is an important role as an effective and efficient tool in
the teaching and learning process.

B. The Use of Technology in Teaching English

Nowadays the use of technological resources has become a great help to
teach English; there are several kinds of these resources that teachers can use
in their classrooms. For this reason, teachers who incorporate the use of
technological resources in their classes must have a great ability to select and
to use them in a proper way, so that teaching process will be successful. In the
following lines different kinds of technological resources and methods to
incorporate in class will be described, in order to demonstrate some advantages
of their use to teach English. At the end, you will find some suggestions about
the use of technological resources in order to apply in your classes.
The use of technology has great advantages for teaching of English,
according to Pun (2013) technology offers different options to make teaching
interesting and more productive because it has ability to catch the attention of

3
language learners. Besides teachers can use several kinds of technological
resources for instance; in the form of films, radio, tv and tape recording in order
to improve teaching, also the use of audio, visual and animation effects in the
English language teaching classrooms. In this way students learn easier when
teachers use different kinds of technological resources, according to Motteram
(as cited in Pun, 2013) teachers can use technology to create more colorful and
stimulating English classes. Therefore, some of advantages of use of
technology in the English classes according to Pun (2013) are: motives students
to learn English, develops students’ communicative competence, enhances
Interaction among students and between teachers and students, provides
opportunities for English teaching outside the classrooms, improves teaching
efficiency and widens students' knowledge about the culture of English.
On the other hand it is necessary that teachers do a good selection among
different technological resources to teach because the success of the integration
of technology in class depends on this. In order to use technology effectively
for educational purposes, according to report to the Nellie Mae Education
Foundation (July, 2011) teachers must not only be familiar with how to operate
equipment, but also understand how these tools are effectively used in the
subjects they teach and how to incorporate resources into classroom activities,
that permit to achieve important outcomes in the students learning processes
taking into account their needs.
As for English teaching the use of technology can be used to improve it, in
concordance with this Basheer (2013) supports that each technological tool has
its specific benefits with each language skills (speaking, listening, reading and
writing). However, in order to use these techniques successfully, students
should be familiar with using computers and internet and be able to interact
with them. Despite most teachers have some familiarity with technology base
on computer and they are able to use them, many teachers do not know how to
incorporate them into classroom instruction (Lonergan, 2001). For this reason,
teachers and need to be prepared for using new methods base on technology
and to know how apply and adapt them according to students’ needs or their
learning objectives in order to improve English teaching.

4
C. The Growth of English Language Teaching Through Technology
21st century is the age of globalization and is important to grasp on various
foreign languages and English language comes first. English Language
Teaching has been with us for many years and its significance continues to
grow, fueled, partially by the Internet. Graddol’s study (2000) suggests that in
the year 2000 there were about a billion English learners- but a decade later the
numbers doubled. The forecast points to a surge in English learning, which has
peaked in 2010. The same study indicates that over 80% of information stored
on the internet is in English. For the first time there are more Non-Native than
Native users of the language and diversity of context in terms of learners, age,
nationality, learning background etcetera has become a defining characteristic
of ELT today.
With the rapid development of science and technology, the emerging and
developing of multimedia technology and its application to teaching, featuring
audio, visual, animation effects comes into full play in English class teaching
and sets a favorable platform for reform and exploration on English teaching
model in the new era. It’s proved that multimedia technology plays a positive
role in promoting activities and initiatives of student and teaching effect in
English class. Technological innovations have gone hand -in- hand with the
growth of English and are changing the way in which we communicate. It is
fair to assert that the growth of the internet has facilitated the growth of the
English language and that this has occurred at a time when computers are no
longer the exclusive domains of the dedicated few, but rather available to many.
With this there has been a very significant proliferation of literature regarding
the use of technology in teaching English language. Mostly these writings
unequivocally accept technology as the most essential part in teaching. In a
sense, a tendency to emphasize on inevitable role of technology in pedagogy
to the extent of obliterating human part of teacher by technology part has been
very dominant. And as a result, if we neglect or ignore technological
developments they will continue and perhaps we will never be able to catch up,
irrespective of our discipline or branch. For this reason, it is important for

5
language teachers to be aware of the latest and best equipment and to have a
full knowledge of what is available in any given situation. Teachers can use
Multimedia Technology to give more colorful and stimulating lectures.
There are many techniques applicable in various degrees to language
learning situation. Some are useful for testing and distance education, and some
for teaching business English, spoken English, reading, listening or
interpreting. The teaching principle should be to appreciate new technologies
in the areas and functions where they provide something decisively new useful
and never let machines take over the role of the teacher or limit functions where
more traditional ways are superior. There are various reasons why all language
learners and teachers must know how to make use of the new technology. Here
we also need to emphasize that the new technologies develop and disseminate
so quickly that we cannot avoid their attraction and influence in any form.

D. Benefits of Using Technology in Teaching and Learning English

English teaching has been greatly benefited for the use of technology
because it makes easier teaching and learning for both teachers and students
with the appropriated methods and resources. Here are some suggestions for its
application in the classroom according to the four language skills in order to
improve them, Basheer (2013) suggested: For improving listening skill
teachers can use TV and radio educational language programs like the BBC,
also the use of CD-player devices is another tool for listening comprehension.
For developing reading skill, teachers can use Multimedia computer programs
because they can increase the motivation for learner to develop their
vocabulary and reading skills. Also, several resources available on the Internet
in form of newspapers, magazines, journals, dictionaries, encyclopedias and
newsletters to enhance the learner’s vocabulary and reading ability. For
improving speaking skill, teachers could use chatting rooms with native
speakers or computer programs for practicing vocabulary and pronunciation.
At last, for developing writing skill teachers can use e-mails or text chatting for
helping to improve students’ writing. All these suggestions teachers are useful
for integrating the technology in the classroom and improve the English
teaching.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

A. Conclusion
Concerning the development of technology, we believe that in future, the
use of multimedia English teaching will be further developed. The process of
English learning will be more student-centered but less time-consuming.
Therefore, it promises that the teaching quality will be improved and students’
applied English skill scan be effectively cultivated, meaning that students’
communicative competence will be further developed.
In conclusion, we believe that this process can fully improve students’
ideation and practical language skills, which is helpful and useful to ensure and
fulfill an effective result of teaching and learning. Barring a few problem areas
multimedia technology can be used effectively in classrooms of ELT with
proper computer knowledge on the part of teachers, overcoming the finance
problems in setting up the infrastructure and not allowing the teachers to avoids
new technology.

B. Suggestion
This paper about The Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning English
that we can compile, hopefully can be useful for all of us especially for the
readers and that it can improve the quality of teaching and learning English in
Indonesia. This paper might be not perfect and for that we apologize for the
imperfection.
