CONTEXTUALIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Resource Speaker:BARBARA R. JOSOL,Teacher 1

Contextualization refers to the educational process of relating the

curriculum to a particular setting, situation or area of application to make the
competencies relevant, meaningful and useful to all learners.

The degree of contextualization may be described and distinguished into

localization and indigenization. Localization refers to process of relating learner
content specified in the curriculum to local information and materials in the
learners community. On the other hand, Indigenization refers to the process of
enhancing curriculum competencies, education resources, and teaching
learning processes in relation to bio-geographical, historical and socio-cultural
context of the learners’ community.

Moreover, contextualization of instructional materials is a very big help for

teachers to make the learning process enjoyable and meaningful. It helps the
pupils more interactive. It engages and motivates hard to reach learners and
their confidence and enthusiasm will develop because the learning is relevant.

Therefore, Contextualized Teaching and Learning engages students in

active learning while assisting them to make meaning out of the information
they are obtaining. Contextualized instruction links the learning of foundational
skills with academic or occupational content by focusing teaching and learning
squarely on concrete applications in a specific context that is of interest to the
student.

EXPLICIT TEACHING
Resource Speaker:ARNLUZ C. CAVAN

Explicit teaching involves directing student attention toward specific

learning in a highly structured environment. The teaching is focused on
producing specific learning outcomes. It composed of 3 components:
modelling (I Do), guided or directed practice (We Do) and Independent
practice (You Do).
Topics and contents are broken down into small parts and taught
individually. It involves explanation, demonstration and practice. Children are
provided with guidance and structured frameworks. Topics are taught in logical
order and directed by the teacher.
Moreover, explicit teaching is useful for introducing topics and specific
skills. It provides guided instruction in the basic understanding of required skills,
which students can then build on through practice, collaboration, repetition,
hands on activities and developmental play.
