SOP FOR WET PRESERVATION
Revision No.: 00
Document No.: PMPL/SOP/05 Effective Date: Page 3 of 6
Revision Date:

1. Objective:
This SOP is for Smooth Operation of Wet preservation of boiler.

2. Scope:
This SOP is applicable for Wet preservation of boiler.

3. Responsibility :
Unit Control Engineer, Field Engineer and Desk Engineer

4. Safety PPE’s:
Ear Plugs, Safety Goggles, Hand Gloves, etc.

5. Safety Precaution During operation

Ensure no permit to work is pending on regarding this system
by checking with EE/FE.

6. System Description
The Boiler is a once thro supercritical boiler. The BMCR for the
boiler is 2322tph at 25.12mpa SH outlet pressure. It is a full
suspended Π--type once-through boiler with the supercritical
pressure, primary intermediate reheating, single furnace
balanced ventilation, semi-enclosed arrangement, dry bottom.
The approximate quantity of volume in 816cum of each circuit.
When there is extended shutdown of boiler, the boiler tubes are
to protected against atmospheric corrosion. These are
accomplished by preventing direct atmospheric air contact with
tube surface and maintains proper water chemistry.

7. Boiler preservation step

a) Case 1. Pre planned Boiler shutdown for long duration
1. After tripping the boiler, when water temp is around 140-
160˚c, run BCP along with Fresh FW flow with high
Dosing of hydrazine and ammonia.
2. The water from separator outlet is to be recycled to
condenser.
3. When residual hydrazine increases, Bypass CPU and
continue the circulation and dosing.
4. When the residual hydrazine reaches the target value
stops the BCP, FW flow and dosing.

5. When the boiler superheater temp reaches 50degc, water

filling to superheater can be done as in case 2 below.

b) Case2.Boiler goes into extended shutdown after maintenance.

Prestart Up Checks

1. No PTW is pending in the concerned systems including

Daearator, feed water system, and boiler pressure
parts.
2. Ensure at least one feed water pump booster pump is
fully available, lined up as per pump SOP. MD BFP also
can be used.
3. Confirm with chemist that DM water of prescribed
quality and quantity is available in CST and adequate
DM streams are available to meet demand.
4. Water temp must be between 21 and 70 degc.
5. BCP pump HP coolant circuit is filled and venting done.
6. Fill Deaerator. While filling Deaerator, add chemical
dosing to bring water Ph to approx 10 and residual
hydrazine to 200ppm
7. All the vent valves in the boiler are open.
8. All drain valves are closed.
9. The boiler separator metal temperature and water Dt<
28 deg.
10. Ensure tight closing of MSSV and its bypass. Keep
the main steam drains after MSSV open.

8. Operating procedure (Boiler Pressurizing)

1. Start the booster pump/ BFP as per SOP.

2. Inform chemist to start dosing ammonia and hydrazine
so as to get the required water parameters
3. Keep the 30% FW control valve at 5-10%.
4. Slowly increase the scoop and speed of the BFP, in
case MDBFP is started and start filling the boiler up to

the main steam stop valve. The rate of flow to the

boiler must be bellow 110 tph.
5. Observe the separator getting filled and air purging out
of all boiler vents.
6. Further on feeding, observe for water coming from
vents.
7. Ensure continuous water is coming out of all vents. On
further feeding, when the boiler pressure reaches
2kg/cm2, close all vents.
8. By increasing the scoop/speed, control the rate of
pressure raise 2.5 to 3 Kg/cm².
9. At around 4 to 5 Kg/cm² , close the feed control valve
and hold the boiler pressure. Check the flash tank
drain valve for any water coming out. If any water
observed, tighten all drain valves.
10. As and when the boiler pressure drops to .2-.3Mpa,
the booster pump can be started again and
repressurise to 5 to 6 kg/cm².
11. Water sample to be taken every day to ascertain the
PH and residual hydrazine is being maintained.
Maintenance period and concentration regulations of
Ammonia and Hydrazine

Maintenance Period Hydrazine concentration

Less than a week 30ppm
1~4weeks 200ppm
More than 10 weeks 500ppm

12. If the required concentration is not maintained,

drain some water from boiler circuit and repressurise
with fresh dosed water to increase the concentration.
