INQUIRY MODULE

DESCRIPTION
My subject area of interest would be education, specifically second through fourth
grade. Within our education systems,there's a lot of improvements that must be made
technology-wise. As a future educator, you want to be able to learn about technology
and use it in your classroom. I believe that since our society is evolving and new
technology is being presented to the world and we need to learn to adapt and learn to
use it correctly and beneficially. I would want my future students to be able to use these
technologies in my classroom and benefit greatly from them and be able to explore.

Many schools have adapted STEAM programs which stands for Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. These schools sometimes have issues
adapting the technology part. It may be because of funding but also because many
Teachers haven’t used much technology in their classrooms. As the years go by our
World’s technology increases more and more. The younger and future generations will
Easily learn to adapt to this since that’s how their world growing up would be, for those
Born earlier it’s our job to begin to learn and adapt.

SUBJECT AREA OF INTEREST

​ My subject of interest is elementary education. I decide on this major because
I feel the students have more creativity at a younger age and their minds want to
explore more. They still are willing to explore, talk about what’s on their minds and
aren’t worry about getting the wrong answer or asking questions, compared to older
students.
IGNITED LABS TECHNOLOGY AREA (AI)
​ On the type of AI technology, I have observed would be the Sphero. I and
a few other classmates explored this because it’s a perfect example of a machine
functioning in an intelligent manner. I chose this technology because I believe that it
can make it much easier for kids to learn through play. The app that goes along with
Sphero opens so many doors for students to explore through technology. Using this as
a learning tool can better help engage learners.

1. ​How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the
way people learn within your subject area?
I believe that this technology will change the way people in my subject area.
It will give them the chance of having more hands on with technology while learning
through play which is huge for younger children. Since sphero is easily programmable
including it in some lesson plans would excite the kids to actually want to participate
and learn.

2. ​What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently?

What advancements (technological or otherwise) are needed for
this technology to reach its potential to transform the way we
Learn?
I believe what sphero needs to better advance this technology would be
Adding more apps and games to download make it more accessible for people.
Making it able to last longer than an hour of play would be a great idea especially
since if used in a classroom would come in handy if it lasted longer since the amount
of students would be around twenty or so and for all to wait a turn throughout a period
of an hour.

3. ​Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or

bad) outside of its original intended purpose? Do you foresee
anything we should be wary of?
I don’t see this technology being able to be used in any bad ways.One good
purpose of this technology I see would be that it can bring people together through
learning and play. It’s very good that it’s very durable and travels very easily. The fact
that its compatible with ios and android compatible means that everyone would be
able to interact with it. It can be used for many purposes as controls for a game was
something quite surprising to learn.
IGNITED LABS TECHNOLOGY AREA (XR)

What I discovered about Oculus Rift was how it can help experience different
environments. It gives people chances to visit different places while staying in the room.
I found it fascinating that there’s technology out there that gives you that full experience
without having to leave your place of comfort. Not only are you using your eyesight
but as well as listening and being able to use the hand controllers to interact.

1. ​How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the
way people learn within your subject area?
I think this technology will change the way people learn. For example if
they are learning about the rainforest and use the Oculus Rift to “visit” and see it
“in person.” Many students would benefit from this. A teacher could use this to her
advance to teach students about certain topics they may be going over. Last year
the club I was in fundraised to buy three ipods for an elementary along with VR
goggles for students to experiment with. It was a great experience for the kids and
everyone who was a part of this project.

2. ​What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently?

What advancements (technological or otherwise) are needed for
this technology to reach its potential to transform the way we

I personally don’t believe that there’s a way to advance this technology
I find that the elements the Oculus Rift has already works very well to give
people the type of full experience they may be looking for. The one in the
Ignited lab not only allowed us to see with them on but hear as if we were there
In person and the controllers gave the user control over what they could do.

3. ​Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or

bad) outside of its original intended purpose? Do you foresee
anything we should be wary of?
It can be used for fun. For people to explore. It is very enticing to use
So many people can just constantly be using it and are given the opportunity
to explore as much as they would like to. If a teacher is teaching about the ocean
they may turn to using a Oculus Rift and give the students the experience of using
these goggles to be able to experience by looking around listening to the creatures
In the ocean, letting them get a better view of them in action instead of textbooks.
IGNITED LABS TECHNOLOGY AREA (IOT)

(IoT) application you plan to / did explore and why you chose that
particular technology.
I chose to observe a 3D printer in the Ignited Lab. The fact that a machine
can create a model with just putting in a design within a couple hours and days is
very fascinating the amount of work a small machine can do is incredible. For me
a 3D printer can really change our world. The 3D printer is being used more and
more in setting one may not have thought about. For example, in hospitals they
Are being used now quite often.

1. ​How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the
way people learn within your subject area?
I believe that this technology will change the way people in my subject
area by learning through observing the machine doing it’s job. Having class
discussions on how the students believe it works, learning the different
elements a 3D Printer has. Using it to create material we may need to use
or observe during a lesson.

2. ​What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently?

What advancements (technological or otherwise) are needed for
this technology to reach its potential to transform the way we
Learn?
One shortfall that this technology has currently would be how expense
they can be. The 3D printer isn’t as popular as one would expect. I believe these
would be greatly used in a school setting but making them more accessible for
teachers and students to be able to observe and use in their classrooms. In a
Few years they are predicted to be more popular and used more often but does
that mean that they will get more expensive or less expensive if everyone is trying to
get one?
3. ​Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or
bad) outside of its original intended purpose? Do you foresee
anything we should be wary of?
​This technology could be used for good in many different ways.I can be used
to make parts for different things and can replace parts from machines. The printer
has been used in the medical field for different types of implants. It is reusing plastic
And can help reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans. The only problem is that
the more plastic is recycled the more weaker it may get. NASA has been doing
research about using 3D printing to produce food in space, but it’s currently still being
researched. The 3D printer if more reaschear is done can greatly benefit our society
in more than one way.

In my findings I learned that there are many new advances in technology in

Our modern world today. Learning to adapt many of these technologies would
benefit greatly classrooms all over. In a third grade classroom the students
would have an amazing opportunity to learn and explore these in an educational
Way. Being a future educator I believe that I would need to explore more through
technology.
There is a technology that is being improved for more advances for a better
Experience. Although some technology like phones along with that social media
Seems to have a good and bad effect on the younger generations. If we all learned
To use it correctly that will benefit not just one self but as well as our society as
A whole we can continue to greatly advance into the future. The technology
growing today will benefit our future generations in creating more jobs for them
many that we have yet learned about.

PERSONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE

experience exploring the three emerging technology areas. How
would you describe your own learning with / through / about those
technologies? Do you feel you learn better / worse / the same
through these technologies?

My personal experience in learning by using hands on or through observing

these technology areas in person has properly introduced me to the technology
that is evolving. I personally haven't noticed any of this happening around me.
Using the Oculus Rift has given me a more experience seeing and hearing using the
controls to move around and be more interactive. Seeing these technologies in person
and being able to experience what their purpose may be has opened my eyes about
how this can greatly benefit many classrooms. I myself feel like I could learn better
if these were incorporated in classrooms in lesson plans. Learning through technology
brings so many benefits and from now on all technology would be doing is continue
to grow.
