My subject area of interest is the 3D printer. It’s a great visual aid for technology. Drawbacks:
some can take up to hours depending on complexity. “Thingiverse” is a program that has
objects for printing. You use the computer to design a model of what you want printed. It sends
the design in a way the printer can read it. Then it takes a bit to heat up the plastic material it's
made of and it starts almost pixel by pixel “printing” or sculpting.
1. How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the way people learn within
your subject area?
Its also a very easy device to work, this could be a helpful tool as its just solely voice activated
anyone that can speak can use it. Uses for me as a future elementary teacher I can see myself
asking it questions and I know the younger kids would be amazed by it talking back. Or even
using it to play music for musical chairs, etc.
2. What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently? What advancements
(technologic or otherwise) are needed for this technology to reach its potential to
transform the way we learn?
Shortfalls of it: It can be asked a multitude of things, I would strongly suggest things like parental
controls for the Alexa and Echo Dot. This should go worldwide, and be able to work in
classrooms everywhere!
3. Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or bad) outside of its original
intended purpose? Do you foresee anything we should be wary of?
For good it can come in handy in the classroom, it can tell/read stories, and especially if you
have your audible account linked it can read to the kids for you! It can serve as a calculator or a
hassle free search engine as well just by asking it a question it’ll search it up for you right there.
It can also play podcasts, games and music. The bad I can see is it could be a distraction, kids
could use it without parental control for wrong intentions, etc. but if its used correctly and by the
adult/under supervision, i see no harm in it.
1. How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the way people learn within
your subject area?
You could use educational videos or games, the first I think of would be for nature lessons, or
even like the different seasons/weather vocabulary - putting a picture to a name for summer/fall,
etc. It helps people visualize things and experience them head on, things they will remember.
2. What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently? What advancements
(technologic or otherwise) are needed for this technology to reach its potential to
transform the way we learn?
This encourages the move in technology which can be good or bad. The studies have shown
VR headsets can have some health problems even. It can mess with your eyesight, vertigo, and
could even make you “seasick”.
3. Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or bad) outside of its original
intended purpose? Do you foresee anything we should be wary of?
It can be used for good for education like I said, or for games for stress relief even. For bad
maybe the more violent games could get pushed and advertised and take a toll on someone
being first hand in it. Noises/tight space could trigger claustrophobia or any other PTSD based
memories/flashes.
For each prompt – provide 1 – 2 paragraphs on your research experience using each
technology.
1. How do you think this technology will (or will not) change the way people learn within
your subject area?
It could change the way science projects and such work in elementary school. It also could be a
very fun learning tool for kids to watch and understand, also a lesson in patience as well!
2. What are some of the shortfalls of this technology currently? What advancements
(technologic or otherwise) are needed for this technology to reach its potential to
transform the way we learn?
The amount of time it takes to use, even small things can take hours. Maybe something to
speed up the process of the actual print? Could also look into additional materials that could
withstand the heat though, so it’s not so much plastic waste.
3. Describe how this technology might be utilized (for good or bad) outside of its original
intended purpose? Do you foresee anything we should be wary of?
I see good, it can make cute things for the classroom, and you can use it for live hands on
lessons. It even serves as a lesson on patience and appreciation of the work! I’m sure if the
technology advanced a lot and printed things more realistically using other materials (to the
point of gun models and weapons, etc.). (I remember hearing that was a potential threat when I
first learned about 3D printers).
Research conclusions
I think for the purpose of education they can be so good to use especially as everything is
advancing it is important we keep kids learning in that way as well. Times are changing and we
must adapt our curriculum to that just as much. (Having tech literacy!)
