JOB IDENTIFICATION

all, you have to find out what a fashion designer needs to be.

Fashion designers design garments for men, women and children, including casual, semi-casual,
formal and business attire. If you enter this profession, you might be designing everyday clothing or
one-of-a-kind, impractical, haute couture outfits for fashion shows. The concept of fashion design is
not only limited to clothing; it also extends to complementary items such as footwear, belts,
handbags and other accessories. Fashion/clothing designers design clothes, accessories and shoes.
Some design expensive one-off pieces. Others work in a team creating a whole range of mass-
produced fashions, or specialise in particular areas such as sportswear.

Hence, We look forward to hiring a fashion designer with panache and flair to capture the mood in
our ready-to-wear line on the street. The role needed for the company is of Associate Fashion
Designer who keeps an eye on the street, travels to shows and reads fashion magazines to discover
trends and interpret seasonal color palettes, patterns and prints. He / she will also manually sketch
designs, create technical drawings for production and address buyers as a seasoned marketer. In
order to ensure success, the person is suppose to follow trends, and implement product strategy. Ideal
candidates are expected to have excellent business skills and are creative geniuses.

JOB SPECIFICATION

The responsibilities of an Associate fashion designer include:

 Developing patterns, Overseeing production & Analysing trends in fabrics, colours and
shapes
 Selecting and buying fabrics and trims
 Adapting existing designs for mass production
 Supervising the making up of sample garments
 Quality control
 Creating or visualising an idea and producing a design by hand or using computer-aided
design (CAD)
 Planning and developing ranges
 Working with others in the design team, such as buyers and forecasters, to develop products
to meet a brief
 Understanding design from a technical perspective, i.e. producing patterns and technical
specifications for designs
 Sourcing, selecting and buying fabrics, trims, fastenings and embellishments
 Adapting existing designs for mass production
 Developing a pattern that is cut and sewn into sample garments and supervising the creation
of these, including fitting, detailing and adaptations.

Fashion/clothing designers need


 To be highly creative
 An eye for colour, texture and pattern
 The ability to visualise things in three dimensions
 Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment construction
 To enjoy following trends in fashion and clothing.

Hours and Environment


 Designers normally work 8 hours a day in the office/studio
 They might work much longer hours when preparing samples for buyers or collections for
fashion shows.
 High chances for attending fashion shows, prediction fairs and exhibitions, as well as visit
clients.
 Travel is often required in this field.

 New fashion designers need to be prepared to work in junior positions, developing other
people's designs, as colourists or in pattern-cutting, in order to gain experience and contacts.

 Extensive market research and business training are critical for any fashion business to
succeed.
 The pressure of deadlines and working unsocial hours to meet these may be stressful and
can intrude on private life.
 Career success relies on a combination of creativity, perseverance, resilience and good
communication skills.
 Travel within the working day, overnight absence from home and overseas work are
occasionally needed. There is scope for travel abroad, for example to attend trade shows
or to meet suppliers.

Although this area of work is open to all graduates, a degree in the following subjects will increase
the chances:

 textiles.

Progression may be slow, particularly at the start of your career.
Being proactive and making contacts in the industry is essential, especially in a sector where people

ACADEMIC OR TRADE QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in design or fine arts, or college degree in fashion design or related field.

Although area of work is open to all graduates, but a degree in art and design, clothing technology,
fashion marketing and buying, graphic design, knitwear and textiles will be encouraged.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

 Work experience of any kind in a design studio is highly desirable.


 Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment construction is
appreciated
 2+ years design experience.
 Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator.
 Availability to travel for research and product development.
 Ability to do sketches by hand.
 Excellent design and conceptual skills.
 Excellent sense of style and color.
 Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
 Ability to meet multiple deadlines.
