Mathematics 10
Semi Detailed Lesson Plan
I. Objectives
At the end of the 60- minute lesson, the students must be able to:
1. Review synthetic division
2. Use the remainder theorem to find the remainder when the given polynomial is divided by each
polynomial.
3.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Polynomials and Polynomial Equations
Sub-Topic: The Remainder Theorem
References: E-Math Grade 10 pp 112-115
Materials: Cartolina, pentel pen, whiteboard and task card
III. Procedures
A. Priming/ Activating Prior Knowledge
Review of Synthetic Division
Activity “Answer the Riddle”
The students will be group into four. Directions: Use synthetic division to divide the polynomials. Then
use the answer to determine which letter corresponds to the problem number to solve the riddle!
“What did the math teachers have for dinner?”
“___ ____ ____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____”
5 9 1 8 6 4 2 9 5 7 3
D= f(x)=(2x2 +x +5)(x+3)
M= f(x)=(2x +5)(x-7)
S= f(x)=(x2 +5x+10)(x+3)-24
E= f(x)=(6x-37)(x+9) +288
B. Lesson Proper
If f(x) is a polynomial and r is a real number , then f(x) is divided by x-r, we get a unique quotient which
is another polynomial q(x) and a remainder R which is a real number such that for all values of x,
F(x) =(x-r)Q(x) + R
Consider f(x)=(x-r)Q(x)+R
Note that if we let x=r, the expressions becomes f ( r ) = (r-r)q(r) + R
Simplifying gives : f ( r) = R
The process of getting the remainder theorem:
C. Analysis
Based on the given examples analyze the process of getting the remainder of a polynomial
function by using the remainder theorem.
1. What is the first step in getting the remainder theorem?
2. What will you do after getting the value of x of the divisor?
3. After substituting the value of to the polynomial function what will you do?
4. To check if your remainder is correct what will you do?
D. Application
Seat Work
Use the remainder theorem to find the remainder when each polynomial is divided by the
corresponding binomial.
1. P (x)=x3+3x2 +2x-9 is divided by x-1
2. P (x)=3x3+12x2 +3x+8 is divided by x-4
3. P (x)=4x3+57x2-4x-3 is divided by x+3
4. P (x)=2x3+4x2 +x-6 is divided by x+2
5. P (x)=x3-3x2 –x+2 is divided by x-3
E. Abstraction
What is the remainder theorem and how to find the remainder when polynomial P(x) is
divided by (x-r)?
Arrange Me
Arrange the expressions or words in the box to formulate the remainder theorem.
IV. Closure
In this lesson, substituting the variables (x) by the given value in (x-r) is so important. We cannot
solve or get the remainder of the given P(x) divided (x-r), if we are not going to substitute. It’s essential.
In real life we need the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It’s being able to
put yourselves in the other shoes.
