GEOTHERMAL MANIFESTATION
Geothermal manifestations in the Kapahiang area consist of fumaroles, hot
springs, alterated rocks, and solfatara, which can generally be grouped into
eight groups. The naming and grouping of geothermal manifestations is
based on the place or location of the existence of these manifestations.

a. Sempiang Group

The manifestation of the Sempiang group is in the upstream of the

Airputih River in the Bukit Itam area, which is in the UTM zone 48
S coordinates (234,715 mT; 9,606,757 mS) at an elevation of 1286
m asl. The manifestation of this group consists of fumaroles, hot
springs, and altered rocks. Fumarol Sempiang has the highest
temperature of 94,1 °C, around it there are hot springs with
temperatures of 94,1 °C at air temperatures of 30,1 °C, pH 4,20, and
discharge of 30 liters / second. The conditions of cloudy hot water,
sour taste, smell of sulfur, and there are silica sintered deposits.

b. Babakan Bogor Group

The manifestation of the Babakan Bogor group was found in

Babakan Bogor village at UTM zone 48 S (229,261 mT; 9,600,988
mS) at an elevation of 573-604 m asl. The manifestation of this
group is in the form of 2 hot springs with temperatures of 41,3 °C at
air temperatures of 27,0 °C, pH = 5,52 – 6,5, and discharge of 2-20
liters / second. In addition, in Babakan Bogor there are cold springs
that appear at an elevation of 619 m asl. with temperatures of 30,1
°C at air temperatures of 25,0 °C, pH = 6,22, and discharge of 20
liters / second.

c. Sindang Jati Group

The manifestation of the Sindang Jati group is at the Lang riverbank

at the coordinates (244,286 mT; 9,613,547 mS) with an elevation of
902 m asl. The manifestation of this group is the appearance of 2 hot
springs and hydrothermal changes. Hot water temperature 35,8-36,2
°C at air temperature 30,4 °C, pH 6,4, and discharge 15 liters /
second. Hydrothermal changes are found in pyroclastic flow units
with moderate change intensity, altered rocks into clay minerals
(kaolin, smectite) and iron oxide.

d. Suban Group

11
The manifestation of the Suban group is in Suban village at UTM
zone 48 S (229,923 mT; 9,617,056 mS) with an elevation of 850 m
asl. The manifestation of this group is in the form of 2 hot springs
with a temperature of 49,0-51,8 °C at an air temperature of 26,6 °C,
pH 5,9, and discharge of 5 liters / second. Around the hot spring
carbonate sinters are found. These hot springs have now been used
as tourism objects.

e. Kaba Group

The manifestation of the Kaba group is around the Gunung Kaba

complex, especially in the Kaba Besar and Kaba Baru crater areas at
UTM 48 S coordinates (236,264 mT; 9,611,156 mS) with an
elevation of 1900 m asl. The manifestations of this group are
fumaroles, solfatara, hot water, hot mud, and rock alteration.
Fumarole temperature 96,0 °C and solfatara 360 °C.

f. Tempel Rejo Group

The manifestation of the Tempo Rejo group is in the PU Complex

of Tempel Rejo Village, Curup District, Rejang Lebong District or
at coordinates 227,181 mT and 9,613,590 mS. The manifestation of
this group is in the form of hot springs with a temperature of 47,5
°C at an air temperature of 26,1 °C, pH 5,85, and discharge of 0,5
liters / second.

g. Taba Penanjung

The manifestation of the Taba Penanjung group is around the

Bengkulu - Kepahiang road, at coordinates 228,811 mT and
9,594,818 mS with an elevation of 650 m asl. The manifestation of
this group is hydothermal alteration with very strong change in
intensity.

h. Bayung Group

The Manifestation of the Bayung group is in the village of

Tabapadang at the coordinates of 235,272 mT; and 9,588,833 mS
with an elevation of 575 m asl. The manifestation of this group is in
hot springs in paddy fields with temperatures of 58,8 °C at air
temperatures of 31,1 °C, pH 6, and discharge of 10 liters / second.

3. O AND 2H ISOTOPES

12
The concentrations of 18O and 2H Isotopes (D) were five samples of hot
water (Ap. Sempiang, Ap. Babakan Bogor-1, Ap. Suban, and Ap. Bayung)
and one cold water sample (Ad. Babakan Bogor). The value of δ18O ranges
from -8,78 to -7,73 ‰ and the value of δD ranges from -57,2 to –53,5 ‰.
The ratio value is plotted in the graph δD vs 18O, with the meteoric water
line δD = 8δ18O +14.

5. SUPPORTING DATA

13
a. Soil Air Temperature Distribution

Soil temperature varies greatly with the lowest values of 20,2 °C to

the highest of 57,5 °C. Temperature variations give a background
value of 29,8 °C, a threshold value of 34,7 °C, and an average value
of 25,0 ° C. High anomalies >30 °C occur around the location of the
fumaroles / solfatara of the Crater of Kaba Volcano and Fumarol
Sempiang and around the location of the Babakan Bogor hot springs.
Temperature values of 25-30 °C were distributed to the east of the
location of Kaba Volcano slope, north and south of the location of
the Babakan Bogor hot spring, while the temperature value of less
than 25 °C was located in the middle and western part of the
investigation area.

b. Soil pH Distribution

Soil pH shows the lowest value of 4,72 to the highest of 7,20.

Variation in soil pH gives a background value of 6,78, a threshold
value of 7,23, and an average value of 6,34. The low pH value <6 is
located in the manifestations of fumaroles / solfatara Crater of Kaba
Volcano, Sempiang fumaroles, and at a very point the C2500
extends to C6500 which is located 1 km south of the location of
Sempiang fumaroles. A pH value of 6-7 spread dominates the
investigation area, while the pH value is >7, only a small portion of
the investigation area.

c. Distribution of Hg from Soil Samples

The Hg concentration of soil after being corrected by H2O

concentration values, varies from the lowest value of 5 ppb, to the
highest value of 2915 ppb. Land Hg variation, gives a background
value of 147 ppb, the threshold value is 208 ppb, and the average
value is 86 ppb. The distribution map of soil Hg values shows
relatively high anomalies >200 ppb located around the fumaroles /
solfatara of the Kaba Volcano Crater, and Fumarol Sempiang and
around the Babakan Bogor cold water and its alteration sites in
Babakan Bogor, which are associated with the northeastern
southwest, while Hg 100 -200 ppb at the slop of Kaba Volcano,
and in the south and east of the Babakan Bogor alteration location,
while Hg <100 ppb was spread dominating the investigation area.

d. Ground Air CO2 Distribution

Soil CO2 concentrations varied from the lowest 0,42% to the highest
concentration of 8,14%. CO2 variation in soil air, showing
background value of 2,14%, threshold value of 2,75%, and average
value of 1,52%. High anomalies >2,0% occur around the fumaroles
/ solfatara of the G. Kaba Crater, Fumarol Sempiang, in the southern
part of the Babakan Bogor alteration site and some parts are
irregularly distributed, CO2 concentrations are between 1,5-2,0%,
distributed in a small part of the investigation area, while the value
of <1,5% is spread more evenly.
