ECE214: Digital Circuits and Systems (DCS)

Programme: B.Tech. (ECE) Year: IInd Semester: I
Course: Core for all ECE, CSE and CCE Credits: 3 Hours: 40

Course Context and Overview (100 words):

Introduction to the Digital Circuits and Systems (DCS) is towards the aim of designing the
fastest growing digital technology systems over given specifications. This course will equip
the students to think of their own digital processors and build them on hardware (ASICs or
FPGAs). Some very common and daily life examples of digital systems out of millions are as
follows: digital watch, vending machine controller (ATM machine), digital scientific
calculator using CORDIC algorithms, washing machine controller (hardware part), digital
remote controls, automatic digital locks, digital games, automatic digital control in cars,
robots, digital cameras, mobile phones etc.

Prerequisites Courses: None

Course outcomes (COs):

On completion of this course, the students will have the ability to:
CO1: Know the basics of number systems, Boolean algebra and digital system design.
CO2: Convert from one number system to other and perform computations in various number
systems.
CO3: Minimize the Boolean expressions using Boolean algebra, K maps and QM method.
CO4: Describe a logic function using CMOS logic.
CO5: Design combinational circuits including adders, encoder, decoders, multiplexers and
complex structures using logic gates and CMOS logic.
CO6: Design and analyze various sequential circuits like latches, flip flops and counter using logic
gates.
CO7: Describe, design and analyze different Finite State Machines (FSM).

Item Weightage (%)

Quiz (four in total) 20*

Midterm 30

Final Examination 50

Attendance**: Students with less than 75% attendance will get a penalty of 1 grade and less than
60% attendance will be debarred from taking the final exam.

Mid Semester Exam: It will have 30% weightage on the overall marks in the course.
End Semester Exam: This exam will have 50% weightage of the overall marks in the course. In the end
semester exam 30% questions will come from the part of course covered before
mid-semester and rest 70% questions will be from the course covered after mid-
semester.

*Out of four quizzes, best three will be considered for the final grading. There will not be any re-quiz /
makeup quiz in any circumstances.
**Out of total 40 lectures you are allowed to be absent in up to 10 lectures (75%) to avoid 1 grade
deduction and 16 lectures (60%) to avoid being debarred from attempting the final exam.

***Notice that, you have around one month period to avoid grade deduction and around one and half
months to avoid getting debarred form the final exam. Calculations to justify the above mentioned
statement is provided below:
• Missing 3 lectures = absent for 1 week, therefore missing 10 lectures = absent for 3 weeks.
• Missing 16 lectures ≈ absent for 5 weeks / more than one month.

Therefore, taking above calculations in consideration, we are not going to exempt your attendance on
any ground, be it medical or any other unavoidable circumstances. You are required not to miss more
than 16 lectures in the current semester.
