preparing to gather around

their Christmas trees at home. But
before that communities will have the
chance to gather for tree lightings to
commemorate the yuletide season.
The tree lightings in the town square
of Leonardtown and the volunteer fire
company in Hollywood are among the
largest in St. Mary’s.
As many as 10,000 people pour into
Leonardtown each year Nov. 29 for
Christmas on the Square to see the
annual tree lighting, which has many
other events mixed in, including a visit
from Santa and Mrs. Claus.
“The event brings holiday traditions to
life with festive music, fire truck rides,
face painting, a living Nativity, horse

“In the grand scheme of things this is a
small version of that [the Leonardtown
tree lighting],” said Hollywood Fire Chief
Richard Brady.
But it’s still one of the highlights of the
Christmas season for Hollywood.

lot,” Brady said. “We’ve got games
and activities like making Christmas
ornaments.”

know when they can visit with Santa
Claus that night, Brady said.
“That way they don’t have to wait
around, they’ll have plenty to do,” said
Brady.

Madrigal Dinners Take the Christmas Spirit Back Centuries

istoric St. Mary’s City offers
lovers of dinner, night life and
festival the chance to look at
what celebrating Christmas in the
17th century was like.

Madrigal dinners provide nighttime
feasting and music at the replica of
first State House built as the capital
of the Maryland colony, first settled
in 1634.
“They’re awesome,” said event
coordinator Mary Bohanon. “The
decorations are different each year;

The dinners begin Dec.6 and run on
Dec. 7, 8, 13 and 14; event planners
are still taking reservations.
The maximum capacity each night
is 80 attendees with 10 people per
table; members of Historic St. Mary’s
City pay $90, while non-members pay
$95.
This Christmas represents the 48th
year the city has hosted madrigal
dinners, billed as: “a night of good
food, libations, music and amusing
skits in the beautifully decorated
State House with the ambiance of
candlelight and open fires in the
fireplaces.”
Dress is semi-formal and period
dress is welcomed.
The evening begins at 6p.m. with
wassail served on the second floor;
guests are expected to bow or curtsy
upon meeting the high-born hosts at
the affair.
Dinner is served on the first floor of
the state house.
The appetizers are stuffed ham on
rolls or biscuits, crab fondue, cheese
board with grapes.
The dinner is family style fried
oysters followed by plated dinner
of scones and rolls, fresh field
green salad, beef tenderloin, stuffed
chicken breast, green beans, roasted
potatoes and chocolate cake.
The menu has overtones of
yesteryear but is still geared towards
modern palates.
The drinks are spiked and un-spiked
wassail, red and white wine, iced tea,
water, coffee and hot tea. There is a
vegetarian option of stuffed winter
squash as the main entree and gluten
free option as well.
The madrigal dinners have their
history in the ebb and flow of trade
between England and its far flung
colony.
“In the colony, delicacies arrived
with the tobacco fleet towards the
end of the year, and cool weather
signaled time for butchering meat
and decanting beverages that
had fermented since the harvest,”
according to the city’s history.
These would form the basis of the
dinners; many other aspects would
be added to the celebration.
“The notion of adding music to the
meal was introduced to England
from Italy, and the 16th-century lords
and ladies of the land enjoyed great
madrigal feasts. Today’s madrigal
dinners feature other customs
that were probably familiar to the
colonists. The burning of a Yule log,
a common practice by the Middle
Ages, was thought to bring good luck
in the New Year,” according to the
city’s history. “Plants that magically
remained green through the
bleakest times have held a special
significance since Ancient Rome.
In 15th- and 16th- century England,
musicians sang carols to introduce
the Christmas story to those who
were unable to read.”

Annmarie Garden in Lights also features live
entertainment each night, the Hardesty Haven
Holiday Café, unique shopping in the Annmarie
Gift Shop, an Ornament Show & Sale, Holiday Pop-
up Shops, and much more! Special themed nights
throughout the month include, Snow Princess
Night, Scout Caroling Night, Santa Night, Festive
Holiday Attire Night and Pet Night. Special nights
include live characters who will greet guests and
provide great photo opportunities.

big box stores the day after

Friday, to get the Christmas gift
season started.
Small businesses, mom and pop
shops and the like all look to Small
Business Saturday, immediately after
the biggest shopping day of the year,
to give them a boost.
Ellen Lewis, owner of Crazy for
Ewe yarn shop in Leonardtown
and president of the Leonardtown
Business Association, said Small
Business Saturday is one of the most
critical for the town’s wellbeing.
“It’s huge for us,” Lewis said. “We
are the spot in St. Mary’s County
were small, independent businesses
much interest in the downtown
businesses, she said, and she
encourages any business to put out
notices on their store front or social
media that the day is geared towards
supporting entrepreneurship in the
communities where shoppers live.
Small businesses may not have all
the items the average shopper wants
at the lowest price, but, Lewis said,
they specialize in unique gifts.
“[Leonardtown small businesses
are] the place where people who are
looking for a unique experience can
find it,” Lewis said.
Aside from retail boutique shops,
businesses such as Escape Rooms
of Southern Maryland and Board and
Brush offer special activities that can

to help local shop keepers.
The day falls between Black Friday
and Cyber Monday, rounding out the
biggest shopping weekend in the
country.
The internet and the ability to
purchase nearly anything on-line
has deeply cut into retail profits, but
Lewis said, cyber shopping doesn’t
have all the advantages that local
retail can provide.
“You can buy clothes on-line but you
can’t try them on,” Lewis said. “The
internet is here to stay but small,
brick and mortar retail is here to stay,
too.”

Museum Store Sunday is just the start of the
many ways you can support your local museums
this holiday season. The public can enjoy holiday
shopping at the museum stores all December
long. Shoppers can visit the stores daily, 12 p.m.
to 4 p.m., except Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day, when they are closed. While shopping, why

MADRIGAL DINNERS
HISTORIC ST. MARY’S CITY
Welcome the holiday season with feasting,
firelight, and beautiful music in the lavishly
decorated Reconstructed State House of
1676.Holiday revelers have feasted through
the ages. In the colony, delicacies arrived
with the tobacco fleet towards the end of
the year, and cool weather signaled time for
butchering meat and decanting beverages
that had fermented since the harvest. The
notion of adding music to the meal was
introduced to England from Italy, and the
16th-century lords and ladies of the land
enjoyed great madrigal feasts. Today’s
madrigal dinners feature other customs
that were probably familiar to the colonists.
The burning of a Yule log, a common
practice by the Middle Ages, was thought
to bring good luck in the New Year. Plants
that magically remained green through
the bleakest times have held a special
significance since Ancient Rome. In 15th-
and 16th- century England, musicians sang
carols to introduce the Christmas story to
those who were unable to read. All of these
traditions are part of HSMC’s Madrigal
Dinners.
