To whom it may concern,

Dear sir/madam, I am writing concerning the mechanical engineering internship available

at your institution. I am currently attending Riverdale High School in my twelfth year. I plan to

further my education by obtaining a six year degree at an institution of higher learning in the

field of mechanical engineering. As it stands I have maintained above a 3.5 grade point average

throughout my high school career. I also have kept a clean record of conduct.

I have always held an interest in the field of technology and have tried to reflect that

interest academically. I became a member of my school’s FIRST Robotics team. As a member I

had an opportunity to develop coding skills as well as get a better understanding of basic

engineering principles. I have taken several courses to gain knowledge in the field of STEM

including physical sciences, computer technology, and a course directly dedicated to

engineering. In terms of extracurriculars I also participated in MESA, which hosted several

engineering challenges and projects that I enjoyed participation in. I have also been inducted into

the National Honor Society in recognition of my academic achievements. As a member I learned

important skills in community service.

I think participating in this internship is a big opportunity with which I could further my

skill and education. It will also open the door for many career opportunities and connections in

the industry.

Education Philosophy
As it stands, the current educational system could be improved to better prepare students

to become productive members of society. Higher education is important and can be beneficial,

however it is not something that is necessary for everyone to become successful. School is

currently geared toward preparing students to enter into a 4 year institution, but this doesn’t suit

everyone. I believe schools should become more oriented toward preparing students for the

occupations they are more suited for.

Firstly, everyone would receive general education for their first six years in school. After

which everyone would choose to receive either practical or a more academically inclined

education. Those with practical education would prepare to have a vocation after graduating high

school. They would also receive important practical skills for their adult life. The academic

students would receive focused preparation for college. This way, everyone gets exactly what

they need from school.

In addition to this, class sizes would be smaller and there would be more teachers. In

doing so, students would get the attention they need. Teachers would be able to identify and

address any issues a student might have. Students in large classes are often left behind and are

unable to have their weaknesses fully addressed.

The implementation of these two practices would result in more well rounded students. It

would also mitigate a developing lack of interest in school. This way, students can be more fully

prepared for what comes after high school. Too often, students are forced to follow a path that

doesn’t fit them.
