 The building material company TARMAC
have developed a new kind of concrete that is
capable of absorbing up to 4,000liters(1025
gallons) of water in the first minute.
 On average , one square meter of this new road
surface , called “Topmix Permeable” can drain
600 liters (159 gallons) in a minute.
 Water absorbing road is a type of road which is
made up of ‘concrete’ composite material
composed of aggregate bonded together with a
fluid cement which hardens over time. Most
use of term ‘concrete’ refers to Portland cement
concrete or to concretes made with other
hydraulic cements, such as cement fondu.
 Road surfaces are made up of “asphaltic
concrete”, where the cement material is
bitumen.
 Rather than using sand-based concrete. Tarmac uses something
called “no-fines concrete”. It’s made up of tiny pieces of crushed
granite packed together. While Burgess says the mixture is
extremely dry, the pieces are packed loosely enough to allow
water to pass through.
 The system can accommodate three designs: full infilteration, and
full attenuation.
 As we see every year almost 60% area of india is
facing the problem of flood due to heavy rainfall.
All the roads get blocked transportation seems like
impossible. It’s the time INDIA should raise some
attention toward water absorbing roads.
 We are also facing depletion of water ground table
in most of the urban areas due to cemented roads.
By the use of water absorbing roads we can also
increase the water ground table.
 We can also use thirsty concretes in some areas of
gardens which can help us in storing the rainwater
for further uses.
 Being able to control and actively manage the
drainage of rainwater from the developed
landscape significantly reduces the risk of
surface water flooding, protecting both the
natural and built environment
 Research is going on the strength and all the
limitations of the water absorbing road.
