EXAMINATION IN STATISTICS 210

INSTRUCTIONS:
 Answer all questions in A4 bond paper. Do not write-back-to back.
 Show complete solutions and round off the final answer/s up to two decimal places for
computations. Encircle the final answer/s as well.
1.a A researcher was commissioned to conduct an efficacy test of a bio-fertilizer in peanut. Nine levels of the
bio-fertilizer and a control (100% inorganic fertilizer) will be considered. The area to be used shows no
distinct gradient. Prepare an experimental layout of this experiment with 4 replications. Justify the
experimental design to be used in assigning the treatments. (10 marks)
b. Prepare an outline of the analysis of variance of the above problem. Specify the df and the critical values
of F at 5 and 1% level of significance. (5 marks)
2a. Five new lettuce varieties were given to you for a trial in a glasshouse using polyethylene bags. Due to
the very limited amount of seeds, Varieties 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 could only be replicated 3, 2, 4, 3 and 4,
respectively. With five (5) polyethylene bags per variety and replication, illustrate the experimental
layout. Specify and justify the design to be used. (10 marks)
b. Outline the ANOVA table with the df and critical values of problem 2a. (5 marks)
3. The following data are weight of cucumber (in kg) using 2 foliar fertilizers (T1 and T2) with four rates: F1,
F2, F3, F4 and F5 as the control. The experiment was laid out in a split – plot design in RCB. Analyze the
data and draw your conclusions following the steps in hypothesis testing. Consider the assumptions
underlying ANOVA/F test. Interpret the results and compare the means if the F test/s is significant.
Calculate the coefficient of variations. (30 marks)

4. Prepare the layout of the experiment in problem 3 using strip plot design and outline the analysis of variance
with the computed df . Specify the critical values of F at 5 and 1% level of significance. (10 marks)
5. Discuss very briefly the data that violate some assumptions of the analysis of variance and give some
examples or situations wherein such violations can be observed. (15 marks)
6. Discuss comprehensively the method of data transformation as a remedial measure for handling variance
heterogeneity. (15 marks)
7. Assume that you will conduct an experiment for your thesis next semester.
a. What will be your topic and why do you select such?
b. Give at least two objectives and state such in the form of hypotheses.
c. Specify the treatment names or factors (and factor levels) to study.
d. Prepare the experimental layout indicating the design to use and the reason/s of using it.
e. Enumerate the variables/data to be gathered.
f. Outline the would-be ANOVA table for the said experiment.
g. Make the decision rule/s for your hypothesis/es. (25 marks)
