The global trend of disaster nowadays compels all institutions and individuals to

keep abreast with Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) preparedness, prevention and
mitigation trainings, to which the Philippine Red Cross is advocating.

Manuel A. Roxas Elementary School, Sta. Ana District, Davao City Division is fortu-
nate to have attended the 2-day Seminar Orientation on Disaster Risk Reduction
Management held on October 28-29, 2017 at the school campus with the facilitation
of the Philippine Red Cross.

Eight (8) Modules were comprehensively delivered by Mr. Erwin C. Nacorda, Ms.
Sigrid V. Haspe, Khristeine Mie E. Gallanon, Ms. Angelica D. Fuentes, and Ms.
Aprille Kaye G. Ancla from Disaster Risk Response Team of Philippine Red Cross.
Teacher-participants and few students were able to refresh and update themselves on
matters pertaining to disasters.

Teacher-participants and few students were able to refresh and update themselves on
matters pertaining to disasters.

The first day of the training brought the participants to a small- group discussion
work-shop of the Introductory Module, the Training Orientation, in which
establishing rapport among other participants and trainers was achieved with
understanding on the norms and rules of the training. Acquaintance with the history
of the Red Cross was also presented that led to the correc-tion of the
misconception on the correct use and misuse of the Red Cross emblem.

Module 1, Disaster Landscape in the Philippines and Hazard Review was also present-
ed with a film showing leading to group dynamics workshop, unveiling the knowledge
of infor-mation on reasons why Philippines is prone to disasters, understanding the
nature and characteris-tics of the different hazard found in it.

A quite thrilling activity has made participants interactive through Hazard Mapping
in Module 2 wherein participants did a Mapping Exercise on identifying existing
hazard risk re-sources in the school community. Participants were also able to
present the identified risks in school and the School Head was made aware of the
precautionary measures to be done.

Participants were taught on Prevention, Mitigation, and Preparedness Principles in


Module 3, unfolding the information on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change
Adaptation as stated in the Republic Act 10121, understanding the provisions of the
law and know by heart why it is important to mainstream/ integrate disaster risk
reduction and climate change adaptation activities in the disaster management
especially in schools.

Day 1 ended with Module 4 in which a workshop on Situation and Needs Assessment
(SANA) was presented by group after identifying the existing risks, hazards,
vulnerabilities and resources in the community.

The second day of the seminar was productively facilitated with another four
modules. Module 5, What To Do During Emergencies was conducted with Earthquake
Preparedness and Fire Safety with actual drill. Protecting oneself from occurrences
of such disasters and suppressing common household fire was actually demonstrated
by all participants with the use of a Fire Ex-tinguisher.

The school was required to update the creation of a Disaster Action Team as
undertaken in Module 6 . Community Emergency Evacuation Plan and DRR Action Plan
were also updated by the school team spearheaded by the School DRRM Coordinator,
Mr. Ricky Ta-asan.

Family Disaster Plan was introduced in Module 7 with four easy steps to safety.
Among the topics discussed in this module are knowing the importance of having
one’s own fami-ly disaster plan and the need to prepare. As such, parents should
make available of the emergency supplies and survival kit in homes. Knowing the ten
things to do to save lives and the importance of posting the emergency contact
numbers were also emphasized.

A lecture demonstration on First Aid Application was done in Module 8, the last
mod-ule. Basic life support techniques and proper handling of injured persons in
the event of emergen-cies were appropriately conducted.

The day ended with smiles on participants’ faces. With the comprehensive DRRM
knowledge given by the Philippine Red Cross Disaster Team, teacher-participants are
now always ready with no panic in times of disasters with the information in hand.
