Originally Answered: What are the government exams for a civil engineer?

There is a list of examination for civil engineers which are being conducted every year -

1.Gate ( graduate aptitude test ) - generally happens in the month of January February.

This is an objective type paper.

For higher studies like M.tech , gate is compulsory , candidate is awarded government colleges relevant to
his/ her gate score.

Even most of the universities ask for gate score card

Through gate , one can directly be selected for some PSUs.

2. IES ( Indian engineering services) - this is the biggest government examination for any engineering
services in India . it is conducted by upsc and happenes to be in following sections - pre , mains and
interview.

Most of the A class engineers in India are selected through this exam.

They occupy top positions in any of the construction deapartments like - CPWD , Railways , metros ,
geological survey of India ,central water engineering , boarder roads engineering services and many more.

3. SSC junior engineer-

Both the degree holder and diploma holders can apply for this particular examination.It is conducted

each year in two parts by ssc( there is no interview for this job ) -

1 prelims- in the month of January , February

2 mains - in the month of July ,August.

Candidates selected through this get to work in all central government departments into construction - viz
CPWD , central water engineering , MES ,central water commission. Etc.

These were the examinations which are conducted every year .

Now there are some examinations which certainly do not take place every year but still offer equivalent
positions , these are -

RRB ( Railway Recruitment Board)-

Railways recruit section engineers and junior engineers through separate examination.

PSC -

State public service commission also conduct engineering examination , the candidates selected through
these examination get to work under the state governments departments like - PWD , road development
corporations , irrigation , phed , VVN .

In my view , state government examinations are relatively easier to compete than the examinations
conducted by the Central government.

Civil engineering is most fancy stream in the Engineering. I mean a civil engineer can give most of the
exams. If any exams asked for B.tech as qualification then most of the time civil engineer can apply for that
exam. Here is the list of some important government jobs for which a civil engineer can apply:-

1. Civil services :- Most famous exam now a days. You can see that in the results, Mostly qualified
students are engineer and most of them are civil engineer.

2. State PSC

3. SSC :- Staff service commission, again a famous option for a civil engineer.

4. Gate :- Many PSU recruit through Gate, here is some names :- Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL),
NTPC Ltd, GAIL India Ltd, ONGC, Power Grid Corporation Of India, NPCIL, POSOCO, DDA and
many more. They also give remarkable package.

5. IES :- Indian engineering service conducted by UPSC.

6. IBPS :- Banking is like a sadabahar option for civil engineer. So many exams conducted by IBPS
throughout the year. More exams more opportunities.

7. AEN/JEN :- Assistant engineer/ junior engineer in many state department.

8. AIRPORT AUTHORITY OF INDIA:- Airport authority also conduct exams for selection of
engineers.

9. LECTURER:- Many exams are conducted for the selection of lecturer post in many Govt. Engineer
College.

These are some Govt. Exams available for civil engineer. In my opinion civil engineers have the wide scope
for the selection of jobs.
