ARC 302: Design VI

The Shade: Design of a Naturally Ventilated Convention Hall

The first project is all about creating a large spanned space for public gathering - which is to be dedicated hold
multiple public events . The concern is how to design a covered space without any obstruction of intermediate
vertical structures that can provide users shelter from wind, sun, rain while enjoying a performance. In addition
there should be some supportive facilities like storage areas, washrooms, public lounge and car parking facilities.
The propositions should evoke structural integrity and excellence as well as aesthetically pleasant space quality
for the city people.

Methodology:

Study Phase: The first task will be to conduct an in-depth study and critical analysis of large span architectural
spaces and structural design aspects for designing such space. Students will present their understanding on the
light of reference book “Structure as Architecture”.
Design Phase: Based on the findings, each student will formulate a program and design a large span structure in
a given site. Focus will be given on achieving design excellence through innovation structural solutions. Another
aspect will be to achieve a ‘naturally ventilated atmosphere’ within the large span space. Programmatic
understanding of public place design, attention to climate, context and site forces, sound solution for vehicular
and pedestrian movement and car parking will be other important factors for evaluating the design.

 Understanding of relationship between space requirements, vehicular and pedestrian circulation and
advanced structural system
 Relationship of the proposed design to the given site surroundings and develop formal expression from a
synthesis of functional understanding and structural design of a large spanned public space.
