Harry Winterthorne
Director, Undergraduate Internships
JP Morgan Chase
270 Park Ave.
New York, NY 10017

Dear Mr. Winterthorne:

I am interested in speaking with you regarding a Summer Analyst position with

JP Morgan Chase. Both my employment experience and my classes in finance
have prepared me well to make a significant contribution to your organization. As
undergraduate at the University of Southern Maine, I have gained a great deal of
knowledge that will enhance your firm’s success.

In addition to my finance courses, I have acquired skills in balance sheets,

income statements, most types of financial statements, and working capital
management.

With minimal training, I expect to contribute significantly as a part of your team.

My strengths lie in my understanding of the principles behind accounting and
finance, as well as my ability to communicate effectively and willingness to work
hard.

My leadership of my class as president for three consecutive years, along with

the drive I demonstrate in competitive Taekwondo, have enabled me to
competently utilize my attention to detail and organization while providing
exemplary results. My previous employers can attest to my motivation, loyalty,
and service and affirm that they have entrusted me with increasing amounts of
responsibility.

My strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other

applications, would be a considerable plus for JP Morgan Chase. As a student
juggling multiple projects, I also developed excellent time-management skills and
the ability to keep a cool head in high-pressure situations.

I am confident that I will be an asset to your organization. My qualifications are

an excellent fit with the needs of your firm. In addition, my strong dedication to
12 ZT/Sem-II/ 16’
achieving excellence and my commitment to continually increasing my
knowledge and education cannot but contribute to JP Morgan Chase’s continued
prosperity.

I am eager to meet with you. I will contact you soon to arrange for an interview at
your convenience. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me by phone at
207-555-4342.

Cover Letter Basics

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter introduces you and your resume to a potential employer, explaining
both your reasons for writing and your qualifications for a specific position.

Purpose - a cover letter is always sent with your resume to introduce

yourself to an employer and to communicate your interest in being considered for
a position with that organization. The cover letter should make note of some of
your qualifications for the job and get the employer interested in reading your
resume. Each cover letter you send will be different. The last paragraph of a
cover letter should include a request for an interview.

Tips for Writing an Effective Cover Letter

* Address each letter to a specific contact person. If you do not know the name of
a contact, call the organization and ask for the name of the Manager or Director
of the department that interests you. If you can't find a contact name, write "Dear
Director," but only as a last resort.
* Describe your accomplishments and experiences in a way that focuses on the
needs of the employer. Cover letters need to be tailored to the employer and
position for which you are applying. Avoid creating one cover letter and mass
mailing it to employers.
* Research the employer. Your letter should reflect that you know something
about the organization and the type of industry in general. Each letter should be
unique to that organization. Do not use a letter that looks like it could have been
sent to anyone.
* Conclude the letter by directly asking for an opportunity to meet and/or talk with
the employer. Include your contact information. It is appropriate to contact the
employer one to two weeks after you send the letter to confirm they received
your application and to inquire about the status of opening and your application.

13 ZT/Sem-II/ 16’
* Letters should be typed (10-12 point font), and no longer than one page. Avoid
graphics.
* Double check spelling and grammar.
* Letter paper should match your resume.
* Keep a copy of each letter you send.

Legal Cover Letter Tips

 According to a recent study, 50% of hiring managers at Fortune 500

companies utilize cover letters as writing samples--devote as much time to
your cover letters as you do to your resume.
 Use care in sentence structure, spelling and punctuation: make sure there
are no mistakes.
 Use a standard business letter style; make sure you sign your name.

15 ZT/Sem-II/ 16’
 Tailor each cover letter to each position and/or company.
 Keep copies of your letters for your records.
 Keep it short (no more than one page); you need not cover the same
ground as your resume. Your letter is an introductory summary of what
you have to offer.
 Do not call attention to lack of experience in certain duties. Instead,
emphasize valuable skills, transferable experience and company
knowledge.

Sample CV for LAW Students

Siddarth Ray

I have completed three years of Law studies in my LLB course and am eager to
learn all about the implications of Law in reaching out to people. All through my
studies I have taken an interest in people’s problems and have often, even
without doing extensive studies about the Law, been able to help my classmates,
my relatives and several friends. This has motivated me to study Law so that I
can be adequately equipped to serve others when eventually I qualify as a full-
fledged Lawyer.

Education and Training

-Completed my Secondary Education [CBSE] from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Cuttack,
in 1990, with First Division and ‘Civics and Politics’ as one of my subjects.
-Completed my Senior Secondary Certificate [CBSE] from Kendriya Vidyalaya,
Berhampur in 1992, with First Division and included Sociology and Political
Science as two of my options.
-Completed one year of Three-year Degree Course(Arts) with Political
Science(Hons.) under Utkal University, in 1993.
-Took part in Debates and Public Speaking training during my school days, from
1988 to 1992.
-Was part of the School Team that won the All-Orissa Schools’ Debate contest, in
1991, and was the Lead Speaker for the Group.
-Attended a one-week training : Law Forums for Students, organized by Law
Foundation, Jawaharlal Nehru University, in 1992, in Delhi, and was the Chief
Spokesperson for my school.
-Took part in a Moot Court session organized by Allahabad University in 1990,
and was part of the School Team that formed the Jury, in one of the Test cases.

Experience and Achievement

-In my first year at KIIT University, 2002, I was fortunate to work for a firm of Law
Consultants to Corporate Organizations in Kolkata, ‘Corporate Law’. The
organization has one of its Training Centres in Bhubaneswar, and works on
several cases with a wide range of clients. I was able to ‘sit in’ on at least 3 cases
during my two-month internship. I was able to experience how Legal jargon is

16 ZT/Sem-II/ 16’
used in the defence of cases, and was also able to understand how the Law can
be accessed even during a hearing. I was then able to assist one of the Lawyers
during the third case with notes and references.
-In my second year at KIIT University, 2003, my placement was in Rourkela, with
a company that dealt with the cases arising out of the Labour disputes in the
mines, ‘Employment Law’. Here the involvement was more Social and Political,
where the Law had to take a more holistic approach. This experience too was
quite enriching for me, and in the second month that I was there I was able to
take part in one of the Committee sessions, where ‘legal’ support can often be
crucial.
-In my third year at KIIT University, 2004, the Law firm I got placed in dealt with
Government issues; ‘State Law’ at Berhampur. The Government uses its own
style of operations and always seems to have the leverage to exact justice. I was
able to see how the Law can extract compensations for apparently lost causes.
During this last experience I had the opportunity to interact with clients in a more
direct way, and also get to visit some of the companies/clients to examine
documents and to experience the settings.

could be mentioned here).

In my placements and internships I have gathered valuable experience and feel I

am now ready to take on actual work. I am eager to learn as I work, and will be
happy to undergo whatever training and updating your company expects of its
employees.

I am capable of working on my own at lengthy assignments, but am also a

committed team worker and believe in being loyal to my colleagues and to my
organization.

I am attaching my CV that will give you details about my Education and

Experience.

I am eagerly looking forward to meeting you and to working in your organization.

Yours sincerely

Mr Siddarth Ray.
