Extended Techniques

Extended techniques demonstration

EXERCISE: Write a short piece that uses at least three extended techniques

Option 1: write traditionally and then use the techniques to colour the texture

Option 2: use the techniques as a starting point

Option 3: do both of the above

We will workshop the pieces with Plexus

string techniques
means of articulation
part of bow: point (alla punta) middle (normale) heel/frog (al tallone)

bowed bow direction: downbow upbow vertical bowing underbowing [Vc, DB]
(arco) bow pressure: light (flautando) medium (normale) heavy overpressure (crushed)
stroke type:
off the string; struck (arco battuto)
wood of the bow bowed (c.l.t. = tremolo on the string saltando (jumping);
(col legno) col legno tratto) balzando (bouncing) struck (c.l.b. =
col legno battuto)
articulator: fingertip (default) fingernail plectrum (e.g. guitar pick) palm [DB] (slap pizz.)
plucked
(pizz.) special snap pizz. arpeggiated / strummed tremolo left hand
techniques: (Bartók pizz.) strummed chords (quasi chitarra) (L.H. pizz. / +)
percussive effects part of hand: fingertip(s) knuckles palm object (e.g. chopstick)

playing positions
beyond the L.H. fingers on the fingerboard
above the fingerboard = sul tasto / s.t. on the wood of the bridge (side)
ON between fingerboard and bridge (normal) = ordinario / ord. ON on the belly
STRI near the bridge = sul ponticello / sul pont. / s.p BOD on the back
NGS on the bridge = alto sul pont. / a.s.p. Y on the tailpiece
behind the bridge = dietro il pont.
